17 ¶ And the king said unto the footmen that stood
about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the
LORDa; because their hand also
is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it
to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall
upon the priests of the LORD.
18 And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall
upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests,
and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen
aephod.
19 And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

17a Turn, and slay the priests of the
LORD Saul's thirst for the power of a king is out of control. Once
a humble lowly Benjamite, Saul now is in persuit of he who the Lord had
chosen to replace Saul. And in open rebellion against God, Saul, like Herod
even takes to killing the LORD's priests, even as Herod's men killed Zacharias
between the porch and the altar of the temple, so did Saul's men kill the
priests of the LORD of Nob. The only thing that mattered to Saul was to be and
remain king over Israel, though now a wicked king and having the Lord withdrawn
from him any support in is position whatsoever.
