26 ¶ And when David came to Ziklag, he sent of
the spoil unto the elders of Judaha,
even to his friends, saying, Behold a present for you of the spoil of
the enemies of the LORD;
27 To them which were in Beth-el, and to them which were in south Ramoth, and to them which were in Jattir,
28 And to them which were in Aroer, and to them which were in Siphmoth, and to them which were in Eshtemoa,

26a he sent of the spoil unto the elders
of Judah David had set out to fight against Israel. Because of the
fears of the Philistine princes David was sent back. But while David marched
initially to fight against Israel the lands of the south were being sacked,
both of the Philistines and of the Jews and Israel. David's own wives were
taken captive. If David had fought against Israel, would this have been David's
punishment. But David had returned and determined according to the word of the
Lord to persue and over take the enemy in the south. He recaptured everything
that had been lost including his wives and much spoil as well, of which he
gave much to those of Judah in the south whereby he gained favor in that land
of Israel rather than to have fought Israel and gain disfavor. What a
turn-a-bout from what started to be and ended up being.
