B A R R I B A L L of N O R T H H I L LBARRIBALL: BArriball is an unusual name of an ancient origin. Its meaning would suggest that it is from a set location and that locational setting would appear to be from southwest England origins. The 'French' word combination, likely from the Norman days, basically mean 'Castle on the hillock'. It reminds one of such defensive castle locations, perhaps also along a high seaside position. There are many name variations, but most are phoneticly based such as Barrable, Baribal, Barrabeale etectera. The precise location is now 'lost' to where it may have actually been in medieval times and takes it place with some 5,000 other such British surnames also known to originate from 'lost places'.In Cornwall county the surname of Barriball is found in a number of locations. My own family connection comes with the marriage of William Luskey and Mary Barriball at North Hill parish on 29th of November 1720. As there are also Barriball family members located of this age at neighboring Altarnun, there is a distinct possibility that the families are related. ~ Launceston Castle |
