10 ¶ And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.
11 And the servants of Achish said unto him,
Is not this David the king of the
land?a did they not
asing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath
slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
12 And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

11a Is not this David the king of
the land? It seems that the tale had spread, the rumor or whatever
the account was that David was to be the actual king of Israel for even in
Gath was it so said about David that he was to be the king of the land. Having
the inside information concerning a matter such as this is like having money
in one's pocket, the temptation to spend it is always there, and whether it
was such as one of David's brothers or some other witness of David's anointing
to be king, they could no longer hold back and the beans were spilt that David
was the next appointed king of Israel. Saul knew it and it had been rumored
about and even to Gath.
