THE BENTLEY FAMILY FROM ENGLAND VIA VIRGINIA TO NORTH CAROLINA
The Bentley family has a colorful
beginninge for which detail seems a bit lacking and judgments may be made.
But the times of very early Colonial life as they were and such matters as
they also were, such ought to be somewhat expected though not always so
spoken about. While not exactly the Wild Wild West, neither was it a time
of heighth of social society either. I'll first begin with the opening
family pedigree with some comment and also links to where some seemingly
well searched out fact are to be found concerngint the Bentley family we
seemly do have a descentantcy from.
Somewhat of a misnomer, Elizabeth City was not a 'city'. Rather it was
one of eight original 'shires' prescribed by King James in 1634, which one
he named for his daughter Elizabeth as also the Elizabeth River. It later
became a county of Virginia, which today is no longer.
