However, some family members were baptized by Hyrum Smith and Newel Knight of the Colesville New York Branch and may have had an affiliation with that branch: Harris, Elmer (son of Nathan and Rhoda Lapham Harris and brother of Martin Harris). Martin had given his brother Elmer a copy of the Book of Mormon. Unamed shoemaker from Greene, Chenango County, is said to have joined the new church, however, like John Morse, he reportedly died before the exodus to Ohio. Wilkins, Nancy Coburn (wife of Preston T. Wilkins and sister of Sally and Emily Coburn, she showed an initial interest in the church. Her husband, Preston, forbade any continued association with the church.) Willis, Eleazer (father of Ira J. Willis, may have had an early affiliation. He is a member by the Nauvoo period.)
* There is some confussion here concerning this Aaron Slade Jr. as there were three Aaron Slade generations. Aaron Slade Sr. married Sarah [Hannah] Crouch, their son Aaron Slade Jr. (1773-1854) Married Marry [Molly] Knight, their son Aaron Slade would have been Aaron Slade (1807-__) the III if the Sr. and Jr. labels had been kept track of. In the family history it records that Aaron Slade II, the husband of Mary [Molly] Knight, did travel west towards "The Ohio" with the family as far as Buffalo, N.Y. when he left Molly with four of their nine children who continued west with Benjamin (1801-1891), Ann Slade Rogers (1803-1872), Clark Marion Slade (1805-1842), and George Washington Slade (1816-1911). Thence the rest of the family remained in New York including Aaron Slade II or Jr. (the husband who did not continue). It does not state that any of the other children had even come with them (Martin Slade 1799-unk., Alfred Slade 1801-1872, Aaron Slade III 1807-unk., William Slade 1809-unk., Newell Slade (1815-1852)). Each of those children, if still living in 1831, would have been old enough to make up their own minds as to whether stay in New York or even have had joined the church. Martin Slade has already married to Jane _____ in about 1823 and they had had three children before 1830, Abigail Slade (1825-?), Lyman Slade (1827-1909) who did in New York, and Sally Slade (1829-?). Alfred Slade had also married Eliza Ann Rogers and had children at least one of the nine, a son, Henry R. Slade (1828-1894) before 1830. Aaron Slade III (or jr. of Aaron Slade II (Jr.)) (1807-unk.) did also marry but little is known as to when, but he must have stayed in New York as well. Also William Slade (1810-unk.) who married a Phebe J ______, and had one known daughter Fanny Slade would have also stayed in New York. And Newell Slade (1815-1852) who Married Marinda Rogers in about 1825, also stayed in New York and was buried there. That is the other five children, Martin, Alfred, Aaron III, William and Newell; all males who may not have even been members of the church. The question is who was the Aaron Slade Jr. who was a baptised member of the church? Was it the Aaron Slade Jr. (II), who was the son of Aaron Slade Sr. (I) and Sarah [Hannan] Crouch or was it Aaron Slade (III) (1807-unk.) the son of Aaron Slade Jr. and Mary (Molly) Knight? The BYU listing would suggest that it was Aaron Slade III, though they name him as Aaron Slade Jr.. But it was Mary/Molly's husband Aaron Slade Jr. who started west with the family and turned back at Buffalo New York according to family history and not the son Aaron Slade III. Family history does not record that any of the other children had made it to Buffalo and turned back. The BYU record about seems to mix apples with oranges as they may the Aaron Slade, father of Benjamin and Clark as being deceased, which he was not at the time of 1831 when he according to family history turned back at Buffalo. The BYU record also confuses the ancestry of Anna Rogers, who is the same as Ann Slade the daughter of Aaron Slade Jr. and Mary (Molly) Knight NOT Peck. It is this Ann Slade nee Rogers who married 2nd to Henry Alanson Cleveland according to that family's genealogy. So they cannot even keep that straight. So it well may be that the member Aaron Slade was Aaron Slade II or Jr. the son of Aaron Slade Sr. and Sarah [Hannah] Crouch, which Aaron Slade Jr. as husband of Mary (Molly) Knight (the sister of Joseph Knight Sr. who did marry Mary (Molly) Peck). And it would have therefore meant that Mary (Molly) Knight's husband who turned back at Buffalo was a member of the church who did not want to risk or feared the danger of the ferry transports of winter. Conclusion: BYU study has some mistakes in it. Anna Slade who married Henry Rogers is the same who was Ann Slade nee Rogers who married Henry Alanson Cleveland. She was the daughter of Aaron Slade Jr. and Mary (Molly) Knight, who was the sister of Joseph Knight Sr. of church history. Anna/Ann Slade [Rogers] Cleveland was the sister of Benjamin Slade, Clarke Slade, and George Washington Slade who as Ann Slade after her first husband's decease did travel with her mother Mary [Molly] Knight west with the Saints. * Note: Hortense Rogers married Elliot Hartwell and their first daughter Geneve Hartwell was born in Iowa, on 20 July 1849. So other than early in the Cleveland - Slade [Roger] marriage, Hortense was with her own husband Elliot Hartwell and their children.
