1 AND Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead, and strengthened himself against Israel.
2 And he placed forces in all the fenced cities of
Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of
Ephraima, which Asa his father had taken.

2a garrisons in the land of Judah, and in
the cities of Ephraim Jehoshaphat, the son of Asa, built defensive
cities and garrisons particularlly in those cities of Ephraim which Asa had
taken. This defense was necessary because of the constant threat of Israel
coming against Judah in battle. A secondary thought here is that these 'cities of Ephraim'
may not have been in the provincial land of the tribe of Ephraim but rather some cities
that were in the province of Judah such as about Rachel's tomb which were 'cities of
Ephraim' in the kingdom of Judah.
