~ Ether's Witness Concerning Coriantumr ~
76. He Should Only Live to See the Fulfilling of the Prophecies
" ... he [Coriantumr] should only live to see the fulfilling
of the prophecies which had been spoken concerning another people receiving
the land for their inheritance; and Coriantumr should receive a burial by
them ... " ~ Ether 13:21
Now concerning the relationship of Coriantumr, the sole survivor of the
Jaredite self anialation excepting Ether, that last Jaredite Coriantumr does
as prophesied coming in contact with another people receiving the land for
their inheritance before his death. And there are four converging actualities
to consider. FIRST, there is the nature of the prophecies of
Ether concerning the Jaredites and Coriantumr, SECOND, there
are the related prophecies of Ether as related by Moroni as to just who this
land was reserved for and why, THIRD there is the applicable
prophecies concerning the people of Lehi as a remnant of Joseph in the Book
of Mormon relating to the passage of the promised land from one people unto
another people including the words of Christ, and FOURTH, there
is the relatively remote and side note natures of the Mulekites in
relationship to these circumstance on the one hand and then on the other hand
their direct and immediate participation in the whole of it.
In somewhat of a chronological order and order of appearance, let us begin
with the circumstance of the Jaredites and the prophecies of Ether concerning
the transfer of the land of promise to another people and Coriantumr's
prophesied personal experience related to this other people who were to
inherit the land.
1. The Jaredite Demise and Ether's Prophecy Concerning Coriantumr
Now, 'the days of Ether were in the days of Coriantumr', Ether being the
last prophet of record among the Jaredites and Coriantumr commencing as the
'king over all the land' of the Jaredites (Ether 12:1). Ether, being God's
prophet, went forth and did prophesy unto the people and Coriantumr, warning
them of the pending fates if they would not repent and believe in God. But
the Jaredites rejected Ether and did cast him out from their midst and Ether
took up his residence 'in the cavity of a rock' - 'and by night he went
forth veiwing the things which should come upon the people' (Ether 13:13). In
fact Ether in effect did make 'the remainder of this record (Ether's 24 plate
record of the Jaredites) as he dwelt in that cavity of a rock, viewing
the destructions which came upon the people, by night' (Ether 13:14). What is
the matter of truth? Is it more truth and acceptable to be a firsthand
witness of an event in the daylight in the very place and circumstance of
its happening, veiwing the actual events in that manner? Or is it just as
acceptable if not more so to see them in vision from God at night in there
entirety not wandering after the marches and events from day to day as they
occurred across the vast reaches of the nation, but rather viewing them by
the spirit of revelation from God in vision while one but remained living
in the cavity of a rock? When Lehi did see the destruction of Jerusalem in
vision, did that make it less so or less of a reality? As to Ether's record's
reliablity, there is the large stone account given by Coriantumr himself
(Omni 1:20-22).
In the first year of Ether dwelling in his rock cavity civil war commenced
against Coriantumr by those pacticed in the dark secret arts of wickedness
and many people were slain. And it was in the second year that the Lord
came to Ether and commanded him to prophesy unto Coriantumr, 'that, if he would
repent, and all his household, the Lord would give unto him his kingdom
and spare the people. Otherwise they all would be destoryed and he only should
live to see the prophicies of destruction fulfilled and those prophecies
concerning another people receiving the land for their inheritance; and that
Coriantumr should receive a burial by them' (Ether 13:20-21). But they did
not repent but sought Ether's life and Ether again flee and hide himself
in his cavity of the rock (Ether 13:21).
Coriantumr did continue to fight for and defend his kingdom against a number
of foes, one after another. And during Coriantumrs ending years of waring
against the last named Shiz, the word of the Lord came again unto the
Ether that Coriantumr should not fall by the sword (Ether 14:21). Yet in that
last visionary episode seen by Ether in his night visions of the Jaredite
destruction, Ether reports that the two last survivors were Shiz and
Coriantumr and that after Coriantumr did behead Shiz with his sword,
Coriantumr himself 'fell to the earth, and became as if he had no life'
(Ether 15:30-32).
Now certainly Coriantumr was not dead. Under commandment of God Ether had
prophesied unto Coriantumr that he would live to see another people brought
by the hand of the Lord to inherit this great land of the Lord, His land of
promise, a land choice above all other lands reserved unto those who do
serve Christ and who do effect his purposes upon the land. Ether had also
stated to Coriantumr that he would receive his burial of them. This prophecy
does in fact come to perition as recorded in the book of Onmi wherein it
states:
"And it came to pass in the days of Mosiah, there was a large
stone brought unto him with engravings on it; and he did interpret the ]
engravings by the gift and power of God. And they gave an account of one
Coriantumr, and the slain of his people. And Coriantumer was discovered by
the people of Zarahamla (the Mulekites); and he dwelt with them for the space
of nine moons. It also spake a few words concerning his (Coriantumr's)
fahters. And his first parents came out from the tower, at the time the
Lord confounded the language of the people; and the severity of the Lord fell
upon them (the Jaredites) according to his judgments, which are just; and
their bones lay scattered in the land northward." Omni 1:20-22
This stone record could have only been obtained from Coriantumr during
those nine lunar months, being engraved in his language, not readable to
other than Mosiah by the power of God. And it is a presumption that upon the
conclusion of those nine lunar months of Coriantumr's association with the
Mulekites that Coriantumr died and was buried by them. And thus the prophecy
concerning Coriantumr was fulfilled even as Ether had spoken it as commanded
by God. Coriantumr had seen the other people who had been brought by the
hand of the Lord that were to inherit this promised land in the stead of
the Jaredites according to those prophecies of such as were recorded. As it
so stated, "he should live to see the fulfilling of the prophecies which
had been spoken concerning another people receiving the land for their
inheritance'. Now what were those 'prophecies recorded concerning another
people to receive the land for their inheritance'? And thus our second
consideration concerning this matter is afoot.
The Jaredite Prophecies Concerning This Other People
Concerning the Jaredite prophecies concerning this other People who would
inherit this land, it must also be considered as to the purpose of this land
in the Lord that would so necessitate the purpose and need for such an
inheritance on the part of this other people. Ether records as early as the
Lord speaking unto the brother of Jared, that it was the Lord's intent to
bring the Jaredites to this land of promise, a land choice above all other
lands which the Lord God preseved for a righteous people. And that whoso ever
should possess this land should serve the God of this land, the only God even
Jesus Christ. And that when and if any such people brought to this land would
ripen in iniquity, that the fulness of his wrath would come upon them and
they would be swept off and destoryed (Ether 2:7-12).
Moroni further reveals in his abridment of Ether's record, that Ether had
been given the vision of all, from the beginning of man to the end and that
after the flood waters had receded from off the face of this land it became
a choice land above all other lands, a chosen land of the Lord, and that all
men who lived here shold serve him (Ether 13:2). Further Moroni records that
Ether had seen concerning a New Jerusalem which was to be built upon this
land and that it should be built upon this land unto the remnant of the
seed of Joseph, and that Joseph providing a temporal salvation unto the
house of Israel in Egypt was a type of the Lord's mercies in providing for
the seed of Joseph salvation in the Lord in this land of promise, this land
of Joseph, that the remnant of the house of Joseph shall be built upon this
land; it shall be a land of their inheritance; and they shall build up a holy
city unto the Lord, like unto the Jerusalem of old (perhaps Melchizedek's
Jerusalem), and that they shall no more be confounted, until the end come
when the earth shall pass away. And that all that would dwell herein, whose
garments are white through the blood of the Lamb; are they who are numbered
amoung the remnant of the seed of Joseph' (Ether 13:2-12). That is these are
they who are Joseph and his companions of the latter days upon the face of
this land.
Now as Coriantumr did come to dwell with the Mulekites for nine moons and was
presumably buried by them, we are left to conclude that they were they of
whom these Jaredite prophecies did speak as another people brought to
inherit this land. We will speak upon this matter more later in this section.
But in fairness of equal time we must also consider all the other related
prophecies of the Book of Mormon so related to Lehi and his people as that
remnant of Joseph so brought to this land and what the Lord himself also so
stated unto them, whom from the Book of Mormon we know to be a remnant of the
seed of Joseph, also.
Promises and Prophecies Unto Lehi's Remnant of the House of
Joseph Upon This Land
From the beginning of the Nephite Book of Mormon record Nephi, the son of
Lehi was told by the Lord that if he would keep the Lord's commandments, that
they would be led to a land of promise, a land which the Lord had prepared
for them, a land which was choice above all other lands (1 Nephi 2:20).
The land of promise is mentioned frequently in Nephi's writings an many thinks
does he speak concerning its future including that in the latter days the
'Gentiles' would come upon the land of promise and that it would become a
land for their inheritance (1 Nephi 13:15). And that as many of the Gentiles
who would not harden their haearts against the Lamb of God would be numbered
amoung the seed of Lehi and the remnant of Joseph, even the house of Israel
to be a part of this land of Joseph's inheritance (1 Nephi 14:2). Even Lehi,
in speaking his blessing unto his children stated that he had obtained this
land of promise, a land which the Lord God had covenanted unto him and his
children forever as well as all those who should be so led out of other
countries unto it by the hand of the Lord (2 Nephi 1:5). And many and great
are the blessing and promises unto the seed of Joseph, that remnant of Joseph
who are represented by Lehi's and Ishmael's families of the Book of Mormon,
who do represent the descendants of both Manasseh and Ephraim, the two sons
of the promise of the covenant unto Joseph of Egypt. It even states that
that which was upon this land so encumbering it was swept off in order that
those of Lehi's party might inherit it.
Now even though the Lord himself does address the whole of the Book of Mormon
people at the time of his visitaion unto them as being they who are a
remnant of the house of Joseph (3 Nephi 15:12), and that the New Jerusalem,
of which Ether had seen the seed of Joseph build, was upon this land and
that he the Lord would be in their midst (3 Nephi 20:22; 3 Nephi 21:23-24).
And that the Allegory of the Olive Tree of Jacob 5 does establish clearly the
matter of the division of the Lamanites and Nephites upon this land, and the
Lord's deallings with Israel upon this land; that rather than to Lehi's
descendants as the remanant of Joseph as heirs of inheritance of this land
unto who Coriantumr does come to view, it is the Mulekites of the house of
David so associated with Mulek the son of Zedekiah. And why? Why is it the
Mulekites to whom Coriantumr is brought to view that other people who was to
inherit this promised land in the stead of the Jaredites.
Why the Mulekites?
So why did the Lord bring Coriantumr to the Mulekites in fulfillment of the
prophecy given him by Ether that before he died he would see that people
whom the Lord had brought to this land to inherit it? This was and is the
promised land of Joseph. It is unto Joseph's seed that it is given to be
inherited. Nephi, Lehi and Ishmael where that promised seed of Joseph
brought by the hand of the Lord to inherit this land. The Book of Mormon
predominantly presents them as such, the 'Nephites' to whom this land is
given, the seed of Lehi to whom this land is given. The Mulekites are but a
side note and a query as to why those of the house of David would also be so
brought unto this land of Joseph, the land of Joseph's inheritance promised
to the seed of Joseph upon which that seed of Joseph would build up unto the
Lord a New Jerusalem. Why?
And yet it is to the Mulekites that Coriantumr is brought to see those whom
the Lord has brought to inherit the land of Joseph. And this even though the
Jaredite prophecies state that it is unto the seed of Joseph that it is to be
given in order that in the last days they are to built up a New Jerusalem
unto the Lord. Certainly this includes Joseph and his companions in this
work. But just how is the House of David to be deemed as being of Joseph and
his companions. Is not the House of David a part of Judah and his companions?
Or it there something more here, that Lehi, Ishmael and Mulek are all so
brought to the land of Joseph and only those of Mulek are viewed by
Coriantumr. Certainly if Mulek and the House of David were legally and
rightfully of the seed and remnant of Joseph this whole matter would be
easily resolved. And so it is to be considered as does this text present.
And so it may be so considered that Coriantumr the King of the Jaredites was
brought to view the remnants of the Royal House of Israel, even that rightful
Royal House of Joseph in that Obed was legally and rightfully the son
of those Ephraimites of Bethlehem, Mahlon and Elimelech. So the prophecy of
Ether is completely compatible and fulfilled in that Coriantumr did see
those of Joseph who did come to inherit the land of Joseph in the stead of
the Jaredites to the fulfilling of the house of Joseph being that which upon
this land will inherit it and so build the New Jerusalem upon it. That is,
the Mulekites were of Joseph just as much as the seed of Lehi and Ishmael were
to be so deemed and considered. And perhaps this is what the Lord had in mind
to so point out by having Coriantumr come to the Mulekites rather than those
of the seed of Lehi or Ishmael.
In Conclusion
The prophecies which had been just spoken of by Moroni in reciting those of
Ether who had written the vision of all of Mahonri Moriancumr was that, " ...
the remnant of the house of Joseph shall be built upon this land [America];
and it shall be a land of their inheritance (that is of Joseph and his
companions); and they shall build up a holy
city unto the Lord, like unto Jerusalem of old ... ' (Ether 13:8). Now it
has come to be known that these Americas are the land of Joseph so promised
to the remnant of the seed of Joseph. And that they would be instrumental
in building of the New Jerusalem in the latter days (Ether 13:3). This is
solid Mormon Doctrine as set forth in the Book of Mormon and according to
our latter day General Authorities, Apostles and Prophets.
So what is of a curiousity here is that the last surviving Jaredite warior,
Coriantumr is promised by the prophet Ether that he should see the coming
of these people who would fulfill these prophecies of the remnant of Joseph
upon the land of Joseph. But Coriantumr never does see the families of Lehi
who are of the tribe of Manasseh the eldest son of Joseph of Egypt, nor does
he ever see the families of Ishmael who are of the tribe of Ephraim, the
second son of Joseph of Egypt, which Ephraim is the 'Firstborn of Israel' and
the son of the covenant by whom the promises of the fathers did remain (D&C
27:10). The only people Coriantumr came to see was the Mulekites. Mulek was
the son of King Zedekiah of the House of David, the royalty line of the House
of Israel. Now has is Coriantumr seeing Mulek's people the fulfilling of the
prophecies spoken of concerning the people who would come to inherit the land
of Joseph as the remnant of the tribe of Joseph?
This prophecy of Ether to Coriantumr could only have its fulfillment if
Mulek was the legal and rightful seed of the covenant of Joseph and Joseph's
son Ephraim. And herein is additional evidence that the House of David is
that rightful and legal house of Mahlon and Elimelech who were Ephrathites of
the covenant of Ephraim as were Nun and Joshua before them.
