17 ¶ And Saul said to David, Behold my elder
daughter aMerab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou
valiant for me, and fight the LORD's battles. For Saul said, Let not
mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon
hima.
18 And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?

17a Let not mine hand be upon him, but let
the hand of the Philistines be upon him Now Saul's design was to
rid himself of David through the casualties of war, that the Philistines would
kill David. In this Saul sought the life of David and arrayed him in battle
to that end that he might be killed. This would one day also be the design
and plan of David against his chief captain of his army, Uriah. In Saul's case
it turned out to be but an attempt to kill David. In David's case the plan
worked and Uriah was killed in battle in such a way that the Lord would count
is as a murder at the responsibility of David.
