BARKER FAMILY OF VIRGINIA

John Barker patented 600 acres on Chippokee Creek on 5 October 1657 [on the above map, Upper Chipokee Creek or Chippokee Creek is that 'creek' which enters the James River just above the name 'SURRY']. His wife's name was Grace Cotton, though some thought Grace to have been the daughter of Thomas Busby and granddaughter of Francis Grey and Grace Grey. This Thomas Busby was probably the Busby known as "Bacon's Lieutenant" with whom this John Barker and others in Bacon's Rebellion took over the home of Arthur Allen, later called "Bacon's Castle" and who on 15 November, 1677, agreed to pay Allen for damage done to his home. Thomas Cotton's will was found and shows Grace Barker to be the daughter of the said Thomas Cotton . John Barker's will was probated in Surry County on 19 May 1714. (Deeds-Wills 1709-1715, p. 191-2). John Barker's will names Elizabeth Andrews, daughter who married first to Christopher Foster and second to Thomas Andrews; Sarah Lanier, daughter, wife of Robert Lanier; Hannah Lashley, daughter, wife of Walter Lashley; Robert Foster, grandson; John Barker, son - 400 acres; John Barker, grandson; Josiah Barker, son - 400 acres; Grace Barker, wife - 300 acres for her lifetime and then to daughter Grace Barker; Grace Barker, daughter. John's will mentions a Richard Barker, but without identification but his wife Grace Barker in her will probated 18 August 1725 names son Richard (DW 9, 211). Josiah Barker is instructed to take possession of the estates of Christopher, Grace and Robert Foster until they come of age. SOURCE:W. E. Pullen in The Barkers of Virginia

"Abraham" of London Virginia -1st Generation - Note that all these people come from around Surry County Virginia In 1633 John Barker was Master of the Ship Marmaduke. In 1635 John Barker Master Captain of the ship “Abraham” of London sailed to the New World. In a few months they would land in Virginia. At the time living conditions were harsh and unrelenting. Disease and hardship awaited those that dared to carve out a new life, a new beginning. "Abraham" of London Passenger List Near Jamestown, Virginia is where the Barker Family first settled. John Barker the Master Captain of the ship “Abraham” of London departed London in 1635 and settled on Chippokee Creek in James City County, Virginia first. Then in Southwark Parish, Surry County, apparently about 1642 where he lived until 1678 when he moved to Martin's Brandon in Charles City County, where he died in 1689. In April 14, 1638 John Barker of Virginia received a retail license lp No. 224 to sell tobacco in the following cities Southhockington and Upminster and East Horndon, Essex. He paid 4 pounds 10 shillings. He Married Letitia Drew in England sometime before 1650. They had three children that are documented. Letitia died before 1671. After the death of his wife John married Ann Marshall in 1672 / 1673. John Barker was an English sea captain. He settled on Chippokee Creek in James City County, Virginia, later in Southwark Parish, Surry County, apparently about 1649, where he lived until 1678 when he moved to Martin's Brandon in Charles City County, where he died in 1689. His first wife, thought to have been named Letitia Drew, was the mother of his three sons - John, Jr., Joel and Jethro, all apparently born in England, and lived in Surry County, Virginia. John Barker, "Master of the good ship Abraham set sail from London with 51 passengers aboard", 20 November 1635. John Barker patented 300 acres "on the very head of the main branch of Lower Chippokee Creek", 29 November, 1649, for transporting six settlers to Virginia. Due to the destruction of the early James City records, nothing more is known of John until the creation of Surry County, on the south side of the James River, from and across from James City, 1652. John later patented 1800 acres on Chippokee, 18 December 1662, whereon he had his home until 10 August 1678, when he sold this land to Benjamin Harrison for 16,000 pounds of tobacco and moved to Martin's Brandon, Charles City County. John married his second wife, Ann, widow of George Marshall of Martin's Brandon between 9 March 1672, when Marshall's will was probated and 2 September 1673 when John Barker Sr. and wife Ann, deeded 75 ares on Chippokee Creek to John Barker the Younger. The deed states Ann was Marshall's widow, whom John had married and the two were residents of Southwark Parish and that the land had been bequeathed to Ann by Marshall. On 3 March 1674, John Barker Junior re conveyed the 75 acres to John Barker Sr. and referred to Mrs Ann Barker, Mother in law to me (step-mother). John Barker died in Martin's Brandon leaving a will in Charles City County which was destroyed with all others of the time. This is shown by an order of the Charles City Court of 5 January 1690 which order recorded that John Good had married Ann Marshall Barker and Good was ordered to pay Joel Barker, son of John Barker, 8000 pounds of tobacco bequeathed to Joel by his father. The order also directed that upon payment to Joel and Jethro, sons of John were to sign a sufficient discharge to Good. Chart Surry County Virginia

Now John W. Swanner was the eldest son of [S]Cinderilla/Atherilla Jones and Thomas L Swanner. As to the exact circumstance that this transaction was made it is not known, whether John W. Swanner being a 'male' acting for his 'female' mother or just what is beside the matter at hand. What is proved here in absolute terms is that Atherilla Swanner, daughter stated in John Jones' will is indeed also known by the name of [S]Cinderilla, to whom John Jones bequeathed said Mourning to her as of his will dated January 1837. And since that date in 1837, by the time of the transaction of April 1859, Mourning had had such 6 children born of her to be included in this later transaction under the hand of John W. Swanner, son of [S]Cinderilla/Atherilla Swanner [Jones] and Thomas L. Swanner.
