BARTLEY COUSINS TWO |
Thomas Robarts and Prudence Bartley Family of CousinsThe only children placed with this couple are those who state parentage as being of Thomas and Prudance (variously spelt). Other children at other locations cannot be for sure placed in this family with just the father being named as 'Thomas'. Though there is some question as to applicable burial dates, they are what can be found currently whether they be or not, they are what is. The name of Amy Roberts in St Erme is reasonably nearby even though the age gap would have to suggest a distant family 'caboose'. John and Charles fit well time wise with a possible phonetic spelling difference. As stated before, they all have Thomas and Prudence listed as their parents. An added note: Ancestry.com, which posts word of mouth type information without a lot of source evidence, lists Prudence Bartley as marrying 'Thomas Roberts' so that was not from the parish marriage record. The suggest 8 children to this family (all 'Roberts') of which are the five which I have plus three more, Thomas Roberts, Margery Roberts and a Prudence Roberts. Only two of those eight have any associated dates, William Roberts (1731-?) and Amey Roberts (1740-1816). They do have the father Thomas Roberts born in St Newlyn (1698-1783). And of course Predence Bartley as (1702-?) but they say she was also born in St Newlyn rather than St Columb Minor where her parish baptism is recorded. They don't have Prudence's or Thomas's parents. Perhaps with this 'reliable?' word of mouth and the actual source records, someone can proceed to do further research on this family and they may even find out that Purdence's father is Thomas Bartley. Ancestry.com is worth a look and can give some leads. I have yet to find it 100% accurate and fully solid in the source document department and with my own Hender ancestry they continue to post numerous errors. (see:@http://records.ancestry.com/prudence_bartley_records.ashx?pid=1970833) There is a Thomas Robarts' baptism record in St Columb Minor of 21 April 1701, father Anthony Robarts. I find no Thomas 'Roberts' baptism record which would relate to a 1698 birth. Amey ROBARTS did marry George JOHNS on 24 Jun 1768 at St Erme. William Robarts, her brother? was a witness, but no other confirming evidence as to parentage is on the marriage record. Ancestry.com lists one child - Amey Johns and they date range her (1783-unknown)—her actual baptism record dates her baptism 24 May 1774 at St. Erme as Amey JOHNS Father: George and Mother: Amey. (see @http://records.ancestry.com/amey_roberts_records.ashx?pid=45657478) The St Erme parish also lists a sisters Prudence Johns (1769), Jinnifer Johns (1770), and Mary Johns (1772). In Philleigh further siblings for George and Amey Johns are listed with their baptisms given - George (1776), William (1777), Robert (1779), Robert (1781), Mary (1782), Thomas (1784), Anne (1787) and Joey (1789) by which time poor mother Amey/Amy [Robarts] Johns would be age 44 (1789-1744=454) and with birthing 12 children. He was NOT born in Crantock, Cornwall on 1738 to George Johns and Mary Davy. The fact is that his burial record states his age at death to be 95 (1828-92=1832/3). There are two possible baptisms which could fit this birth: cb 25 May 1732 at Helston, parents (Mr) George JOHNS and (Mrs) Bridget JOHNS. They were married at Helston 25 Jul 1717, George JOHNS and Bridget TREMENHEER (banns). The other possible fit is cb 23 August 1732 at Madron George JOHNS son of Richard JOHNS. A note on this baptism states: At Penzance. While there are a number of marriage for Richard of this date range, perhaps the 'best' fit is at Crantock. Marriage date 17 Jan 1729 at Crantock between Richard JOHNS and Margaret MARTIN. Richard Johns is stated as being resident of St Agnes. As per the note on George Johns' burial record, which recorded his age at 95, it also stated that his residence was at Crantock. So I would suggest that his parentage is Richard Johns and Margaret Martin. That they may have been related to George Johns and Mary Davy of Crantock is quite possible as well. ** Ancestry.com reports that Amey Johns married John Hocking but gives not dates or place, neither is such found in the parish registers. 'Family Search' gives a marriage date of 30 January 1806 to a Richard Hocking at Cornelly, Cornwall, England. There is a burial record for an Amey Hocking buried 11 July 1790 at Redruth, but that would be a reach. There are a number of burials for an Amy Hocking at a number of locations but no good fit. Perhaps she is out of England? |
