BARTLA, BARTLYE, BARTLY OR BARTLEY - The name is variously spelt depending upon the exposure and
background of the recording clerk who is keeping the records. Thus it must be looked for under a variety
of spellings even for and within the same family and family memebers. And we haven't even began to look
at Bartlet or Bartlett. Now Mary Bartley, the wife of Zacharias Collett, father's name is Hannibal
Bartley. With a name like that he ought to be easy to track down and keep track. That is if you allow
for the various spelling of his name, both his first name and last name. As for their geographic travels,
the family begins in East Newlyn, moves to St Columb Minor, then to Gorran and finally to Philleigh
where they run into the Collett family of Philleigh. Their longest stent of stay was in St Columb Minor.
And though Hannibal Bartley, my fifth great grandfather was buried at Philleigh parish, he was living at
and his last Will & Testament was written as him being
of Ruanlanyhorne which is next to Philleigh to its north on the east as seen also in the map.
Our own Bartley family vacates the regions of St Columb Minor in a seemingly large jump to
Gorran and then west via Ruan Lanihorne to Philliegh and but for the name of Hannibal they
might have become lost. Another of our cousin branches seem to take a more gradual path through
such as Newlyn East, St Erme and thence on south to Philleigh as well as will be seen upon one
of our cousin pages.
And then there is the other side of the coin in that some like to make of the name a French
related spelling as BARTLET or BARTLETT, which for generations it will be seen that it is not,
as it is held in the local parish records almost exclusively as BARTLEY.
Our BARTLEY Ancestors
Now the name of Bartley or Bartley, sometimes written by some as Bartlet or even Bartlett after
the French rendition of the phonetics of the name, is wide spread with some known seemingly
originating centers. One such center is about St. Columb Minor, where for a number of generations
the Bartley family and name did prevail until such sicknesses and poor conditions did dictate
that such as would survive would need to remove themselves from thence and into other parts of
the county. It is there that the family can look to such as Alexander Bartley, commonly called
Sandry, did stand as a patriarch to the family that would from him descend. It is fortunate that
we are able through the relatively unique name of Hanniball have some aid in following our
descent. For without such we could get caught up in the 'ease' of follow a course of seemingly
parish fits in the place of what really is. We will begin with the family of our 4th great
grandmother, Mary Bartley, the daughter of our 5th great grandparents Hannibal Bartley and
Mary Henna.
5th Great Grandparents
Hannibal Bartley & Mary Henna (first wife)
and
Hannibal Bartley and Elizabeth Handcock (second wife)
Now DON'T confuse this with the next generation and the TWO Thomas Bartley families with the
two singular wifes of Elizabeth Benny to the one and Mary Benney to the other. Hannibal Bartley
did have two separate wives and it is quite clear who the children of the one wife are and who
are the children of the other wife.

* It looks as though Hannibal returns to the family church graveyard of St Columb Minor to
bury his first wife after her early death. After his marriage to his second wife and their
many children together, they are both buried together at Philleigh, the family's then
established home. It certainly would be strange to find Mary buried there at Philliegh when
the early family had not even arrived there at the point of her death.

Thomas Bartley and Mary Benney Family
6th Great Grandparents
The mixing of the families of two separate people by the name of 'Thomas Bartley' is still yet
to be unscrambled in the LDS records of 'Family Search'. The mistake comes early in attempting
to allocate all who record 'Thomas Bartley' as father but to one 'Thomas Bartley', which a more
through and detailed search reveals that there is at least two. The Thomas Barley who marries
Elizabeth Benny in 1696 have a son named William, likely after that Thomas Bartley's father,
William Bartley as depected next. That particular William Bartley can be seen on one of our
Bartley cousin pages as being a cousin to the other Thomas Bartley, but he is not the same.
His wife Elizabeth Benny does appear to live until 1732, thus he IS NOT free to marry again in
1698 to another. Thus IT IS a differnt Thomas Bartley, our Thomas Bartley who does marry Mary
Benney in 1698. And thank goodness that we can further follow the distinction because of the
name of Hannibal, that is this OTHER Thomas Bartley, OUR Thomas Bartley does name one of his
sons by the name of Hannabal Bartley after his father Hannibal Bartley. A careful study of
the parish records aids in that the last two children they record as this Thomas Bartley and
HIS WIFE Mary Benney states that these are the children of Thomas and Mary. It would be nice
if the parish records would always give both parents names, but we are thankful what at least
this to be found in them which helps us keep our line straight.

* There is another marriage for Thomas Bartley, 7 October 1696 at St Comumb Minor to an
Elizabeth Benny. There is also another Thomas Bartley, baptism 9 April 1667 at St Columb
Minor, son of William Bartley. This leaves some possibilities open to consideration.
