8 Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not smite him the second time.
9 And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for
awho can stretch forth his hand against the LORD's anointed,
and be guiltless?a
10 David said furthermore, As the LORD liveth,
the LORD shall smite him; or his day shall come to adie; or
he shall descend into battle, and perish.

9a who can stretch forth his hand against
the LORD's anointed, and be guiltless? Perhaps this be a question
for the ages. Certainly no man has the right to put assunder that which the
LORD God hath established, else they are in rebellion against God. Though such
men who have been so anointed are not perfect, and certaily Saul was quite
moved to wickedness himself, still such a man's life who has been aointed of
God lies in the hands of God and none other. As David concluded, either the
LORD would smite him or death would take its natural toll be it by nature or
even by battle.
