CHAPMAN / CHIPMAN
FAMILY of
DULOE & LISKEARD

CHAPMAN/CHIPMAN: There is Chapman which seems to be the name form prefered mostly in the east of Cornwall fron Lanlivery thus. It is in Lanlivery where my western Chipman family has been traced to and there it is George Chapman and his son William. When William moves west he become William Chipman in the records, though still the same person. And of course there is also the variation of Chepman which creeps in about. Ceap-man is suggested as the 'Olde English' compound discriptive name from which the 'English' name is thought to have come. 'Ceap' means to barter, that is trade or bargain and 'mann', well, is just that, 'man'. So we have a 'trades-man'. Of course any such ancient origin of a name usually has little or nothing at all to do with what the person is or may become. For those who want to look to an upper crust to the name, there is Alice Chepman of Derbyshire, Berchtoldus Kofman of Germany, and Henry le Chupman of Hampshire. Well that is what is known or thought. Perhaps there is still some other 'real' source of the man to come forward? For another take on the name of interest look here.

As for the connection to our lines, Jane Chapman and Edward Bowden/Bawden where married at Sheviock, 21 January 1705, and are the parents of Joane/Joan Bowden who married Cornelius Moon of our 'first' moon family, the line from which Susanna Moon descends who married Philip Trout. So it is thus that we begin from there:
There are two families of record in Cornwall whose daughter could fit, neither very well. And as we are back to the age of the 1600s, there is always the likelihood that there is presently no parish record available to set her proper baptism and parentage. So the following pedigree is but a suggestive possiblily, though my confidence leve in either one of them is low.

Richard Chapman = Bridget Richard Chapman = Jane

                                            |
                                            o Joane Bowden
                                            | = Cornelius Moon
                                            o Susanna Bowden
                                              = Richard Burns

Though the marriage record places Jane Chapman residence at Duloe, there are actualy only two such Jane/Joane baptism records at hand which do fit and neither are in Duloe. One which age fits better is actually a Johana of Bridgerule where she would be but 26 at marriage. The other one which stays the course of her name being Jane but she would be at the age of 35 at marriage. Since Edward and Jane named their first child Joane, then the consideration of Jane being Johana is not any stretch to consider.
