           CHAPTER 47

Jeremiah foretells desolation and destruction upon the Philistines.

THE word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against the aPhilistines, before that Pharaoh smote Gaza.
Thus saith the LORD; Behold, awaters rise up out of the north, and shall be an overflowing flood, and shall overflow the land, and all that is therein; the city, and them that dwell therein: then the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall howl.
At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong horses, at the rushing of his chariots, and at the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers shall not look back to their children for feebleness of hands;
Because of the day that cometh to spoil all the Philistines, and to cut off from aTyrus and Zidon every helper that remaineth: for the LORD will spoil the Philistines, the remnant of the country of Caphtor.
Baldness is come upon Gaza; Ashkelon is cut off with the remnant of their valley: how long wilt thou cut thyself?
O thou sword of the LORD, how long will it be ere thou be quiet? put up thyself into thy scabbard, rest, and be still.
How can it be quiet, seeing the LORD hath given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the sea shorea? there hath he appointed it.
a against the sea shore The Philistines occupied the sea shore from Sidon and Tyre to Gaza and Ashkelon is their western boarder and inland along that stretch of land. As to the 'flood' if it is in reference to the latter day then perhaps 'global warming' will play a roll in so flooding the coast. No such event has been recorded in history of the flooding of the land of the Philistines from Sidon to Gaza upon the sea coast. In one sense 'Philistines' references those preoccupied with the material world which would include the Phoneocians. Of course most bible commentators will tell you that that flood references the Chaldeans coming by the northern route from Sidon and on down to Gaza on their course of subduing the land. Whether a 'water' flood of a 'people/army' flood, there are other references which seem consistant that it is the Chaldeans being spoken of a the flood from the north. If not the Chaldeans, certainly a 'water' flood today would be comprised of the melting of the polar cap ice fields and thus the source of such global warming sea rise would out of the melting ice fields of the north.
