CHUB/CHUBB: One considered source of the name is from the 'chubbe' fish. It is also associated with 'chubbiness' as that is what the fish was known for, its appetite and fat shape. In that sense the surname would have been so assigned to a 'fat' family. Another consideration is that it is from a name corruption such as from Chubbis. It has a number of spelling variations of which in Cornwall the two here are most common.
The parish of Trewen is that of a Hamlet and its church is not the 'grand' parish church of the larger parishes. Trewen itself is only 5 miles west of Launceston. And the Chub/b family marriages seem to have a preference for St Mary Magdalene there. ~ St Michaels, Trewen Hamlet Parish Church

* Seen to have happened more than once, is that the recorder for a various number of presumed
reasons has confused the name of the immediate parent, in this case Walter, with a previous
family father, the grandfather. Here it is presumed that this John Chub is in fact one of
Walter Chub's sons which is recorded with the grandfather's name John rather than with the
immediate father's name Walter. It could come from a clerk's or bishop's past family knowledge
or from as simple a mistake as asking for the father's name and the immediate father considering
he is being asked for his father's name replies with his father's name, the grandfather's name
rather than his own name.
