16 ¶ And aJonathan Saul's son
arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.
17 And he said unto him, Fear not: for the
hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over
Israela, and I shall be next unto
thee; and that also Saul my father aknoweth.
18 And they two made a covenant before the LORD: and David abode in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house.

17a the hand of Saul my father shall not
find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel Jonathan's heart was
pure and in tune with the will of the LORD. Jonathan had no vain ambition to
be Israel's king as did his father. And Jonathan only sought the will of the
Lord and the care of his friend in the Lord, David. A truer and more faithful
person it would be hard to find, particularly one who is not a kinsman, but
rather but a friend in the Lord.
