A Comparative Book of Mormon Chronology - Jaredite Time Insights
by Don R. Hender
(Part IV)
[About 2250 BC-590 BC —— Book of Ether]
Now there are three relative events which relate to the beginnings
of the people of Jared or the Jaredites. These events are the Flood of Noah,
the Dividing of the Land in the days of Peleg, and the building and such
events which surround the Tower of Babel. Now various Chronologies will place
these dates somewhat differenetly and they will be to a degree approximate at
best. Now all I can do is the best I can at setting these dates myself, which
I will, but first the relavence of the events one to the other ought to be
understood.
First the Flood of Noah. Though the Bible states it, there is some
debate whether the flood of Noah was world wide or a more locally bounded
event. It is one of the values of the record of the Jaredites that is does
confirm that the flood of Noah was world wide for the Jaredite record speaks
of the waters still receeding from off the earth in America even still at the
time of the Jaredites. One set of calculations places the dating of the Flood
of Noah at about 2342 BC. This considers the various years of the lives of
those since Adam and a beginning date of Adams life on earth at about 4000 BC.
For the waters to still be receeding from off the land, it should not be too
lengthy of a time since the Flood, though the events of the dividing of the
land in the days of Peleg may have also contributed some effects upon that.
Second the Days of Peleg. Now Peleg was born some 100 years after the
resting of the Ark back on land again, presumably upon some mountian height
of the 'mountains of Ararat'. And to keep the time difference to a minimum, one might
presume that Peleg's, whose name means 'divide' or 'division', 'days' came
early in his life when the land was divided, that is when the 'Americas',
the Islands of the Sea, and Austrailia were cut off from the one land. In the
Pacific one might presume a 'sinking of the sea' to have been one event. But
one must also consider such forces as the mid-Atlantic ridge whose volcanic
activity is still pushing the lands appart to day. And in fact there is an
entire 'ring of fire' which surrounds the Pacific with such volcanic activity
not to mention the volcanic activities crossing in the midsts of the Pacific
such as that which is still forming the Islands of Hawaii even today.
Now science will agree and tell you that the land was once one land. Just
how many times the cycle of coming together of the land and dividing again
is of some question. But science will certainly tell you that it has been
hundreds of thousands of years since the land was once one land. That is
according to the current dynamics of the contenental drifts of today. Yet
according to the Bible, in the 'Days of Peleg' could have been as little as
a hundred years since the flood of Noah and certainly of less duration ago
than what science will tell you. One estimation would yield a date of around
2240 BC.
The Time of the Tower of Babel. Again according to the ages of people
in the Bible and the fact that such as Nimrod was associated with the Tower of
Babel, the time of the dividing of the land in the days of Peleg may well have
happened during the same time and era as that in which the Tower of Babel was
being built. After the flood, the commandment of the Lord came for the people
to spread back out over the face of the land. Rather than doing exactly that,
the people began to congregate in central locations, such as the city of
Nimrod. Prophets of God would have warned the people to dispurse, but they
generally did not. In fact they began to build cities and of course the
Tower of Babel which had a impossible objective of reaching to heaven.
It was likely in conjunction with these warnings and even in conjunction with
such as the great earth shaking events of the land beginning to divide that
such as Jared called upon his brother, Mahonri Moriancumer, to call upon the
name of the Lord to please not confound their language, but rather tell them
and guide them where to go and they would dispurse upon the land as the Lord
had commanded. We don't have the exact prayers of pleading which Mahonri
Moriancumer spoke but one can imagine that of such was a matter of their
content. And the Lord agreed and covenanted with Mahori Moriancumer that he
would not confound their language, that is the families of Jared, Mahori and
their specific group of friends who likely adhered to the words and warning
of Mahori Moriancumer and Jared that if they would come with them to disperse,
there language would not be confounded.
And thus the beginning of the history of the Jaredites may also be placed at
the same time and era of the building of the Tower of Babel and of when the
land was divided in the days of Peleg. It just depends on how far back you
want to consider that the story of Jared and his brother begins in such
relationship to the days of the Tower of Babel and the dividing of the land.
Certainly the land was divided and still in relative motion commotion for
the nature of the barges the Lord had the Jaredites build and the roughness of
the seas envolved would so suggest that the parting of the lands, though
having been effectived, were still in some degree dynamically still coming to
a settling of their movements. About 2240 BC would do for that time as well.
Now other formers of a timeline for the Jaredites have speculated earlier,
that is as early as say 3100 BC, but then one would also have to push back
the beginning time of Adam as well. In that particular, all things are of such
a 'relative' nature. And the best that one can do with those earliest of times
is to approximate. The datings of the middle-America civilizations is one
such matter used by some. But that brings one back to the theories of science
and such things as the 'carbon dating' of things and the like in putting
such matters together. Myself, I prefer to stay more Biblical oriented as I
do suppose that such scientific datings and their theories are a bit off. In
the case of carbon dating I've even noted that there seems to be an 'exponential'
facter which the fomula they use has not taken into consideration, that is
under such and such circumstance the depletion of the carbon isotop they are
measure begins to decay exponentually faster than they have formulated it to
do so. Being covered by sea or salt water for example seems to have such and
effect rather than the 'scientific lab' environment of the fomulas used seem
to allow for, etc.
So with this background and beginning, I will preceed to further consider the
chronology and timeline of the Jaredites. In this case with the 'Jaredite
Chronology' or timeline, I will again uses the parallel columns. This time
the first column for the approximate dates and times as well as the setting
in the corresponding geneology from father to son which must fit within the
over all time frame. I will not give as 'detailed' a timeline as some, rather
I will in the second column comment upon those significant events of
Jaredite history and how such might fit with other scriptural history as
well.
