B U N T   F A M I L Y   o f   C O R N W A L L

BUNT - The name and likely also the family goes back to the 'Old-English', which is of course much like the German language it comes from - Anglo-Saxon. Therefore it being 'low-German' it ought not be too strange to see equivalents of the name in both England and various German language lands, even Holland where some suppose it to be from. But for dating, the name seems to appear in England first and not necessarily by later immigration than the Anglo-Saxon. Throughout England there are many variations but in Cornwall it seems to have been Bunt from the mid 1500s and perhaps a 'Cornish' corruption of an English/Anglo name rather than an English corruption of a Cornish/Welsh - Celtic name for a change. (Variations: 'Le Bent', Bend, Bende, 'Le Bendare' and so on. One possible meaning is one who lives or is from 'the bend in the river' and it goes along with when surnames began many were 'location' derived such as the Welsh "Hendower" - Old-Tower into Hender.

It is reported that Richard was a rope maker. He was Christian baptized at Lanreath, married in Stoke Damerel, Devon, (like some of our Henders), and he died and was buried in Liskeard. Whether his travels means that some of his children are missed or just attributed to his small family may be yet to be understood. His son was born in Stoke Damerel and his two known daughters were born in Liskeard. This is what their family looks like:

The Moon family tie in is to a second line of the Moon Families of Liskeard, where
there seems to be three or four lines of Moon family established in that county of
Liskeard.

The parents of Richard Bunt, the father of Agnes Bunt who married John Moon, are Thomas Bunt and his second wife Martha Avery. Thomas Bunt has eight children by his first wife Jane Wilcock before she died and then Thomas remarried Martha Avery as his second wife and had five more children by her. I will present first his second family by Martha Avery as that is who we descend from and then I'll also present his family with his first wife.

* Martha Avery may actually be Martha Every whose father in Antony Every of 
St Pinnock. If that is so she was christen/baptism 10 March 1696 per LDs Family
Search and OPC database under that name and place. Otherwise there seems to not
be a record for a Martha Avery who would fit.
