                  CHAPTER 40

The Lord challenges Job, and Job replies humbly—The Lord speaks of his power to Job—He asks: Hast thou an arm like God?—He points to his power in behemoth.

MOREOVER the LORD answered Job, and said,
Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproveth God, let him answer it.
¶ Then Job answered the LORD, and said,
Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.
Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.
¶ Then answered the LORD unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.
Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous?
Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him?
Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency; and array thyself with glory and beauty.
Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath: and behold every one that is aproud, and abase him.

Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place.
Hide them in the dust together; and bind their faces in secret.
Then will I also confess unto thee that thine own right hand can save theea.
a thine own right hand can save thee This was a contention which many of the Jews would hold, that is by their own performances of the 613 statutes, laws, performances and commandments, they could and would justify their own salvation in and of themselves. Many could not bring themselves to humbly submit themselves unto such as the atonement of Jesus Christ to look to for their salvation. This was why often taught as he did, that is that they could not save themselves but by the grace and mercy of God through the atonement of Jesus Christ. No one who has followed Adam and Eve via the fall can bring salvation unto themselves. Only in and through the merits of Jesus Christ is this possible and there is no other way. May have come to the other extreme to also say it mattereth not what a person does do, all he has to do is call upon Christ and he is saved. Paul would say to such, 'God forbid' as he was not teaching that one need not live the commandments and righteously, but that even after all one could do, it was only by and through the atonement of Jesus Christ one is redeemed. In short all will be resurrected in and through Christ unto immortallity but the degrees of heaven and the rewards there obtained is associated to the works of a person, that is to the degree of his worthiness is a person raised up to the various degrees of Heaven. Even if the Pharisee did all the works he prayed that he did, without humility before Christ and God, he is not justified. And the humility of the Publican who relied upon Jesus Christ was he who was justified in his prayer before the Lord.
¶ Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.
Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.
He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.
His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron.
He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him.
Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.
He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and afens.
The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about.
Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth.
He taketh it with his eyes: his nose pierceth through snares.
