Keeper (thy):

Psalms 121:5  “The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.”

711

Keeper of the Gate:

2 Nephi 9:41  “O then, my beloved brethren, come unto the Lord, the Holy One. Remember that his paths are righteous.  Behold, the way for man is narrow, but it lieth in a straight course before him, and the keeper of the gate is the Holy One of Israel; and he employeth no servant there; and there is none other way save it be by the gate; for he cannot be deceived, for the Lord God is his name.”

712

Key of David:  Key of David is the ‘Key of the Beloved’, who is Jesus Christ.  (See Angel, David and King David)

Revelations 3: 7  “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;”

713

Kindness and Love of God.

Titus 3:4  “But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,”

K I N G

God has always proclaimed that his people should have no king among them, for only he, God, was to be their king.  This is consistent in the Old Testament, the Book of Mormon and in our own latter-day doctrinal instructions.  In the days of the Judges lived one who was called ‘God is King’, Elimelech by name.  It is his legal and rightful posterity who Christ, Jesus is.

In those days of Judges, Israel was to have no king but they began to envy the other nations about them who had kings to be their leader and thus Israel desired of Samuel that they might have a king.  By the voice of God, Samuel consented to Israel’s demand but gave them a stiff warning of their fate under such earthly kings (1 Samuel 8).

In the Book of Mormon, the people of Nephi demanded that Nephi be their king despite Nephi’s counsel and advice against having a king.  Later in the Book of Mormon, for a period of time, the Nephites did pursue a system of Judges rather than kings.

Even in our own latter-day scripture we are told to make unto ourselves no king for God only is to be our king.

D&C 38:21  “But, verily I say unto you that in time ye shall have not king nor ruler, for I will be your king and watch over you.”

It may seem a bit contradictory to the LDS article  of faith witch states that we believe in being subject to kings, but that article is more concerned with being rightfully subject to earthly governments than the mere establishment of a king by God’s people over God’s people. For to God’s people there is but one King only, and that is God.

714

King (the/thy/your/their):

Isaiah 6:5  “¶ Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.”

Zechariah 9:9  “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem; behold, thy King cometh unto thee; he is just having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt, the foal of an ass.”

2 Nephi 16:5  “Then said I: Wo is unto me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips; and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts.”

D&C 38:21  “But, verily I say unto you that in time ye shall have not king nor ruler, for I will be your king and watch over you.”

D&C 45:59  “For the Lord shall be in their midst, and his glory shall be upon them, and he will be their king and their lawgiver.”

Hymn 66 ‘Rejoice, The Lord Is King’ v1:  “Rejoice, the

Lord is King!  Your Lord and King adore!  Mortals, give thanks and sing And triumph evermore.  Lift up your heart!  Lift up your voice!  Rejoice, again I say rejoice!  Lift up your heart!  Lift up your voice!  Rejoice, again I say rejoice!”

715

King David:  Christ is the Old Testament prophesied ‘King David’ of the Second Coming Millennial Reign of Jesus Christ.  He is the ‘King Beloved’, which David does mean ‘Beloved’.  Thus he is our ‘Beloved King’, King David.  (See David)

"The wresting of the written word assumes that someone of prophetic stature will arise in the Church in the last days, to preside as a Second David, and prepare the way before the Second Coming of the Son of Man. That there may be one or many brethren called David who preside over the Church in this dispensation is of no moment. The scriptures that speak of King David reigning in the last days are Messianic, they have reference to the Millennial reign of the Lord Jesus Christ." ~ Bruce R. McConkie, 'A New Witness for the Articles of Faith', p. 518

Jeremiah 23:5-6  "¶Behold, the days come, saith the LORD [God the Father, Elohim], that I [Elohim] will raise unto David [House of David] a righteous Branch [Christ and his people], and a King [Jesus Christ – Jehovah] shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his [Christ’s] days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name [the Messiah’s name] whereby he [Jesus Christ – Jehovah] shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS [This is Jesus Christ, Jehovah, of the Second Coming]."

Jeremiah 30:8-9  "For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts [God the Father, Elohim], that I [Elohim] will break his [Satan’s] yoke from off thy [mankind’s] neck, and will burst thy [mankind’s] bonds, and strangers [all mankind, even Gentiles] shall no more serve themselves of him [Satan]: But they shall serve the LORD their God [Elohim via the mediator Jehovah], and David [Christ the Beloved] their king, whom I [Elohim] will raise up unto them [all mankind]"

Ezekiel 34:23-24  "And I [Elohim] will set up one shepherd [Jesus Christ] over them [mankind], and he [the Christ] shall feed them, even my servant David [Elohim’s servant Son, Jehovah named David]: he [the Messiah] shall feed them [all of mankind], and he [Jehovah] shall be their shepherd [Jesus Christ]. And I the LORD [Elohim] will be their [my children’s] God [Elohim], and my servant David [Elohim’s servant Son, Jesus] a prince among them [all of mankind]; I [God the Father] the LORD [Elohim] have spoken it."

Ezekiel 37:24 "And David [Jehovah ~ Jesus Christ] my servant [Elohim’s selected Son to serve all of God’s Children in effecting Salvation] shall be king [Jehovah] over them [mankind]; and they [mankind] all shall have one shepherd [Jesus Christ]: they [mankind] shall also walk in my [God’s] judgments, and observe my [God’s] statutes, and do them."

Hosea 3:5  "Afterward shall the children of Israel return [scattered Israel is gathered, now as parts of all the nations of the earth], and seek the LORD their God [Elohim the Father], and David their king [Jesus Christ – Jehovah the Son]; and shall fear the LORD [GOD] and his [God’s] goodness in the latter days."

While all the prophecies of the Lord and his Second Coming and reign are about this same King David who is Christ, there are a few more scriptures which mention him by name as being the name David.  These other scriptures can be reviewed under the name ‘David’. (See also David)

716

Alma 5:50  “Yea, thus saith the Spirit: Repent, all ye ends of the earth, for the kingdom of heaven is soon at hand; yea, the Son of God cometh in his glory, in his might, majesty, power, and dominion. Yea, my beloved brethren, I say unto you, that the Spirit saith: Behold the glory of the King of all the earth; and also the King of heaven shall very soon shine forth among all the children of men.”

727

730

King of Nations:

(DISCOURSES OF BRIGHAM YOUNG, p. 113)

By and by the world will be overturned according to the words of the prophet, and we will see the reign of righteousness enter in, and sin and iniquity will have to walk off. But the power and principles of evil, if they can be called principles, will never yield one particle to the righteous march of the Savior, only as they are beaten back inch by inch, and we have got to take the ground by force. Yes, by the mental force of faith, and by good works, the march forth of the Gospel will increase, spread, grow and prosper, until the nations of the earth will feel that Jesus has the right to rule King of nations as he does King of Saints. 14:226.

731

King of Peace:

Hebrews 7:2  “To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;”

732

King of Righteousness:  Often it is a matter of which comes first and from what perspective, either a temporal limited perspective of an eternal all inclusive perspective.  In since of the spiritual and temporal, the spiritual came first in the preexistence and then the temporal came second.  Thus in the ‘spiritual sense’ Jehovah was the ‘KING OF RIGHTEOUSNESS’ long before the man who was renamed Melchizedek ever lived upon the earth.  And that man was named after one of the names of God.

(THE PROMISED MESSIAH, p. 449)

            2. Melchizedek is named as a type of Christ. Our revelations tell us he was known as the Prince of Peace, the King of Peace, the King of Heaven, and the King of Righteousness, all of which are the very name-titles that apply to our Lord.

And when one comprehends that the man ‘Melchizedek’ was named ‘because’ or ‘for’ his being a ‘type of Christ’, then it gives new perspectives to the Joseph Smith Translation of Hebrew 7:1-3 which states:

“For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him, to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; For [because] this Melchizedek was ordained a priest after the order of the Son of God, which order was without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life. And all those who are ordained unto this priesthood are made like unto the Son of God, abiding a priest continually.” (JST, Hebrew 7:1-3.)

Now in the temporal sense, the man named Melchizedek was born and did live in the days of Abraham, thus he did come before the birth of the Savior, and thus when Christ is called the ‘King of Righteousness’, he may be taught to be named or called after Melchizedek, that is after the order of Melchizedek, therefore being the King of Righteousness after the order of Melchizedek.  But the irony is that Melchizedek was after the order of the Son of God, which is the order of the Son, Jehovah, who is Jesus Christ.

It is the proverbial case of the first shall be last and the last shall be first.  And so it was and is the same in such other names of God given to man such as Yehoshua (Joshua) meaning Jehovah is Salvation and David meaning the same as the BELOVED.  Yehoshua was the name of Jehovah in the preexistence, as was the BELOVED, and when those names where given to Joshua and David, it was a matter of man being called after one of the names of God.  Later others consider from a temporal frame of reference that Jesus was named after Joshua and that the King David of the Millennium, who is also Christ, is so named David after his mortal ancestor.  Which in the temporal sense can be so considered.  But in the eternal frame of reference, Jehovah held these name long before men were and thus when Jehovah as Jesus Christ wears these names in mortality, he is merely taking upon himself such names that were his from before the foundation of the world.

Hebrews 7:2  “To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;”

Isaiah 32:1 & Introduction

“King Messiah shall reign in righteousness—The land of Israel shall be a wilderness until the day of restoration and gathering.

“1 BEHOLD, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.”

733

King of Saints:

Revelation 15:3  “And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvelous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.”

734

King of Salem:  Melchizedek, which means King of Righteousness, is one of the names of God.  It was given to the ‘Great High Priest’ of Abraham’s era as that Great High Priest has also sought after and found the Kingdom of Heaven.  It is ironic that we today consider ‘Melchizedek, which is one of God’s names, to be a less formal title for the High Priesthood of God.

Hebrews 7:2  “To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;”

735

King of Sion:  (See King of Zion)

Matthew 21:5  “Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.”

John 12:15  “Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt.”

Zechariah 9:9  “¶ Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”

736

King of the Ages:

???

737

King of the Jews:

Matthew 2:2  “Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.”

Matthew 27:11  “And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.”

Matthew 27:37  “And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

Mark 15:9  “But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?”

Luke 23:3  “And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews?  And he (Jesus) answered him, and said, Thous sayest it.”

John 18:33  “Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?”

John 19:21  “Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.”

The Latin version can be translated as being ‘Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum’, meaning ‘Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews’. As such it has been often abbreviated into a type of an anachronism as ‘INRI’ and has therefore been used to represent the longer title in many depictions of the crucifixion of Jesus.

738

King of Zion:

Moses 7:53  “And the Lord said: Blessed is he through whose seed Messiah shall come;

for he saith I am Messiah, the King of Zion, the Rock of Heaven, which is broad as

eternity; whose cometh in at the gate and climbeth up by me shall never fall; wherefore,

blessed are they of whom I have spoken, for they shall come forth with songs of

everlasting joy.”

Zechariah 9:9  “¶ Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”

739

King Who Cometh in the Name of the Lord:

Luke 19:38  “Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.”

740

King Who Reigns in Salem’s Tower:

Hymns:  Behold, the Mountain of the Lord v2  “The rays that shine from Zion’s hill Shall lighten ev’ry land, The King who reigns in Salem’s tower Shall all the world command Among the nations he shall judge; His judgments truth shall guide; His scepter shall protect the just And quell the sinner’s pride.”

741

Kinsman:

Ruth 4:14  “And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.”

742

Kinsman Redeemer:  One of the covenant ordinances practiced by the Israelites under the Law of Moses was that of a Redeeming Kinsman where by the living might be able to perform for the dead or that one might be able to perform vicariously the works of another and the other receive the benefit of such surrogate performance.

Boaz performed a double fold function in taking Ruth to wife and redeeming the property which belonged to the House of Elimelech, Mahlon and Chilion.   The Mosaic Laws governing these two performances are recorded in Deuteronomy 25:5-10 and beginning in Leviticus 25:25.  In the instance of Boaz’ marriage to Ruth, he was raising up seed to the dead (Deuteronomy 25:6), meaning that Ruth’s firstborn son of Boaz would in fact be the son of Mahlon and the household of Elimelech.  Obed was that son.

The purpose for the redemption of the property of Elimelech, Mahlon and Chilion was further set out by the words of Boaz himself as he stated the following:

Ruth 4:5   “Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.”

Buying the land of inheritance of the house of Elimelech was not a purchase that Boaz would hold and redeem unto himself.  The near of kin declined the performance of the redeeming kinsman based upon the fact that what he would spend to buy the land would but pass on to the seed of the firstborn male of Ruth, and would not remain in his own household but be of the house of Elimelech.  That purchase, the nearer kinsman stated, would ‘mar’ his own heir’s inheritance by reducing their portion in the wealth of that household.  And the nearer of kin was not willing to so mar his inheritance (Ruth 4:6).

Thus Boaz performed the function of the redeeming kinsman and surrogate husband to the house of Elimelech.  Boaz bought all the traditional lands of inheritance of the house of Elimelech, Mahlon and Chilion (Ruth 4:9).  And that property became the inheritance of Obed as it was “ . . . to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.”  The dead being Mahlon.  And according to the Law of Moses, Boaz became the surrogate father to Obed, but Obed was legally and rightfully considered to be of the house of Mahlon, Naomi and Elimelech (Deuteronomy 25:6) as stated: “And it shall be, that the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.”

It is unfortunate that from the aspect of the Jewish compilation of the Old Testament that the ‘true linage’ of Jesus is not given.  It would be significant to know just what was Christ’s Ephrathite linage, his true, legal and rightful linage.  As is, one is left to but presume based upon logic and reason that such linage was of the house of Ephraim and Joseph.

But perhaps even more significant is that Christ for us performs as our Kinsman Redeemer in relation to the Kingdom of the Father of our Spirits.  Christ takes upon himself the sins of those who believe on His name and live God’s commandments, that they may be redeemed through Christ’s surrogate performance as Father, back into the Kingdom of God.  And thus to receive a celestial glory of merit.

743

Knew No Sin:  Jesus [Jehoshua] took upon himself the sins of the world.  In His appearance before the presence of the Father he was ‘clothed’ with the sins of the world.  Whether this gives any hint of the logic of the ‘accuser’ [Satan] would be a matter of speculation.  But the filthy garment was removed by his fulfillment of the task given him and he was crowned by God (See Zechariah chapter 3).

Zechariah 3:3  “Now Joshua [Jehoshua, Jesus] was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.”

2 Corinthians 5:21  “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

Hebrews 4:15  “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”

1 Peter 2:22  “Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:”

744

Knowledge:  The first attribute of God according to the Lectures on Faith is knowledge.  He is ‘all knowing’ which is often referred to him being Omnipotent.  (See God of Knowledge and Omnipotent)

Lectures on Faith 4:5  FirstKnowledge. Acts 15:18: "Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world." Isaiah 46:9-10 (italics added): "Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure."”

1 Samuel 2:3  “Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.”

Acts 15:18  Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.”

Knowledge of Good and Evil

Genesis 3:5  “For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:22; Moses 4:11, 28)

Prior to our coming to earth, as the offspring of God, we where like unto God and we knew what was good and evil.  We had not yet experienced subjecting the physical to the spirit, but we had the knowledge.  And as part of the testing of the nature of our immortal soul, a veil of forgetfulness was drawn across our mind.

Part of becoming like God is, is the matter of us also gaining such great knowledge as his is.  This was one of the primary objectives of Abraham in seeking the blessings of the fathers as it states in the Book of Abraham.

Abraham 1:2  “And, finding there was greater happiness and peace and rest for me, I sought for the blessings of the fathers, and the right whereunto I should be ordained to administer the same; having been myself a follower of righteousness, desiring also to be one who possessed great knowledge, and to be a greater follower of righteousness, and to possess a greater knowledge, and to be a father of many nations, a prince of peace, and desiring to receive instructions, and to keep the commandments of God, I became a rightful heir, a High Priest, holding the right belonging to the fathers.”

This right involved the everlasting covenant of eternal progression and becoming as God is.  This is the prime objective of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the gospel plan.  It is to bring us not only to God, but to bring us unto being one with God and the Son, to be even as they are, Gods.

We Are to Obtain Knowledge after the Image of God

Colossians 2:2-3  “That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

Colossians 3:10  “And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:”

D&C 132:18-21  “Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection.  And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come.  There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated—And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.”

Line upon line, precept upon precept, we gain knowledge, understanding, truth, wisdom and intelligence, learning just what God is so that we might strive to become like him.  This is our objective.  We cannot become what we do not know and understand.  To emulate God we must know what it is that we are striving to be.  This gives added meaning to the commandments of Christ in relation to searching the scriptures and coming to know our God.

2 Peter 3:19  “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”

John 5:39  “¶ Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”

Eternal Life, Exaltation, is to become as God is.  How can we become as God is if we do not know what he is like?  And how else do we come to the knowledge of our God but through his word, the scriptures as impressed upon our minds by the Holy Ghost and our obedience to his word?

John 17:3  “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

As we come to ‘know’ God, we can then so shape and form our own countenances and images into being like unto him.  This process of coming to know and then coming to be of the same mind and will as God is the process of eternal progression, for when and if we see him in eternity, we shall be like unto him, for we will have learned to know him and to be like him, and we shall see him as he is (1 John 3:1-2).

Ephesians 4:13  “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:”

More than just being of the same religious sect is the meaning of Ephesians 4:13.  When considered in the light of becoming as God is as we emulate and become as Christ is, the verse presents itself as stating that we become perfected as we grow in the knowledge and image of the stature of the fullness of Christ, which unto being even as God is.  And when considered in light of the Lectures on Faith, this verse is but a summary of exercising faith unto becoming as God is.

D&C 131:6  “It is impossible for a man to be saved in ignorance.”

This is why it is impossible to receive salvation in ignorance.  Knowledge is the first attribute of God and if we are to become like him, we must obtain knowledge and we cannot remain in ignorance and be as God is.

Key of Knowledge

There is a ‘key of knowledge’ upon which all our performances in the Lord are based.  We cannot perform unless we know what and how to perform.  That is obvious logic.  And as the ‘key(s) of knowledge’ are restored, then are minds are enlightened with understanding the courses of action we must follow to become as God is.(Oh My Father ~ until the Key of Knowledge was restored, I knew not why)

D&C 123:14  “Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord from heaven. As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy; and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. And as are the records on the earth in relation to your dead, which are truly made out, so also are the records in heaven. This, therefore, is the sealing and binding power, and, in one sense of the word, the keys of the kingdom, which consist in the key of knowledge.”

D&C 121:33  “How long can rolling waters remain impure? What power shall stay the heavens? As well might man stretch forth his puny arm to stop the Missouri river in its decreed course, or to turn it up stream, as to hinder the Almighty from pouring down knowledge from heaven upon the heads of the Latter-day Saints.”

Proverbs 9:10  “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”

Proverb 17:27  “He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.”

Knowledge of Ministering as God Ministers

When one becomes like God, they will minister his kingdom as God would minister in His Kingdom.  It is the nature of the natural man to act selfishly and for his own considered concerns above those of others, such minister unrighteously in their positions in the Church.  But to be like God is to minister as he would minister unto his children.  The knowledge has been given us to know and understand what that difference between the administration of the natural man and what our administration should be if we are becoming as God is.

D&C 121:39-46  “We have learned by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion.  Hence many are called, but few are chosen.  No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned; By kindness, and pure knowledge, which shall greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy, and without guile—Reproving betimes with sharpness, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost; and then showing forth afterwards an increase of love toward him whom thou hast reproved, lest he esteem thee to be his enemy; That he may know that thy faithfulness is stronger than the cords of death.  Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the household of faith, and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven.  The Holy Ghost shall be thy constant companion, and thy scepter an unchanging scepter of righteousness and truth; and thy dominion shall be an everlasting dominion, and without compulsory means it shall flow unto thee forever and ever.”

Knowledge of All Things:

Lectures on Faith 4:11  By a little reflection it will be seen that the idea of the existence of these attributes in the Deity is necessary to enable any rational being to exercise faith in him; for without the idea of the existence of these attributes in the Deity men could not exercise faith in him for life and salvation; seeing that without the knowledge of all things God would not be able to save any portion of his creatures; for it is by reason of the knowledge which he has of all things, from the beginning to the end, that enables him to give that understanding to his creatures by which they are made partakers of eternal life; and if it were not for the idea existing in the minds of men that God had all knowledge it would be impossible for them to exercise faith in him.”

Lecture 4:18  “In view, then, of the existence of these attributes, the faith of the saints can become exceedingly strong, abounding in righteousness unto the praise and glory of God, and can exert its mighty influence in searching after wisdom and understanding, until it has obtained a knowledge of all things that pertain to life and salvation.”

All the animal sacrifices of he Law of Moses, as all the ordinances and performances of that law do, points to Christ and his atoning sacrifice for the redemption of man.  Christ is the symbolic sacrafical ‘Lamb’ which is sacrificed in order for man to be saved.  The blood of the Lamb was marked upon the doors of the Hebrews during their deliverance from Egypt that the destroying angel would pash them by.  This is the central theme of the Passover, the Lamb being sacrificed in order that man may be delived from destruction.  The event in Egypt was but a similitude of the ultimate sacrifice of the Lamb of God, who is Jesus Christ.  Jesus performed the atonement, redemption and resurrection for the benefit of man, that man may be redeemed from the Fall of Adam and have their sins removed whereby they may enter into the Kingdom of God and his glory.

746

Lamb:

Moses 7:47  “And behold, Enoch saw the day of the coming of the Son of Man, even in the flesh; and his soul rejoiced, saying: The Righteous is lifted up, and the Lamb is slain from the foundation of the world; and through faith I am in the bosom of the Father, and behold, Zion is with me.”

1 Nephi 13:35  “For, behold, saith the Lamb: I will manifest myself unto thy seed, that they shall write many things which I shall minister unto them, which shall be plain and precious; and after thy seed shall be destroyed, and dwindle in unbelief, and also the seed of thy brethren, behold, these things shall be hid up, to come forth unto the  Gentiles, by the gift and power of the Lamb.”

1 Nephi 13:40  “And the angel spake unto me, saying: These last records, which thou hast seen among the Gentiles, shall establish the truth of the first, which are of the twelve apostles of the Lamb, and shall make known the plain and precious things which have been taken away from them; and shall make known to all kindreds, tongues, and people, that the Lamb of God is the Son of the Eternal Father, and the Savior of the world; and that all men must come unto him, or they cannot be saved.”

Rev. 13:8  “And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

Revelation 17:14  “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.”

D&C 65:3  “Yea, a voice crying--Prepare ye the way of the Lord, prepare ye the supper of the Lamb, make ready for the Bridegroom.”

D&C 88:115  “For Michael shall fight their battles, and shall overcome him who seeketh the throne of him who sitteth upon the throne, even the Lamb.”

D&C 133:56  “And the graves of the saints shall be opened; and they shall come forth and stand on the right hand of the Lamb, when he shall stand upon Mount Zion, and upon the holy city, the New Jerusalem; and they shall sing the song of the Lamb, day and night forever and ever.”

747

Lamb of God:

1 Nephi 10:10  “And after he had baptized the Messiah with water, he should behold and bear record that he had baptized the Lamb of God, who should take away the sins of the world.”

1 Nephi 11:16  “And he said unto me: Knowest thou the condescension of God?  And I said unto him: I know that he loveth his children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things.  And he said unto me: Behold, the virgin whom thou seest is the mother of the Son of God, after the manner of the flesh.  And it came to pass that I beheld that she was carried away in the Spirit; and after she had been carried away in the Spirit for the space of a time the angel spake unto me, saying: Look!  And I looked and beheld the virgin again, bearing a child in her arms.  And the angel said unto me: Behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Son of the Eternal Father!”

1 Nephi 11:26-33  “And the angel said unto me again: Look and behold the condescension of God!  And I looked and beheld the Redeemer of the world, of whom my father had spoken; and I also beheld the prophet who should prepare the way before him. And the Lamb of God went forth and was baptized of him; and after he was baptized, I beheld the heavens open, and the Holy Ghost come down out of heaven and abide upon him in the form of a dove.  And I beheld that he went forth ministering unto the people, in power and great glory; and the multitudes were gathered together to hear him; and I beheld that they cast him out from among them.  And I also beheld twelve others following him. And it came to pass that they were carried away in the Spirit from before my face, and I saw them not.  And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me again, saying: Look! And I looked, and I beheld the heavens open again, and I saw angels descending upon the children of men; and they did minister unto them.  And he spake unto me again, saying: Look! And I looked, and I beheld the Lamb of God going forth among the children of men. And I beheld multitudes of people who were sick, and who were afflicted with all manner of diseases, and with devils and unclean spirits; and the angel spake and showed all these things unto me. And they were healed by the power of the Lamb of God; and the devils and the unclean spirits were cast out. And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me again, saying: Look! And I looked and beheld the Lamb of God, that he was taken by the people; yea, the Son of the everlasting God was judged of the world; and I saw and bear record.  And I, Nephi, saw that he was lifted up upon the cross and slain for the sins of the world.”

John 1:29  “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”

John 1:36  “And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!”

D&C 88:106  “And again, another angel shall sound his trump, which is the seventh angel, saying: It is finished; it is finished! The Lamb of God hath overcome and trodden the wine-press alone, even the wine-press of the fierceness of the wrath of Almighty God.”

748

Lamb Slain from the Foundation of the World:  It was the Plan of God from the foundation of the world that Christ the Lamb would suffer and be slain for the sins of man and the Fall of Adam.  It did was not suddenly instituted just because Adam Fell.  It had been so established to be the Plan from before the foundation of the world.  It was known that Adam would fall and lead man into the second estate and that Jehovah as Christ the Redeemer would provided salvation from sin and the Fall of Man.

Revelation 13:8  “And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

749

Lamb that was Slain:

Revelation 5:12  “Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.”

750

Lamb Who Is in the Midst of the Throne:

Revelation 7:17  “For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.”

751

Lamb Without Blemish:

1 Peter 1:19  “But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:”

752

Lamp (my):

2 Samuel 22:29  “For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness.”

753

Language Edifieth:

D&C 52:16  “He that speaketh, whose spirit is contrite, whose language is meek and

edifieth, the same is of God if he obey mine ordinances.”

754

Language Is Meek:

D&C 52:16  “He that speaketh, whose spirit is contrite, whose language is meek and

edifieth, the same is of God if he obey mine ordinances.”

755

Last (See also End and Omega):

Isaiah 44:6  “Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.”

1 Nephi 20:12  “Hearken unto me, O Jacob, and Israel my called, for I am he; I am the first, and I am also the last.”

756

Last Adam:  Adam is  a name for God which means man.  The first ‘man’ was given the name of ‘Man’,  ‘Man’ being on of the names of God such as the ‘Son of Man’.  When God called Michael by the name ‘Adam’, he was giving him one of the names of God, ‘Man’.  We are of the race of God.  Man is the race of God.  We are his children. He is our Father.  We are created in his image, being in the image and race of God.

Now, where the ‘first Man’ or ‘first Adam’ did bring about the Fall, it will be the ‘second Man’, ‘second Adam’, who is called the ‘last Man’ or ‘last Adam’ who will redeem man from the Fall.  The quickening spirit is the salvation, redemption and resurrection of man accomplished.  We all followed Adam, (Man), into this second estate and probation to be proved.  We will all follow the last Adam, (Man), who is Christ, into the kingdoms of glory of our God at the end and termination of this probationary state.  ‘For since by man [Adam] came death by man [Adam] comes also the resurrection of the dead, for as in Adam all die even so in Christ shall be made alive.

1 Corinthians 15:45  “And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.”

757

Law (the):

D&C 88:18-21  “Therefore, it must needs be sanctified from all unrighteousness, that it may be prepared for the celestial glory; For after it hath filled the measure of its creation, it shall be crowned with glory, even with the presence of God the Father; That bodies who are of the celestial kingdom may possess it forever and ever; for, for this intent was it made and created, and for this intent are they sanctified.  And they who are not sanctified through the law which I have given unto you, even the law of Christ, must inherit another kingdom, even that of a terrestrial kingdom, or that of a telestial kingdom.”

In the same sense that Christ is the Word, the Word of God, the Iron Rod unto salvation, so it is that the Word of the Lord is the Law.  The Law is fulfilled in Christ and we through him receive our salvation.  In its broadest frame, the Law is the Gospel of Christ, the Everlasting Gospel the fullness of which is contained in his word, the scriptures.  And there is no purer source of that Gospel, that law, that word of God than is found in the Book of Mormon, it being brought forth through the hands of prophets and not by the errors of the translations of men.  (See Word and Gospel

D&C 132:12  “I am the Lord thy God; and I give unto you this commandment—that no man shall come unto the Father but by me or by my word, which is my law, saith the Lord.”

758

Law of Christ:

759

Lawgiver:

James 4:12  “There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?”

D&C 38:22  “Wherefore, hear my voice and follow me, and you shall be a free people, and ye shall have no laws but my laws when I come, for I am your lawgiver, and what can stay my hand?

D&C 45:59  “For the Lord shall be in their midst, and his glory shall be upon them, and

he will be their king and their lawgiver.”

 760

Leader:

Isaiah 55:4  “Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people.”

761

Learned He Obedience:

Hebrews 5:8  “Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;”

762

Least:

D&C 50:26-27   “He that is ordained of God and sent forth, the same is appointed to be the greatest, notwithstanding he is the least and the servant of all.   Wherefore, he is possessor of all things; for all things are subject unto him, both in heaven and on the earth, the life and the light, the Spirit and the power, sent forth by the will of the Father through Jesus Christ, his Son.”

763

Least of These:

D&C 42:38  “For inasmuch as ye do it unto the least of these, ye do it unto me.”

764

Leper Messiah:

Amoung the traditions of the Rabbi, there is one concerning the coming of the 'Leper Messiah'. It seems to be but a strange traditions but to what it might relate one may consider. Certainly one of the 'Least of These' would be whom the Jews did consider to be the leper. Also the Jews would have also so thought so much lowly of a 'Samaritan Messiah' no better and perhaps even worse than a 'Leper Messiah', for it was the 'unclean leper' who the Jews did refuse admitance to the temple, so also they did treat the Samaritan. And thus either in the 'least of these' and/or the 'Samaritan' may be seen the lowliness of such a 'Leper Messiah'.

765

Liberator:

Jacob 2:19 "And after ye have obtained a hope in Christ ye shall obtain riches, if ye seek them; and ye will seek them for the intent to do good—to clothe the naked, and to feed the hungry, and to liberate the captive, and administer relief to the sick and afflicted."

Now it is in this concept of liberating the captive in which Jesus Christ may become identified as the 'liberator.

Isaiah 61:1 "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good thidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;"

This is the mission of Jesus Christ/Jehovah, that by his atonement he may set the captives free opening the prisons doors caused by the fall of man. And it is unto this end that Christ is the great 'Liberator.

D&C 138:31 "And the chosen messengers went forth to declare the acceptable day of the Lord and proclaim liberty to the captives who were bound [my sin], even unto all who would repent of their sins and receive the gospel."

By coming to live the laws and commandments of God one is liberated and obtains liberty. And this liberty is what is true freedom, freedom from sin through the power of the atonement and the grace of God.

766

D&C 50:26-27   “He that is ordained of God and sent forth, the same is appointed to be the greatest, notwithstanding he is the least and the servant of all.   Wherefore, he is possessor of all things; for all things are subject unto him, both in heaven and on the earth, the life and the light, the Spirit and the power, sent forth by the will of the Father through Jesus Christ, his Son.”

767

Life and light of the World:

mine own, and mine own received me not. I am the light which shineth in darkness,

and the darkness comprehendeth it not.

D&C 84:45  “For the word of the Lord is truth, and whatsoever is truth is light, and whatsoever is light is Spirit, even the Spirit of Jesus Christ.”

Hymn 89 ‘The Lord Is My Light’ v1-4: All verses of this hymn begin with the words, “The Lord is my light”.  And in the chorus it is repeated, “The Lord is my light; He is my joy and my song.  By day and by night he leads, he leads me along.”

Literal Parent:  The sectarian world who calls him Father but deny the Fatherhood of God the Eternal Father.  He is the literal Father of all the spirits of men.  We are of the race of God, anointed with the heir-ship and right of opportunity to become as our Father, God is.  He is also the literal physical Father of the Only Begotten Son.  Jesus Christ is not only the literal first born son of the father in spirit, but he is the literal son of the Father in the flesh.

F&SDE 1:1  "Father" as Literal ParentScriptures embodying the ordinary signification—literally that of Parent—are too numerous and specific to require citation. The purport of these scriptures is to the effect that God the Eternal Father, whom we designate by the exalted name-title "Elohim," is the literal Parent of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and of the spirits of the human race. . . . “

Living Word:

As Jesus Christ/Jehovah is also referred to as the Word, and that he also is called as the Living God, then it is a correct reference to him to be called the 'Living Word'. The Word of God is alive and true as ever it was, is or ever will be. And in a play on those words, the very spoken, stated, and recorded Word of God is also indeed the 'living word'. It also remains through the ages the same and living.

836

Lord of Glory:

1 Corinthians 2:8  “Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.”

James 2:1  “MY brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.”

837

Lord of Hosts:

Isaiah 6:5  “¶ Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.”

1 Nephi 20:2  “Nevertheless, they call themselves of the holy city, but they do not stay themselves upon the God of Israel, who is the Lord of Hosts; yea, the Lord of Hosts is his name.”

3 Ne. 24:1  “AND it came to pass that he commanded them that they should write the words which the Father had given unto Malachi, which he should tell unto them. And it came to pass that after they were written he expounded them. And these are the words which he did tell unto them, saying: Thus said the Father unto Malachi—Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom ye seek shall suddenly come to his temple, even the dmessenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in; behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of Hosts.”

And if they persecute you, so persecuted they the prophets and righteous men that were before you. For all this there is a reward in heaven.

. . .

“For I am about to restore many things to the earth, pertaining to the priesthood, saith the Lord of Hosts.  And again, let all the records be had in order, that they may be put in the archives of my holy temple, to be held in remembrance from generation to generation, saith the Lord of Hosts.”

838

Lord of Lords:  This reference to Jehovah who is Christ as being the King of Kings and Lord of Lords means and fully implies that he is over all and all is subject unto him.

1 Timothy 6:15  “Which in his times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;”

Revelation 17:14  “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

840

Lord of Righteousness:  (See also Lord our Righteousness and Zedekiah)

841

Lord of Spirits:  It would seem that the name ‘Lord of Spirits’ is used in reference to God the Father of Spirits in the Book of Enoch.  Yet one must also consider that Jehovah took upon himself the name(s) of the Father, acting ‘As’, ‘For’ and ‘In Behalf Of’ the Father in all things.  Thus acting as God the Father as the God whom we are given to worship, we often address him in the names of the Father, he being our mediator, advocate and God the Father’s representative to us.

Enoch 48:2-7   “And at that hour that Son of Man was named In the presence of the Lord of Spirits, And his name before the Head of Days. Yea, before the sun and the signs were created, Before the stars of the heaven were made, His name was named before the Lord of Spirits.  He shall be a staff to the righteous whereon to stay themselves and not fall, And he shall be the light of the Gentiles, And the hope of those who are troubled of heart. All who dwell on earth shall fall down and worship before him, And will praise and bless and celebrate with song the Lord of Spirits. And for this reason hath he been chosen and hidden before Him, Before the creation of the world and for evermore. And the wisdom of the Lord of Spirits hath revealed him to the holy and righteous; For he hath preserved the lot of the righteous, Because they have hated and despised this world of unrighteousness, And have hated all its works and ways in the name of the Lord of Spirits: For in his name they are saved, And according to his good pleasure hath it been in regard to their life.”

842

Lord of the Field:

D&C 88:56  “And the lord of the field went unto the first in the first hour, and tarried with him all that hour, and he was made glad with the light of the countenance of his lord.”

Matthew 9:38  “Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.”

844

Lord of the Sabbath:

Mark 2:28  “Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

845

Lord of the Vineyard.

Jacob 5:8  “And behold, saith the Lord of the vineyard, I take away many of these young and tender branches, and I will graft them whithersoever I will; and it mattereth not that if it so be that the root of this tree will perish, I may preserve the fruit thereof unto myself; wherefore, I will take these young and tender branches, and I will graft them whithersoever I will.”

Matthew 20:8  “So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.”

846

Lord of the Whole Earth:

Psalms 97:5  “The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.”

Micah 4:13  “Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion: for I will make thine horn iron, and I will make thy hoofs brass: and thou shalt beat in pieces many people: and I will consecrate their gain unto the LORD, and their substance unto the Lord of the whole earth.”

847

Lord Omnipotent:

Mosiah 3:5  “For behold, the time cometh, and is not far distant, that with power, the Lord Omnipotent who reigneth, who was, and is from all eternity to all eternity, shall come down from heaven among the children of men, and shall dwell in a tabernacle of clay, and shall go forth amongst men, working mighty miracles, such as healing the sick, raising the dead, causing the lame to walk, the blind to receive their sight, and the deaf to hear, and curing all manner of diseases.”

848

Lord Our God (their, thy):

1 Nephi 2:7  “And it came to pass that he built an altar of stones, and made an offering unto the Lord, and gave thanks unto the Lord our God.”

Mosiah 9:3  “And yet, I being over-zealous to inherit the land of our fathers, collected as many as were desirous to go up to possess the land, and started again on our journey into the wilderness to go up to the land; but we were smitten with famine and sore afflictions; for we were slow to remember the Lord our God.”

Mosiah 11:22  “And it shall come to pass that they shall know that I am the Lord their God, and am a jealous God, visiting the iniquities of my people.”

Mosiah 13:13  “And again: Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquities of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generations of them that hate me;”

849

Lord Our Lord:  It is one thing to recognize that the Lord is God and a further thing to accept him as one’s personal Lord and God.  Even King Nebuchadnezzar did recognize Jehovah as a true God of the Jews, but he did not accept Him to be his own personal Lord and God.  When one states such phrases as ‘Lord My God’ and ‘Lord Our Lord’, we are recognizing that God is not only God, but that he is our God.

Psalms 8:1  “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.”

850

LORD [YHWH] OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS (THE):

Jeremiah 23:6  “In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

It is most significant that it is Jeremiah, in the days of Zedekiah, that it is stated that the name of the Lord, the name of the Messiah would be called ‘THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS’, for that is the very name by which the then reigning King has been called and named, Zedekiah which means ‘LORD RIGHTEOUSNESS’.  (See Lord of Righteousness, Zedekiah)

Jeremiah 33:16  “In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The LORD our righteousness.

What a contrast between the Zedekaih of the days of Jeremiah and the ‘ZEDEKIAH’ yet to come from Jeremiah’s perspective, he being the righteous Messiah, Jesus Christ, the ‘LORD RIGHTEOUSNESS’ in whom is all righteousness and perfection as to whom we are to become like unto.

851

Lord Returns with Zion:

Hymn 48 Glorieous Thing Are Sung of Zion  v4   “When the Lord returns with Zion, And we hear the watchman cry, Then we’ll surely be united, And we’ll all see eye to eye.  Then we’ll mingle with the angel, And the Lord will bless his own.  Then the earth will be as Eden, And we’ll know as we are known.

853

Lord’s Anointed:

Psalms: 2:2  “The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together,

against the Lord, and against his Anointed, saying,”

854

Lord's Christ:  In reference to the relationship between God the Father, who can and is often referenced by the title ‘Lord’, Jesus Christ is the ‘Lord’s Messiah’ or the ‘Lord’s Christ’ meaning and implying that Jehovah as Jesus Christ is God the Father’s Savior and Redeemer of man, even the anointed Messiah.

Luke 2:26  “And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.”

Revelation 11:15  “And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”

855

Lord's Doing:

Lord their God:

Abraham 3:25  “And we will prove them herewith, to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them;”

Mosiah 11:22  “And it shall come to pass that they shall know that I am the Lord their God, and am a jealous God, visiting the iniquities of my people.”

857

Lord thy God:

Abraham 2:7  “For I am the Lord thy God; I dwell in heaven; the earth is my footstool; I stretch my hand over the sea, and it obeys my voice; I cause the wind and the fire to be my chariot; I say to the mountains—Depart hence—and behold, they are taken away by a whirlwind, in an instant, suddenly.”

Mosiah 13:13

D&C 10:29  “Now, behold, they have altered these words, because Satan saith unto

them: He hath deceived you--and thus he flattered them away to do iniquity, to get thee

to tempt the Lord thy God.”

858

Lord thy Maker:

2 Nephi 8:13

859

Lord Whom Ye Seek:

3 Ne. 24:1  “AND it came to pass that he commanded them that they should write the words which the Father had given unto Malachi, which he should tell unto them. And it came to pass that after they were written he expounded them. And these are the words which he did tell unto them, saying: Thus said the Father unto Malachi—Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom ye seek shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in; behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of Hosts.”

860

Lord,ÿ:  As the Jew refrains from the verbalization of the Holy name of God, it is also frequently abbreviated to further avoid the vain and frequent use of the name in written form.  Thus ‘Lord,ÿ’ is a Jewish shorthand form of the more formalized name of Lord Jehovah or LORD YHWH.

861

Love:

Isaiah 63:9-10  “9 In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.

“¶ But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.”

God’s love is a free gift given, it is the gift of His Son which redeems the world, but man by his own rebellion can forestall and annul the effects by turning out the holy Spirit by whom God’s love and redemption comes.

Hosea 14:4  “¶ I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.”

John 15:13  “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

Romans 13:10  Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Ephesians 3:17-19  “That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.”

1 John 4:7-8  “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.  He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”

1 John 4:16  “And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.”

Hymn 87 ‘God Is Love’ v1-3: Each verse ends with “God Is Love.”

862

Love of Christ:

Romans 8:35  “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?”

2 Corinthians 5:14  “For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:”

Moroni 7:47  “But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.”

863

Love of God:

Mosiah 4:12  “And behold, I say unto you that if ye do this ye shall always rejoice, and be filled with the love of God, and always retain a remission of your sins; and ye shall grow in the knowledge of the glory of him that created you, or in the knowledge of that which is just and true.”

Luke 11:42  “But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.”

John 5:42  “But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.”

Romans 5:5  “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”

Romans 8:39  “Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

2 Thessalonians 3:5  “And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.”

1 John 2:5  “But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.”

1 John 5:2-3  “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.  For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.”

864

Love of the Father:

Lectures on Faith 5:3  “ . . . Through the love of the Father, the mediation of Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, they are to be heirs of God, and joint heirs with Jesus Christ.”

865

Lower Than the Angels:

Hebrews 2:7  “Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:”

Hebrews 2:9  “ But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.”

866

Lowly:

Zechariah 9:9  “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem; behold, thy King cometh unto thee; he is just having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt, the foal of an ass.”

Matthew 11:29  “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

867

Lowly in Heart:

Matthew 11:29  “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

Made in the Likeness of Men:  In the preexistence as the firstborn spirit son of the Father, Jehovah, who is the same as Christ, was in the ‘form of God’ his Father.  Logic does not reason differently.  When the Father elected him or chose him to be the anointed redeemer of mankind, Jehovah essentially took upon himself the ‘form of a servant’, the servant who would come to earth and perform the divine and infinite sacrifice for the sins of man.  And though mortal man was created in the image of God, having a similitude of appearance parallel to the spirit, Christ was ‘fashion as a mortal man’ being ‘made in the likeness of mortal man’ to the extent that he could suffer the pains of mortal death upon the cross, later to be resurrected with an immortal body of flesh and bone.

Philippians 2:5-8  “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:  Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”

Made of a Women: (See Seed of the Woman)

Galatians 4:4  “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,”

870

Made Under the Law:

Galatians 4:4  “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,”

Magnified:

Psalms 40:16  “Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The LORD be magnified.”

872

Majesty on High:

In Hebrews, the apostle Paul uses this title in his reference to God the Father as he write of the relationship between the Father and the Son.

Hebrews 1:3  “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;”

Maker (our, your):

Psalms 95:6  “O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.”

2 Nephi 9:40  “40 O, my beloved brethren, give ear to my words. Remember the greatness of the Holy One of Israel. Do not say that I have spoken hard things against you; for if ye do, ye will revile against the truth; for I have spoken the words of your Maker. I know that the words of truth are hard against all uncleanness; but the righteous fear them not, for they love the truth and are not shaken.”

D&C 30:2  “But you mind has been on the things of the things of the earth more than on

the things of me, your Maker, and the ministry whereunto you have been called; and

you have given heed unto my Spirit, and to those who were set over you, but have

been persuaded by those whom I have not commanded.”

Hymn 94  Come Ye Thankful People’ v1:  “Come, ye thankful people, come; Raise the song of harvest home.  All is safely gathered in Ere the winter storms begin.  God, our Maker, doth provide For our wants to be supplied.  Come to God’s own temple, come; Raise the song of harvest home.”

874

Maker of Heaven, Earth, and Seas:

D&C 121:4  “O Lord God Almighty, maker of heaven, earth, and seas, and of all things that in them are, and who controllest and subjectest the devil, and the dark and benighted dominion of Sheol—stretch forth thy hand; let thine eye pierce; let thy pavilion be taken up; let thy hiding place no longer be covered; let thine ear be inclined; let thine heart be softened, and thy bowels moved with compassion toward us.”

875

Malefactor:

John 18:30  “They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.”

Man:  The name ‘Man’ may be both applied to God the Father and God the Son in a number of respects.  In one very apparent fact, both God the Father and his Son were both men, of the masculine gender.  In another sense, ‘Man’ is of the race of God, which is the race of ‘Man’.  Jesus Christ himself was so named, the ‘Son of Man’, indicating that God was ‘Man’.  And God the father is called ‘Man of Holiness’ further confirming that ‘man’ is of the race of which God is, the race of man.  (See ‘Man of Holiness’)

It is of some interest to further note that the Old Testament name for the first man, Adam, means ‘Man’, ‘Adam’ means ‘Man’.  Thus the first man, Adam, was given one of the names of God, which is ‘Man’, Adam meaning the same as Man.  This pattern is followed throughout scripture as many of God’s people are given various names of God as their given name. (See Adam)

John 19:5  “Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!”

3 Nephi 11:8  “And it came to pass, as they understood they cast their eyes up again towards heaven; and behold, they saw a Man descending out of heaven; and he was clothed in a white robe; and he came down and stood in the midst of them; and the eyes of the whole multitude were turned upon him, and they durst not open their mouths, even one to another, and wist not what it meant, for they thought it was an angel that had appeared unto them.”

877

Man Approved of God:

Acts 2:22  “Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:”

878

Man Child:

Revelation 12:5  “And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.”

879

Man Christ Jesus:

1 Timothy 2:5  “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”

880

Man Descending Out of Heaven:  The image of a man descending out of heaven has reference to Christ coming on earth to dwell in mortality.  It also relates to Christ’s appearance to the Nephites about the temple in Bountiful after his death.  It also relates to Chirst’s appearances to Joseph Smith in the sacred grove and in the Kirtland Temple.  It also relates to the Second Coming of the Savior when he will descend in all of his glory.

1 Nephi 11:7  “And behold this thing shall be given unto thee for a sign, that after thou hast beheld the tree which bore the fruit which thy father tasted, thou shalt also behold a man descending out of heaven, and him shall ye witness; and after ye have witnessed him ye shall bear record that it is the Son of God.”

881

Man from Heaven:

1 Cor. 15:48  “As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.”

882

Man Gluttonous:  Used by his enemies, this title was referred to Christ.  The hypocritical Pharisees and Sadducees faulted Christ as he did not appear to ‘fast’ as they portrayed themselves to do.  But Christ did eat and drink as any other man did.

Matthew 11:19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

883

Man Having a Field:

D&C 88:51  “Behold, I will liken these kingdoms unto a man having a field, and he sent forth his servants into the field to dig in the field.”

884

Man Like Ourselves:

D&C 130:1  “WHEN the Savior shall appear we shall see him as he is. We shall see that he is a man like ourselves.”

885

Man of Counsel:

Moses 7:35  “Behold, I am God; Man of Holiness is my name; Man of Counsel is my

name; and Endless and Eternal is my name, also.”

886

Man of Holiness:  In one sense the ‘Man of Holiness’ is the name of the Father and is the basis of why Jesus Christ, Jehovah, is called the Son of Man.  This is presented by Enoch as he presents his testimony of God’s dealings with Adam and Adam’s posterity.

Moses 6:57-58  “Wherefore teach it unto your children, that all men, everywhere, must

repent, or they can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God, for no unclean thing can

dwell there, or dwell in his presence; for, in the language of Adam, Man of Holiness is

his name, and the name of his Only Begotten is the Son of Man, even Jesus Christ, a

righteous Judge, who shall come in the meridian of time.  Therefore I give unto you a commandment, to teach these things freely unto your children, saying:”

Often is the case from the Jewish perspective that the holy name of God be not used nor spoken.  Then grew out of a fear of ‘taking the Lord’s name in vain’ and likely a familiar reason as why the Catholic Church had prohibited the reading of the scriptures by the common man.  It was a way for the ‘hierarchal leadership’ to maintain their control over the people.  But we are told but to speak God’s names in reverence and in sincerity.  We are not take them in vain, which is the act of the hypocrite which preaches one thing and does another.  Acts of praying to be seen of men rather than to be heard of God, and repenting falsely are ways in which God’s name is taken in vain.  But to speak of him in sincerity and faith is not.  And we are ‘commanded’ to speak and teach of God.

Moses 7:35  “Behold, I am God; Man of Holiness is my name; Man of Counsel is my name; and Endless and Eternal is my name, also.”

Though we know that it is Jehovah speaking as God the Father, as it is only Jehovah who ministers unto this earth, we must also understand that Jehovah is Jesus Christ by virtue of the divine anointing of divine investiture had taken upon himself the very names of God.  Thus, while the title ‘Man of Holiness’ references the Father in terms of God the Father being the Father of the Son, the ‘Son of Man’, it is also appropriate to call the great Jehovah by one of the names of the Father, being that is has been so bestowed upon Jehovah to act as, for and in behalf of the Father, as being the ‘Man of Holiness’ also.  Thus many of the names of God can be and do have reference to the Father and to the Son and can be used interchangeably between the two.

887

Man Whose Name is the Branch:

Zechariah 6:12  “And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:”

888

Man of Sorrows:

Isaiah 53:3  “He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.”

889

Man Whom He Hath Ordained:

Acts 17:31  “Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.”

890

Manna:

Exodus 16:15  “And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat.”

John 6:41  “The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.”

891

Marvelous in Our Eyes:  (See also Wonderful)

Matthew 21:42  “Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?”

892

Mashiah:

From the just previous cited reference: “The Messiah is called by seven names and they are: Yinnon, Tzidqenu [“Our Justice”], Tezmah [‘Shoot’], Menahem [‘Comforter’], David, Shiloh, and Elijah.” (Mid. Mishle. ed. Buber , p. 87). And another such list from that same source states that the Messiah is called by eight names:  Yinnon, Tezmah, Pele [“Miracle”], Yo’etz [“Counselor”], Mashiah [“Messiah”], El [“God”], Gibbor [“Hero”], and Avi’Ad Shalom [“Eternal Father of Peace”].” (Mid. Mishle. ed. Buber , p. 87 S. Buber’s note)  (See ‘The Messiah Texts’ pages 20-22)

893

Mashiyach:  (Strong’s number 4886) Mashiyach (maw-shee’-akh) is another form of the word Messiah.  It means ‘anointed’ or ‘the anointed one’.  This is usually a consecrated person such as a king, priest, or saint and specifically it has reference to the Messiah. (See Messiah)

894

Master (your):

John 1:38  “Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?”

Various ‘sects’ or ‘schools’ of Judaism are often known by which ‘Rabbi’ and that Rabbi’s line of teaching and reasoning.  Thus the term ‘Master’ is in reference to the ‘teacher’ – ‘leader’ of a group of followers.  It is and was common that the followers of such a ‘Master’ teacher or Rabbi would so select that Rabbi which they by their own choice and reasoning selected to follow, much like the various sects of Christianity and the followers of various schools of Christian thought and religion.  The difference being that in the Jewish culture, being of a differing sect or line of thought and reasoning did not require a different ‘church’ or building in which to worship.  Thus the synagogue of the Jewish faith was often shared by various Jews of differing sects and schools of thought and often one such synagogue of a populous region might even have more than one Rabbi which would attend and be recognized by the people of the congregation as their particular favored Rabbi.  Thus it was nothing out of the ordinary that the Rabbi Jesus Christ did attend the local synagogue of his hometown, all Jews being welcomed to the synagogue together regardless of sect or Rabbinical school of thought.

It is also quite significant  that while it was the common status quo for the followers of a particular Rabbi to have selected him, the Savior in the instance of the 12 apostles stated, ‘Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you and ordained you.’

Matthew 9:11  “And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?”

Matthew 17:24  “¶ And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?”

Matthew 23:8  “8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.”

Matthew 23:10  “Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.”

Matthew 26:18  “And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.

Mark 5:35  “While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?”

Luke 8:49  “¶ While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.

John 11:28  “And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

John 13:13-15  “Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.  For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.”

John 20:16  “Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.”

Colossians  4:1  “MASTERS, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.”

895

Master of the Vineyard:

Jacob 5:4  “And it came to pass that the master of the vineyard went forth, and he saw that his olive-tree began to decay; and he said: I will prune it, and dig about it, and nourish it, that perhaps it may shoot forth young and tender branches, and it perish not.”

896

Mediation of My Heart:

Psalms 49:3  “My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.”

897

Mediator: (one, great)

2 Nephi 2:27-28  “Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself.  And now, my sons, I would that ye should look to the great Mediator, and hearken unto his great commandments; and be faithful unto his words, and choose eternal life, according to the will of his Holy Spirit;

1 Timothy 2:5  “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”

898

Mediator Between God and Men:

1 Timothy 2:5  “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”

899

Mediator of a Better Covenant:  (See also Messenger of the Covenant)

Hebrews 8:6  “But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.”

900

Mediator of the New Covenant:  (See also Messenger of the Covenant)

Hebrews 12:24  “And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.”

D&C 76:69  “These are they who are just men made perfect through Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, who wrought out this perfect atonement through the shedding of his own blood.”

901

Mediator of the New Testament:  (See also Messenger of the Covenant and Mediator of the New Covenant)

Hebrews 9:15  “And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.”

902

Meek:

Matthew 11:29  “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

903

Melchizedek:  Melchizedek means ‘King of Righteousness’.  Though there is the great high priest of Abraham’s day who was named Melchizedek, the name ‘King of Righteousness’ is the name of God, Jehovah.  Melchizedek is therefore another example of God bestowing upon a man one of the names of God.  It is ironic that we use the name Melchizedek as the common name of the high priesthood of God in the church today.  We tend to think of it as using a name of man in order to avoid the too frequent name of the Son of God, but in fact we are still calling the priesthood of God by one of the names of God, ‘Melchizedek’, the ‘King of Righteousness’.

(King of Righteousness)

(THE PROMISED MESSIAH, p. 449)

            2. Melchizedek is named as a type of Christ. Our revelations tell us he was known as the Prince of Peace, the King of Peace, the King of Heaven, and the King of Righteousness, all of which are the very name-titles that apply to our Lord.

When one comprehends that the man ‘Melchizedek’ was named ‘because’ or ‘for’ his being a ‘type of Christ’, then it gives new perspectives to the Joseph Smith Translation of Hebrew 7:1-3 which states:

Genesis 14:18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

Now according to John Taylor and Jewish traditions, the man Melchizedek is identified as being Shem, the son of Noah.  Yet according to others, they interpret certain scriptural verses in such a manner as to place so ‘generations’ between Noah and Melchizedek.  The importance of knowing for certain the exact identity and genealogy of the man Melchizedek is however dwarfed by his degree of righteousness.  Further insights into Melchizedek can be obtained in the JST (Genesis 14:26-35)  and Book of Mormon (Alma 13:14-19)

(See also: King of Righteousness)

904

Menahem:  Menahem means ‘Comforter’.  It is one of the names Rabbinical writers give as the names of the Messiah (Lamentations Rabba 1:51 page 36, ad Lamentations 1:16; also see Y. Ber. 5a/The Messiah Texts page 20).

Lamentations 1:16  “For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter  (Menahem/Menachem) that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.”

“The Messiah is called by seven names and they are: Yinnon, Tzidqenu [“Our Justice”], Tezmah [‘Shoot’], Menahem [‘Comforter’], David, Shiloh, and Elijah.” (Mid. Mishle. ed. Buber , p.

The root word of Menahem is used frequently in the Old Testament and as we understand, one of the names and roles of Christ is ‘Comforter’.  Christ is one of two ‘Comforters’ identified in scripture.  The Holy Ghost being the other Comforter (See: Comforter).  The type of comfort which seems to be implied by the root word of Menahem, is that associated with sorrow for sin and the process of repentance.

One of the kings of Israel was named Menahem (See: 2 Kings 15:14-23).

Lectures on Faith 3:14  Secondly, that he is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, abundant in goodness, and that he was so from everlasting, and will be to everlasting.”

Exodus 34:5-6  “And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD.  And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,”

2 Chronicles 30:9  “For if ye aturn again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children shall find compassion before them that lead them captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if ye return unto him.”

Nehamiah 9:17  “And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to danger, and of great ekindness, and forsookest them not.

Nehamiah 9:31 “Nevertheless for thy great mercies’ sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God.

Jonah 4:2  “And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.”

1 Nephi 13:33  “Wherefore saith the Lamb of God: I will be merciful unto the Gentiles, unto the visiting of the remnant of the house of Israel in great judgment.”

2 Nephi 1:3  “And he also spake unto them concerning the land of promise, which they had obtained—how merciful the Lord had been in warning us that we should flee out of the land of Jerusalem.”

Alma 32:22  “And now, behold, I say unto you, and I would that ye should remember, that God is merciful unto all who believe on his name; therefore he desireth, in the first place, that ye should believe, yea, even on his word.”

906

Merciful and Faithful High Priest:

Hebrews 2:17  “Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.”

907

Merciful Arm:

Alma 29:10  “And behold, when I see many of my brethren truly penitent, and coming to the Lord their God, then is my soul filled with joy; then do I remember what the Lord has done for me, yea, even that he hath heard my prayer; yea, then do I remember his merciful arm which he extended towards me.”

908

Merciful Being:

Alma 26:35  “Now have we not reason to rejoice? Yea, I say unto you, there never were men that had so great reason to rejoice as we, since the world began; yea, and my joy is carried away, even unto boasting in my God; for he has all power, all wisdom, and all understanding; he comprehendeth all things, and he is a merciful Being, even unto salvation, to those who will repent and believe on his name.”

909

Merciful God:

Deuteronomy 4:31  “(For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.”

Nehamiah 9:31  “31 Nevertheless for thy great mercies’ sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God.”

Alma 42:15  “15 And now, the plan of mercy could not be brought about except an atonement should be made; therefore God himself atoneth for the sins of the world, to bring about the plan of mercy, to appease the demands of justice, that God might be a perfect, just God, and a merciful God also.”

Merciful High Priest:

Hebrews 2:17  “Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.”

912

Merciful Man:

Proverbs 11:17  “The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is acruel troubleth his own flesh.”

913

Mercy:  Mercy is the fifth attribute of God as set out in the Lectures on Faith.

Lectures on Faith 4:9  FifthlyMercy. Psalm 89:14: "Mercy and truth shall go before thy face." Exodus 34:6: "And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious." Nehemiah 9:17: "But thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful."”

Psalms 57:3  “He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.”

Isaiah 55:3  “Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.”

Acts 13:34  “And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.”

The mercy which Christ extends has also been referenced in scripture as the ‘mercies of David’ as one of the God names of Jehovah is David, meaning the Beloved (See also David and King David).

914

Mercy and His Truth:  (See Mercy and Truth separately)

Psalms 57:3  “He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.”

915

Mercy of God:

D&C 1:29  “And after having received the record of the Nephites, yea, even my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., might have power to translate through the mercy of God, by the power of God, the Book of Mormon.”

916

Mercy Seat:

Exodus 25:22  “And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.”

Leviticus 16:2  “And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the bvail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.”

Numbers 7:89  “And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spake unto him.”

1 Samuel 4:4  “So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.”

Exodus 30:6  “And thou shalt put it before the vail that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with thee.”

Leviticus 16:14-16  “And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.

“¶ Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat:  And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.”

That the the blood offering of the ‘bullock’ (of Ephraim) and the goat (scapegoat) offering which takes upon the Lord for the sins of his people, the children of Israel, is clearly set for and is to be understood by these sacrifical ordinances of the Law of Moses.  In this, as in all things of the Law of Moses, they clearly point to a similitude of the atonement performed by the Son of God, Jesus Christ, as set out in the New Testament.  And it is upon the Lord’s ‘Mecy Seat’ that the blood is sprinkled, further implying that it is by the mercy of God that this atonement is placed into effect.

Mekaddisheem (mqdsh-km): The Lord Who Sanctifies - One Hallowing of You.

Though the atonement of Jesus Christ we may be saved and by his suffering for our sins and the shedding of his blood we are able to be saved and sanctified by comeing unto him and obeying his word.

M E S S E N G E R

We do not commonly consider Jesus Christ as a ‘messenger’, for we teach that John the Baptist and Elijah are the messengers sent forth to prepare the way before Christ.  But the scriptures do teach us that Christ himself is a ‘messenger servant’ in that he is God the Father’s messenger who brings salvation and of the covenant promise made by God the Father to his children before the foundation of the world.

In this sense, Jesus Christ is also an ‘Elias’ (See Elias), and is also referred to in scripture as being ‘Elijah’ (See Elijah).  When one comes to understand that Christ also acts in the ‘office’ of an Elias and that Elias is one of the names of God and that Christ is also called by the name of Elijah which means ‘Jehovah is my God’, one of the names of God himself given to men, then a futher and richer understanding of God can be obtained.

917

Messenger Before My Face:  The events of Christ’s mortal coming and mission wherein the performance of the atonement was accomplished was in preparation for the Lord’s Second Coming and His Millennial Reign wherein the bulk of the Lord’s work will be done in the saving ordinances for all mankind who has ever lived.  When we consider that but a minute, that is very small, fraction of all humanity who has ever lived has come into contact with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we can begin to appreciate the sizable task it will be to bring to pass during the Millennial period the performance of the saving ordinance work for all of humanity, that is all of God’s children who have ever lived.  In this context, the Savior’s mortal mission and even the latter-day restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, are but precursors, forerunners or messengers sent before in preparation for that grand Second Coming, Reign, Ministry and Work of the Millennial day.  Thus Jesus Christ himself is the messenger to come before the face of the Day of the Lord.  He is the Messenger of Salvation, the Messenger of the Covenant, the Messenger of the Gospel, a Forerunner acting in the office of an Elias in preparation for that great Millennial Era and Performance for the Salvation of Man.

D&C 45:9   “And even so I have sent mine everlasting covenant into the world, to be a light to the world, and to be a standard for my people, and for the Gentiles to seek to it, and to be a messenger before my face to prepare the way before me.”

918

Messenger of Salvation:

D&C 93:8  “Therefore, in the beginning the Word was, for he was the Word, even the messenger of salvation—“

919

Messenger of the Covenant:  Christ performs in all the callings and offices of the Priesthood of God.  He is a Prophet.  He functions at times as an angel, or the Angel of the Lord.  And he also performs in the calling and office of an Elias (See Elias).  An Elias is a messenger and/or forerunner.  As the ‘Messenger of the Covenant’, Christ performs in the office of an Elias.  (See also Messenger of theGospel)

Malachi 3:1  “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.”

3 Nephi 24:1  “AND it came to pass that he commanded them that they should write the words which the Father had given unto Malachi, which he should tell unto them.

920

Messenger of the Gospel:  The ‘New and Everlasting Covenant’ is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  It fulfilled the Law of Moses, the Law of Sacrifice.  And Christ was its messenger who brought the Gospel unto the world.  (See Messenger of the Covenant & Messenger of Salvation)

Messiah:

Moses 7:53  “And the Lord said: Blessed is he through whose seed Messiah shall come; for he saith I am Messiah, the King of Zion, the Rock of Heaven, which is broad as eternity; whose cometh in at the gate and climbeth up by me shall never fall; wherefore, blessed are they of whom I have spoken, for they shall come forth with songs of everlasting joy.”

1 Nephi 1:19  “And it came to pass that the Jews did mock him because of the things which he testified of them; for he truly testified of their wickedness and their abominations; and he testified that the things which he saw and heard, and also the things which he read in the book, manifested plainly of the coming of a Messiah, and also the redemption of the world.”

1 Nephi 10:4-5  “Yea, even six hundred years from the time that my father left Jerusalem, a prophet would the Lord God raise up among the Jews—even a Messiah, or, in other words, a Savior of the world.  And he also spake concerning the prophets, how great a number had testified of these things, concerning this Messiah, of whom he had spoken, or this Redeemer of the world.”

1 Nephi 10:10  “And after he had baptized the Messiah with water, he should behold and bear record that he had baptized the Lamb of God, who should take away the sins of the world.”

1 Nephi 10:17  “And it came to pass after I, Nephi, having heard all the words of my father, concerning the things which he saw in a vision, and also the things which he spake by the power of the Holy Ghost, which power he received by faith on the Son of God—and the Son of God was the Messiah who should come—I, Nephi, was desirous also that I might see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost, which is the gift of God unto all those who diligently seek him, as well in times of old as in the time that he should manifest himself unto the children of men.”

II Thessalonians

Daniel 9:25-26  “25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.  And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war

desolations are determined.”

John 4:25-26  “The woman saith unto him, I know that the Messiah cometh, who is called Christ; when he is come, he will tell us all things, Jesus saith unto her, “I that speak unto thee am he.”

922

Messiah ben David:  Christ was the ‘Son of David’, the rightful descendant of the throne of David.  The Jews have always maintained that the Messiah would be the son of the House of David, as David was promised that he would come of his seed.  ‘Ben’ means ‘son of’, thus ‘Messiah ben David’ means ‘Messiah son of David’.  When the Jews speak of the coming of the Messiah in the latter days, they speak of Messiah ben David.  And they speak of his glorious coming and that he will deliver his people, the Jews.

923

Messiah ben Joseph:  Because the scriptures speak of the ‘suffering servant’ who will be raised up and die for his people, the Rabbinical Jews have postulated or imagined a second Messiah.  The reject the idea of the one Messiah coming twice, once in the meridian of time to work the atoning sacrifice for sin and the Fall of Adam, and then again a second time in the latter days to come to earth in glory and reign personally during the Millennium.

This second Messiah they assign to being the promised Messiah ‘son of ‘ Joseph.  There are a number of scriptural and traditional evidences, which point to the ‘True Messiah’ being the legal and rightful seed of the House of Joseph.   In a text entitled ‘Messiah ben David ~ Messiah ben Joseph’, this author has set forth a lengthy discussion of many of these ‘evidences that the ‘Messiah’ would be a descendant of both the houses of Judah and of Joseph. The house of Judah by the blood of Boaz as the surrogate father by Ruth of her first born son Obed, the ancestor of David and Jesus Christ, and he would legally and rightfully be of the house of Joseph by way of Ephraim for Christ was rightfully an Ephrathite of the house of Mahlon and his father Elimelech, Malhon being the first husband of Ruth and Obed being raised as the seed of the dead to legally be of the house of Mahlon under God’s law of the Law of Moses (see Ruth chapter 4 and Deuteronomy 25:5-10).

924

Messiah ben Ephraim:  In speaking of the ‘second Messiah’ of the house of Joseph, the Jewish Rabbis will further set forth that this ‘Messiah ben Joseph’ will be a descendant of Ephraim, Joseph son of the covenant blessings of Jacob (See this author’s Commentary on Genesis 48).  Thus Messiah ben Joseph is often also referenced as being Messiah ben Ephraim.  The many evidences which support that ‘the one and true Messiah’ is legally and rightfully of the house of Ephraim is presented at some length by this author in his text entitled ‘Messiah ben David ~ Messiah ben Joseph’.

925

Messiah the Prince:

Daniel 9:25  “Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.”

926

Messias:  ‘Messias’ is a New Testament form of the same name of ‘Messiah’.

John 1:41  “He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.”

John 4:25  “The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.”

927

Might:

D&C 84:102  “Glory, and honor, and power, and might, Be ascribed to our God; for he

is full of mercy, Justice, grace and truth, and peace, Forever and ever, Amen.”

928

Mighty:

Psalms 89:19  “Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.”

D&C 85:7  “And it shall come to pass that I, the Lord God, will send one mighty and strong, holding the scepter of power in his hand, clothed with light for a covering, whose mouth shall utter words, eternal words; while his bowels shall be a fountain of truth, to set in order the house of God, and to arrange by lot the inheritances of the saints whose names are found, and the names of their fathers, and of their children, enrolled in the book of the law of God;”

D&C 65:1  “Hearken, and lo, a voice as of one sent down from on high, who is mighty

and powerful, whose going forth is unto the ends of the earth, yea, whose voice is unto

men--Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”

929

Mighty Arm:  Who or what is the ‘Mighty Arm’ of our Heavenly Father?

D&C 123:6  “That we may not only publish to all the world, but present them to the heads of government in all their dark and hellish hue, as the last effort which is enjoined on us by our Heavenly Father, before we can fully and completely claim that promise which shall call him forth from his hiding place; and also that the whole nation may be left without excuse before he can send forth the power of his mighty arm.”

930

Mighty Bridegroom:

Hymn 39 O Saints of Zion : 1  “O Saints of Zion, hear the voice Of Him from courts on high.  Prepare the pathway of the Lord; His reign on earth is nigh.  Prepare the supper of the Lamb; Invite the world to dine.  Behold, the mighty Bridegroom comes In majesty divine.”

D&C 58:8-11  “And also that a feast of fat things might be prepared for the poor; yea, a feast of fat things, of wine on the lees well refined, that the earth may know that the mouths of the prophets shall not fail; Yea, a supper of the house of the Lord, well prepared, unto which all nations shall be invited. First, the rich and the learned, the wise and the noble; And after that cometh the day of my power; then shall the poor, the lame, and the blind, and the deaf, come in unto the marriage of the Lamb, and partake of the supper of the Lord, prepared for the great day to come.”

931

Mighty Fortress:

Hymn 68 ‘A Mighty Fortress Is Our God  v1:  “A mighty fortress is our God, A tower of strength ne’er failing.  A helper mighty is our God, O’verills of life prevailing.  He over cometh all.  He saveth from the Fall.  His might and pow’r are great.  He all things did create.  And he shall reign forevermore.”

932

Mighty God:

Psalms 50:1  “THE mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.”

Isaiah 9:6  12  “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

2 Nephi 19:6  “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Hymn 55:  Lo, the  Might God Appearing!  v1  “Lo, the mighty God appearing!  From on high Jehovah speaks!  Eastern lands the summons hearing, O’ver the west his thunder breaks.  Earth behold him!  Earth behold him!  Universal nature shakes.  Earth behold him!  Universal nature shakes.”

933

Mighty One of Israel:

1 Nephi 22:12  “12 Wherefore, he will bring them again out of captivity, and they shall be gathered together to the lands of their inheritance; and they shall be brought out of obscurity and out of darkness; and they shall know that the Lord is their Savior and their Redeemer, the Mighty One of Israel.”

D&C 36:1  “Thus saith the Lord God, the Mighty One of Israel: Behold, I say unto you,

my servant Edward, that you are blessed, and your sins are forgiven you, and you are

called to preach my gospel as with the voice of a trump;”

934

Mighty One of Jacob:

Isaiah 49:26 And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.

1 Nephi 21:26  “And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; they shall be drunken with their own blood as with sweet wine; and all flesh shall know that I, the Lord, am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Isaiah 60:16  “Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the breast of kings: and thou shalt know that I the LORD am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.”

935

Mighty Works of God:

D&C 88:108-109  “And then shall the first angel again sound his trump in the ears of all living, and reveal the secret acts of men, and the mighty works of God in the first thousand years.  And then shall the second angel sound his trump, and reveal the secret acts of men, and the thoughts and intents of their hearts, and the mighty works of God in the second thousand years—”

Mind (same):

Lectures on Faith  5:2  “ . . . he being the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth, and having overcome, received a fullness of the glory of the Father, possessing the same mind with the Father, which mind is the Holy Spirit, that bears record of the Father and the Son, and these three are one; or, in other words, these three constitute the great, matchless, governing and supreme, power over all things; by whom all things were created and made that were created and made, and these three constitute the Godhead, and are one; the Father and the Son possessing the same mind, the same wisdom, glory, power, and fullness—filling all in all; the Son being filled with the fullness of the mind, glory, and power; or, in other words, the spirit, glory, and power, of the Father, . . . “

Romans 8:27  “And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

Romans 11:34  “For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?”

Romans 12:2  “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

1 Corinthians 1:10  “10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.”

1 Corinthians 2:16  “For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.”

2 Corinthians 13:11  “Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.”

Ephesians 4:23  “And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;”

Philippians 1:27  “Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;”

Philippians 2:2  “Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.”

2 Timothy 1:7  “7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

God’s spirit is not to invoke fear, but it is given that by our faith we will have power by our love for God in becoming of ‘sound mind’ that is to be of the mind of God, becoming one with him, not fearing him but loving and understanding him and striving to be like him is all things.

1 Peter 3:8  “Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:”

Being of ‘one mind’ with God is to have a working knowledge of placing the traits, attributes and perfections of God into our own lives.  We have an understanding of compassion and mercy from our knowledge of God.  We then put into action that knowledge by the exercise of our faith by showing forth compassion and mercy in our own lives, loving our brethren, having pity toward the unfortunate doing what we can for them and in being courteous one unto another.  In this way our being of ‘one mind with God’ translates into us putting on ourselves the very image and likeness of God in becoming as God is.

1 Peter 4:1  “FORASMUCH then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;”

As we become of the ‘same mind’ as Christ, we are ‘arming’ ourselves against being carnally minded.  Shaping and forming of the mind is critical, for as a man thinketh, so is he.  Thus we must yield our mind to the knowledge and will of God, that we might become one with him in mind an knowledge.  We are and need to be working out our salvation here.  We need to be advancing our minds toward being even as God is here if we ever expect to be as God is ‘there’.

2 Nephi 9:39  “O, my beloved brethren, remember the awfulness in transgressing against that Holy God, and also the awfulness of yielding to the enticings of that cunning one. Remember, to be carnally-minded is death, and to be spiritually-minded is life eternal.”

The Holy Ghost is the linking source between our mind and the mind of God.  That is his primary function.  As we yield unto the enlightenment of the Spirit, we are in the process of becoming ‘spiritually minded’ and of the mind of God, one in thought and knowledge.  And becoming as God is, is to obtain eternal life or life eternal.

Alma 32:34  “And now, behold, is your knowledge perfect? Yea, your knowledge is perfect in that thing, and your faith is dormant; and this because you know, for ye know that the word hath swelled your souls, and ye also know that it hath sprouted up, that your understanding doth begin to be enlightened, and your mind doth begin to expand.”

Now the process of the Holy Ghost enlightening the mind of man and bring it unto the understanding of God is not a magical overnight performance.  We can begin to take our minds closer to God step by step, line upon line, precept upon precept. Each new level of understanding becoming the foundation for the next level of revealed expanded intelligence.  And whatsoever additional intelligence of God that we can obtain to here, so much the more is our advantage in the world to come as we advance to becoming as God is.  Thus the ‘experiment of Alma’ of planting ‘one seed’ and having it grow into knowledge is just a ‘first step’ and each line and precept we gain can so advance here a little and there a little as our minds and understanding begin to grow and develop and become even as God’s is.

D&C 11:13  “Verily, verily, I say unto you, I will impart unto you of my Spirit, which shall enlighten your mind, which shall fill your soul with joy;”

The primary function of the Holy Ghost, the Spirit, is to enlighten the minds of men and to bring them into harmony with God to the end of man’s salvation and exaltation, wherein man might of joy in becoming even as God is.  The guidance in the administration of the priesthood, revelation, the gifts of the spirit, the personal enlightenment of the minds of men all have as it bottom line objective to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man, that is to bring them into harmony and oneness with God, that man may become even as God is.

D&C 68:4  “And whatsoever they shall speak when moved upon by the Holy Ghost shall be scripture, shall be the will of the Lord, shall be the mind of the Lord, shall be the word of the Lord, shall be the voice of the Lord, and the power of God unto salvation.”

Even the process of going from mind to speech and action comes of the Holy Ghost, as that which is converted through the mind into speech is the will and the mind of the Lord, the word and the voice of the Lord.  And as in all things with Christ and his mission, it is unto the power of God unto salvation.  This is his work and his glory. Jehovah is Salvation, Yehoshua even Jesus.

D&C 88:68  “Therefore, sanctify yourselves that your minds become single to God, and the days will come that you shall see him; for he will unveil his face unto you, and it shall be in his own time, and in his own way, and according to his own will.”

We learn through scriptures that the process of ‘sanctification’ is a function of the Holy Ghost.  It is he who conveys the might change in the hearts of men, sanctifying them in mind and in spirit, bringing them into agreement with God and a singleness of mind with Him.

D&C 102:23  “In case of difficulty respecting doctrine or principle, if there is not a sufficiency written to make the case clear to the minds of the council, the president may inquire and obtain the mind of the Lord by revelation.”

Though the preceding is obtaining the ‘mind of the Lord’ upon a single matter, it is the same manner and principle by which our mind becomes of the ‘mind of the Lord’.  Revelation is delivered by the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of God or of the Lord.  The Holy Ghost reveals what the mind of the Lord is to our minds as our minds obtain it and become one in thought and ‘mind’ upon each matter.  Thus we can grow from ‘grace’ to ‘grace’, line upon line, precept upon precept as our mind is conformed to the mind and will of God, becoming one in thought and process in respect to the critical matters of salvation, exaltation and eternal progression and knowledge and wisdom and understanding.

937

Mine Anointed:

Psalms 132:17  “There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.”

938

Minister:

D&C 130:5

939

Minister of Sin:

Galatians 2:17  “But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.”

940

Minister of the Circumcision:

Romans 15:8  “Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:”

941

Minister of the Sanctuary:

Hebrews 8:1-3  “Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.”

Ministering God: See Ministering Spirit next.

Ministering Spirit:

Hebrews 1:13-14  “But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?.”

Now considering that Jehovah is the Firstborn and our Elder Brother, he is one of the spirit children of God even as we are. And all these are but called angels of God. And those of us, including Jehovah, who is the same as Jesus Chrsit, who are called upon to minister salvation are but also refered to as 'ministering spirits', and this includes He who is the Chief and Eldest amongst us. He being a 'Ministering Spirit' also, and more particular He who was chosen of the Father to be our 'Ministering God' unto this Second Estate. And as such he too is so considered as one pertaining to this earth, and thus it was that he could so minister unto it. And so also it is why the Father so chose him to be and act in the stead of the Father in all things pertaining unto this Second Estate. For it is also said as follows:

D&C 130:5  “I answer, Yes. But there are no angels who minister to this earth but those who do belong or have belonged to it.”

942

More Intelligent than They All:

Abraham 3:19  “19 And the Lord said unto me: These two facts do exist, that there are two spirits, one being more intelligent than the other; there shall be another more intelligent than they; I am the Lord thy God, I am more intelligent than they all.”

943

More Excellent Name:

Hebrews 1:4  “Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.”

944

Morning Star:

Revelation 2:28  “And I will give him the morning star.”

Revelations 22:16  “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.”

945

Moses/Moshe/Mosheh: Variant forms meaning from 'drawin out' to 'saving' or 'deliver of' to 'Saviour'. In its lesser form it is that name by which Moses was called. And though Jesus was recorded as that prophet to come who would be 'like unto Moses'. It was Moses who was like unto or a type of the Savior or Messiah to come. Jesus/Jehovah being that particular Moshe or Savior who was the 'anointed Savior' of all mankind; Moses being only that deliver of the Children of Israel from the Egyptian bondage.

946

Moshiach:  Moshiach is another of the many alternative spellings and pronunciations of the Hebrew words all meaning Messiah, the ‘anointed one’.  (See Messiah)

947

Moshiach ben David:  This is one of the alternative spellings and pronunciations in Hebrew of Messiah ben David (See Messiah ben David).

948

Moshiach ben Ephrayim:  This is one of the alternative spellings and pronunciations in Hebrew of Messiah ben Ephraim (See Messiah ben Ephraim and Messiah ben Joseph).

949

Moshiach ben Yossef:  This is one of the alternative spellings and pronunciations in Hebrew of Messiah ben Joseph (See Messiah ben Joseph).  The common consideration of many Jews, as taught them by their Rabbis, is that there are two Messiahs, Messiah ben David and Messiah ben Joseph, one descended from Judah and the House of David and the other descended from Joseph of Egypt and his son Ephraim.  The do not as easily dismiss the fact that Eprhaim obtained the firstborn blessing from Jacob and as part of the covenant would have a Messiah descend from him.

950

Most Gracious Lord:

Hymn 98 ‘I Need Thee Every Hour’ v1:  “I need thee every hour, Most gracious Lord.  No tender voice like thine Can peace afford.  I need thee, oh, I need thee; Every hour I need thee!  Oh, bless me now, my Savior; I come to thee!”

951

Most High (as applied – Father God):  As a title of God the Father and in that Christ is the Father’s representative who assumes the role of the Father by divine investiture, this title may also be used in reference to Jehovah, who is the Chirst, as he has received of the fullness of the Father. (See Also Highest)

Psalms 9:2  “I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High.”

Psalms 91:1  “HE that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

Isaiah 14:14  “I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.”

2 Nephi 24:14  “I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High.”

D&C 59:10  “For verily this is a day appointed unto you to rest from your labors, and to

pay thy devotions unto the Most High.”

D&C 88:120  “That your incomings may be in the name of the Lord; that your outgoings may be in the name of the Lord; that all your salutations may be in the name of the Lord, with uplifted hands unto the Most High.”

952

Most High God:  The ‘most high God’ is one of the name titles which does apply to God the Father as is obvious by this first scriptural reference.

1 Nephi 11:6  “And when I had spoken these words, the Spirit cried with a loud voice, saying: Hosanna to the Lord, the most high God; for he is God over all the earth, yea, even above all. And blessed art thou, Nephi, because thou believest in the Son of the most high God; wherefore, thou shalt behold the things which thou hast desired.”

However, this same name can be in reference to Jehovah, the Son, when he, by the ‘divine investiture’ power of attorney, is acting in the capacity of, for and in behalf of the Father.  When Christ performs as the Father, all the names of the Father can and do refer to him in such capacity.  (See also Eternal Father and Everlasting God)

When Abraham went to Melchizedek, we should not assume the sectarian assumption that Melchizedek did merely feed Abraham a meal when it state that Melchizedek brought forth bread and wine, he being the priest of the Most High God.  Melchizedek held the ‘High Priesthood’ and was the bearer of all the ordinances of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which includes that ordinance of the Sacrament.  Just as the Nephites did also so minister in such ordinances before the coming of Christ, having the higher priesthood of Melchizedek among them of the Gospel of Jesus Christ (Alma 13), so did the King of Salem.  And he administered such sacrament to Abraham, who was also of the higher order of God, the Gospel and the Priesthood of God.  The lesser law of the Old Testament was not brought into being until the time of Moses when the Lord gave the lesser law to Israel from Mount Sinai.

Genesis 14:18-19  “And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.  And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:”

And it was to this same Melchizedek that Abraham kept the higher law of sacrifice, in that he did pay his tithes of that higher gospel law to.

Hebrews 7:1-2  “FOR this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;

Alma 26:14   “Yea, we have reason to praise him forever, for he is the Most High God, and has loosed our brethren from the chains of hell.”

D&C 36:3  “And you shall declare it with a loud voice, saying: Hosanna, blessed be the name of the most high God.”

D&C 39:19  “Wherefore, go forth, crying with a loud voice, saying: The kingdom of

heaven is at hand; crying: Hosanna! blessed be the name of the Most High God.”

953

Most Holy:

Daniel 9:24  “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.”

954

Mouth of God:

Matthew 4:4  “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

955

Mouth of the Lord:

D&C 90:20-21  “And let mine aged servant, Joseph Smith, Sen., continue with his family upon the place where he now lives; and let it not be sold until the mouth of the Lord shall name.  And let my counselor, even Sidney Rigdon, remain where he now resides until the mouth of the Lord shall name.”

956

Mouth Shall Utter . . . Eternal Words:  By the power of the words of his mouth shall the Lord Jehovah as Jesus Christ rule. (See Rod of Iron, Word of God, etc)

D&C 85:7  “And it shall come to pass that I, the Lord God, will send one mighty and

strong, holding the scepter of power in his hand, clothed with light for a covering,

whose mouth shall utter words, eternal words; while his bowels shall be a fountain of

truth, to set in order the house of God, and to arrange by lot the inheritances of the

saints whose names are found, and the names of their fathers, and of their children,

enrolled in the book of the law of God;”

957

My Wisdom Excelleth them All:  The glory of God is intelligence and wisdom is the exercise of that intelligence.  Having one’s own agency and always making the right informed choices, is the proper exercise of that agency in the wisdom of intelligence.  Regardless of a person’s messured I.Q., if one persists in not being lead nor acts according to the spirit of truth, what profit a man?  He has not exercised making right choices under the influence of the light and truth of God.  Thus a poor and unlearned farmer or farm boy like Joseph Smith exhibits greater intelligence and wisdom than all the learned men of the world as the he adheres to the promptings and guidance of the spririt of truth, the spirit of God’ in all that he does.  And those great men of learning and science and learning who think themselves to know of themselves without God’s guidance of the spirit are but fools of ignorant performance.

Abraham 3:21  “I dwell in the midst of them all; I now, therefore, have come down unto thee to declare unto thee the works which my hands have made, wherein my wisdom excelleth them all, for I rule in the heavens above, and in the earth beneath, in all wisdom and prudence, over all the intelligences thine eyes have seen from the beginning; I came down in the beginning in the midst of all the intelligences thou hast seen.”

958

My Doctrine:  Christ being called the ‘Word’ and presenting to the world the ‘Word of God’ as the Gospel of Christ becomes synonymous with the ‘Word’ being the ‘Doctrine’ of Christ.  Thus Christ’s word is his doctrine, the doctrine of the Gospel which gives life and light to the world unto salvation.

Deuteronomy 32:1-6  “GIVE ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.  My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:  Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.  He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.  They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.  Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?”

John 7:16  “Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.”

3 Nephi 11:31  “Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, I will declare unto you my doctrine.”

3 Nephi 11:40  “And whoso shall declare more or less than this, and establish it for my doctrine, the same cometh of evil, and is not built upon my rock; but he buildeth upon a sandy foundation, and the gates of hell stand open to receive such when the floods come and the winds beat upon them.”

959

My Grace Shall Attend You:

D&C 88:78  “Teach ye diligently and my grace shall attend you, that you may be instructed more perfectly in theory, in principle, in doctrine, in the law of the gospel, in all things that pertain unto the kingdom of God, that are expedient for you to understand;”

960

My Spirit Is Truth:

D&C 88:66  “Behold, that which you hear is as the voice of one crying in the wilderness—in the wilderness, because you cannot see him—my voice, because my voice is Spirit; my Spirit is truth; truth abideth and hath no end; and if it be in you it shall abound.”

961

My Voice Is Spirit:

D&C 88:66  “Behold, that which you hear is as the voice of one crying in the wilderness—in the wilderness, because you cannot see him—my voice, because my voice is Spirit; my Spirit is truth; truth abideth and hath no end; and if it be in you it shall abound.”

962

Mystery of Christ:  Within the Lectures on Faith is to be found the Mystery of Christ, how he is our prototype of becoming as God is and one with Him in the Father.

Colossians 2:2-3  “That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

963

Mystery of the Father:  Much of the Mystery of the Father can be found in latter day revelations and in the Lectures on Faith, which explain how it is that we might become even as God is.

Colossians 2:2-3  “That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

964

Mystery of God:  The Mystery of God and who we are is a matter of deep understanding, much of which is discussed in the Lectures on Faith, and is had through the scriptures and modern revelation.  It is based in that we are the offspring of God the Father and that we might become as He is.  Just what that process is of becoming like God is discussed in the Lectures on Faith.

Colossians 2:2  “That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgment of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;”

Nail Fastened in a Sure Place:

Isaiah 22:23  “And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father's house.”

966

Name The (Hashem):  Christ as the ‘Son’ is ‘the name’ by which man may be redeemed and saved.  There is no other name by which man may be redeemed and saved from this fallen mortal estate.

967

Name Above Every Name: (Name above all names)

Philippians 2:9  “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:”

968

Nature’s God:

Hymn 37 The Wintry Day, Descending to Its Close : 3  “Away beyond the praises of the West, Where exiled Saints in solitude were blest,  Where industry the seal of wealth has set Amid the peaceful vales of Deseret, Unheeding still the fiercest blasts that blow, With tops encrusted by eternal snow, The tow’ring peaks that shield the tender sod Stand, types of freedom reared by nature’s God.”

969

Nazarene:  The word ‘Nazarene’ in the Greek New Testament only refers to Jesus a ‘citizen’ of the city of Nazareth.  Matthew records the name ‘Nazarene’ referring to Jesus.  It is not the same as the Old Testament order of being a Nazarite, though many presume that Jesus was a Nazarite.

Matthew 2:23  “And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.”

The early Church of Jesus Christ know as Christians were called the ‘Nazarenes’.  This ‘nickname’ is likely somewhat along the lines of today’s members of the Latter-day Church of Jesus Christ being called ‘Mormons’.  It was not the official name of the Church.

Acts 24:5   “For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:

Tertullus, an ‘orator’ (lawyer), spoke before Ananias the high priest of the elders (Sarim) accusing Paul in a ‘court action’.  Tertullus uses the name ‘Nazarenes’ in a derogatory manner, associating Paul with that pesky Jesus fellow of Nazareth who was crucified.  This would be the same manner in which the enemies of the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints would be called ‘Mormons’ in such a biased court of the early day’s of the LDS Church.

970

Nazarite:  Some have concluded that Jesus was a Nazarite.  This comes from a misunderstanding associated with Jesus being of the city of Nazareth and being called a Nazarene.  The Old Testament Nazarite was a ‘consecrated man’ who would never cut his hair, abstain from wine and would avoid any contact with the dead among other things.  On one of these points alone, it can be shown that Jesus was not a ‘Nazarite’.  Jesus rather than avoiding contact with the dead, was known to raise the dead as he did with Lazarus (John 11:19-45; 12:1) and the daughter of Jairus (Mark 5:35-43).

Jesus was no more a ‘Nazarite’ than where his followers.  Jesus’ followers were called derogatorily called ‘the sect of the Narazenes’ because they where followers of  Jesus who was of the city of Nazareth.  And because Jesus was of the city of Nazareth, he was called a Nazarene.  Jesus was not called a ‘Nazarene’ because he was of the order of a ‘Nazarite’, and Jesus’ followers where not of the order of ‘Nazarites’ because they where called ‘Nazarenes’.  The ironic part is that Jesus was not accepted in the city of Nazareth as the Christ at all.  In fact he did used the powers of a form of teleportation of the Holy Ghost to escape being thrown over a cliff by his unfriendly neighbors of Nazareth (Luke 4:16-30).  (Note: Jesus had already been ‘teleported’ by the power of the Holy Ghost during the three temptations of Satan just after his 40 day fast in the wilderness {See JST/IV Luke 4:5, 9 & 13}.  And the Apostles (likely with Peter) later were ‘teleported’ by the Holy Ghost from prison. {See Act 5:17-23)

971

New and Everlasting Covenant:  Jesus fulfilled the ‘Old Covenant’ and all was made new.  Christ is the messenger of the covenant.  He is the New and Everlasting Covenant.  He is the New and Everlasting Covenant of God.

972

New and Living Way:

Hebrews 10:20  “By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;”

973

New Covenant:  (See Old Testament, Old Covenant, New Testament)  The Old Covenant was of course that which the Lord made with Moses when the Lord took Israel out of the land of Egypt as clarified by Jeremiah.  This is the Old Testament, the New Covenant being that of the fulfillment of Jesus Christ of the Law of Moses in the New Testatment (New Covenant).

Many confuse the issue by thinking that the Old Testament or the Old Testament carried all the way back to Abraham, Noah and Adam.  This is not the case.  Moses was the first writer of the books of the Old Testament.  The Torah is the first five books of Moses.  Only the first book references times before the day of Moses.  And that was provided by Moses to give Israel an understanding of the creation and the religious history of the world up to the time of Moses.  That historical background is not a part of the Old Covenant being alluded by Jeremiah when he states that the LORD will make a ‘new covenant’.  That Old Covenant began with Moses’ receiving it in the wilderness of Sinai.

Therefore, the Covenant of Abraham and the blessings and promises of the fathers from the time of Adam, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and then Ephraim is not a part of the Old Covenant not made until the day of Moses.  That Patriarchal Covenant of the fathers, which was from before the foundation of the world, being the Covenant of God, is not to be considered the Law of Moses, the Old Testament, the Old Covenant which the New Covenant of the Gospel of Christ was to fulfill and replace.

While the Patriarchal Order, promises and covenant did have some similar pre-atonement elements in it, such as animal sacrifice in similitude of the sacrifice and atonement of Christ, it was not that ‘lesser law’ given as the Law of Moses which is the Old Covenant of the Old Testament.  The blessings, promises and covenants of the fathers, from Adam to Ephraim, was governed and performed by the higher priesthood, the priesthood of Melchizedek.  And the Old Covenant known as the Old Testament, consisting of the Law of Moses as the’lesser law’, was performed by the Levitical or Aaronic Priesthood.

Jeremiah 31:31-33  “¶ Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:  Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:  But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

Christ was the source of the ‘new covenant’, also known by the title the ‘New Testament’.  The difference between the ‘letter of the law’ performances of the Law of Moses and the ‘spirit of the law’ and how it becomes the ‘law in their inward parts’ is best illustrated by the Saviors sermon on the mount beginning with the ‘beattitudes’ and the Lord’s comparison with how his ‘new covenant’ law builds upon the old law by bring the law’s requirements into the inner being and heart of a man rather than just his outward performance.  (Note:  A fuller text of the ‘New Covenant’ sermon is contained in 3 Nephi 12-14 than is in Matthew 5-7, as the Lord teaches the same higher law of the new covenant to the Nephites with it including more than is in the variously compiled and translated Matthew text.

Hebrews 8:13  “In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth bold is ready to vanish away.”

D&C 84:54-58  “And your minds in times past have been darkened because of unbelief, and because you have treated lightly the things you have received—Which vanity and unbelief have brought the whole church under condemnation.  And this condemnation resteth upon the children of Zion, even all.  And they shall remain under this condemnation until they repent and remember the new covenant, even the Book of Mormon and the former commandments which I have given them, not only to say, but to do according to that which I have written—That they may bring forth fruit meet for their Father’s kingdom; otherwise there remaineth a scourge and judgment to be poured out upon the children of Zion.”

(See also New and Everlasting Covenant)

974

New Testament:  It would seem that the scriptures use the name ‘testament’ to be interchangeable with the word covenant.  In this respect Christ as Jehovah and Jesus, is both the Lord of the ‘Old’ and ‘New’ Testament or ‘Old’ and ‘New’ Coventant.  (See New Covenant)

Hebrews 9:15  “And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.”

974a

Nissi: Our Banner/Ensign

The latter-day restoration was to raise a banner, an ensign to the world. Some discussion is made concerning the nature of the banner or ensign. Some say it is the Church, other say it is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and other also say that it is Jesus Christ himself to whom the world is invited to come to in order to receive salvation by him. Here it is suggested that Jahweh, Jesus Christ himself stands as the one true banner that is raise to the world that they might find salvation in him.

975

No Other Means:

Alma 38:9  “And now, my son, I have told you this that ye may learn wisdom, that ye may learn of me that there is no other way or means whereby man can be saved, only in and through Christ. Behold, he is the life and the light of the world. Behold, he is the word of truth and righteousness.”

976

No Other Way:

Alma 38:9  “And now, my son, I have told you this that ye may learn wisdom, that ye may learn of me that there is no other way or means whereby man can be saved, only in and through Christ. Behold, he is the life and the light of the world. Behold, he is the word of truth and righteousness.”

977

No Respecter of Persons:  This is the fifth of six attributes or traits in the divine character of God as set out in the Lectures of Faith.  We are to attain to these character traits as we progress in becoming as God is.

D&C 38:16  “And for your salvation I give unto you a commandment, for I have heard

your prayers, and the poor have complained before me, and the rich have I made, and

all flesh is mine, and I am no respecter of persons.”

Lectures on Faith 3:17  Fifthly, that he is no respecter of persons: but in every nation he that fears God and works righteousness is accepted of him.”

Obtained Eternal Redemption for Us:

Hebrews 9:12  “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.”

979

Offered Himself:

Hebrews 9:14  “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

980

Offering and a Sacrifice to God:

Ephesians 5:2  “And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.”

981

Offspring of David:

Revelation 22:16  “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.”

982

Ointment Poured Forth:

Song of Solomon 1:3  “Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee.”

983

Old Testament:  (See New Testament)  It would seem that the scriptures use the name ‘testament’ to be interchangeable with the word covenant.  In this respect Christ as Jehovah and Jesus, is both the Lord of the ‘Old’ and ‘New’ Testament or ‘Old’ and ‘New’ Coventant.

Hebrews 9:15  “And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.”

984

Omega (Alpha and):

In Revelation 1:8, the Lord God said, "I am the Alpha and Omega...who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."

Revelation 1:8  “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”

Omega is the end, the ending and the last.  Our Salvation begins and ends in Jehovah who is Jesus Christ.  And while the term Omega or end implies an ending, we know that Jehovah is without end.  He is eternal and everlasting.  Yet in matters concerning this earth’s probation they do have a beginning and an end, an alpha and omega.  This second mortal estate is sandwiched between the prior preexistent eternity and the eternity of exaltation.  This estate has a beginning and an end, and that beginning and end are founded in Christ our God.  Eternity by definition has no such time constraint.

Mortality by definition is measured in ‘time’.  Eternity by definition is not measured in time. Thus the beginning and ending reference that period of time for which mortality or the second estate doth run.

Notice the distinction which Christ makes in Revelation 1:17-18.  He states that he is the ‘first and last’, but that can only have reference to a span of time, this second estate’s time.  For Christ continues and states that he is he that liveth, who was dead; and the he will live for evermore.  Thus the time frame seems set as this mortality’s time frame of this second estate.

Revelation 1:17-18  “And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:  I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”

Revelation 22:13  “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.”

Once again, Jesus declares, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.”  Our salvation begins and ends in Christ.

985

OMNISCIENCE  Omniscient/Omnificent:  The word does not appear in scriptures as such, but in describing the extent of God’s knowledge and understanding there are many enlightening passages which substantiate the Omnificence of God.  And God offers this quality to man by his power.

Letures on Faith 2: 2. We here observe that God is the only supreme governor and independent being in whom all fullness and perfection dwell; who is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient; without beginning of days or end of life; and that in him every good gift and every good principle dwell; and that he is the Father of lights; in him the principle of faith dwells independently, and he is the object in whom the faith of all other rational and accountable beings center for life and salvation.”

Moroni 10:5  “And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.”

One facet of omniscience is to know and understand the ‘truth of all things’.  And by the power of the Holy Ghost, God offers that same knowledge to man.  Of course man must put forth the effort to learn the truth of all things and he must be receptive to the influence and promptings of the Holy Spirit to do so.  It is a process of time by which this occurs.  Man learns a little here and a little there, progressing his way towards God,  But we are guaranteed that whatsoever level of intelligence we attain to in this life, it will be a part of our understanding in the world to come.

D&C 130:18-19  “Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection. And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come.”  (see also 1 Nephi 10:19, John 14:26)

Of course God’s ‘knowledge and intelligence’ is not the same as man’s ‘knowledge and intelligence’, for ‘man’s intelligence’ is based upon the imaginations of man.  And since man’s learning is not based upon God’s truth, but upon their own learning, then man finds himself in a state of ‘for ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth, for they obtain not the truth from the proper source (2 Timothy 3:7 & 2 Nephi 9:28-29).

In fact we are told in scripture that the Glory of God is Intelligence (D&C 93:36).  In God’s great and limitless knowledge and understanding lies great power and upon God’s intelligence must lie his Omnipotence.  There is an integral relationship between such power and knowledge.

God knows and sees all things.  The scriptures refer to this as God’s ‘all-searching eye’, which is also referenced as the ‘all-seeing eye’ (see ‘All Searching Eye).  For nothing is hide from God’s knowledge and understanding.

Mosiah 27:31  “Yea, every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess before him. Yea, even at the last day, when all men shall stand to be judged of him, then shall they confess that he is God; then shall they confess, who live without God in the world, that the judgment of an everlasting punishment is just upon them; and they shall quake, and tremble, and shrink beneath the glance of his all-searching eye.”  (see also 2 Nephi 9:44, Jacob 2:10)

God’s knowledge is to know all things from the beginning unto the end.  And he sees into the hearts of men and knows and discerns their very thoughts.

John 6:64  “But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.”  (see also Abraham 2:8, Moses 1:6; 7:67, Psalms 147:5, Isaiah 41:26; 46:10; 48:3, Acts 15:18, 1 Nephi 9:6; 20:5, 2 Nephi 9:29; 27:10, Alma 26:35; 40:5 & 10, Moroni 7:22; Ether 3:25, D&C 38:2; 88:6 & 41; 130:7)

Job 42:2  “I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.”  (see also Genesis 18:19, 2 Chronicles 6:30, Psalms 44:21, Isaiah 66:18, Jeremiah 17:10, Ezekiel 11:5, Matthew 9:4, Luke 16:15, Acts 1:24, Hebrews 4:12, 2 Nephi 27:27, Jacob 2:5; Alma 18:18 & 32; 39:8, Helaman 9:41, 3 Nephi 28:6, D&C 6:16; 121:24)

Omnipotent:

Mosiah 3:21  “And behold, when that time cometh, none shall be found blameless before God, except it be little children, only through repentance and faith on the name of the Lord God Omnipotent.”

Mosiah 5:15  “Therefore, I would that ye should be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works, that Christ, the Lord God Omnipotent, may seal you his, that you may be brought to heaven, that ye may have everlasting salvation and eternal life, through the wisdom, and power, and justice, and mercy of him who created all things, in heaven and in earth, who is God above all. Amen.”

Revelation 19:6  “And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”

Lectures on Faith 2: 2.

987

Omnipresent: While God is a single personage or being, His influence and presence can be felt everywhere.  Often spoken of as feeling of the Spirit of God, man can feel God’s presence and influence in his life at all times.  This is in a great part able to be performed in conjunction with the mission of the Holy Ghost, who is a personage of spirit and thus can be felt within a person’s individual being.  As members of God’s Church, we are given what is called the ‘Gift of the Holy Ghost’ and by this gift we can have God’s presence and influence felt in our lives at all times as the Holy Ghost becomes our ‘constant companion.

Though the Holy Ghost is a separate being from God the Father or Jesus Christ in the Godhead, it is the mission of the Holy Ghost to bring the presence of the Father, God, into the lives of those who live worthy.  Non-members of God’s Church can feel the Holy Ghost’s influence and presence when they so seek after the witness of the Spirit.  But unlike members of the Church, they are not confirmed and blessed with the Gift of the Holy Ghost and God’s constant companionship until they are baptized and confirmed with the bestowal of the Gift of the Holy Ghost as members of God’s Kingdom on earth.

Omnipresent ever-present all-pervading ubiquitous everywhere universal worldwide influence felt everywhere present.

988

One:  Christ in many respects is the ‘one’.

Abraham 3:24  “And there stood one among them that was like unto God, and he said unto those who were with him: We will go down, for there is space there, and we will take of these materials, and we will make an earth whereon these may dwell;”

This ‘one’ was Jehovah, who being the eldest of God, was leader among the spirit children of God in the preexistence.  And it was he who lead in the bring about the fulfillment of the Plan of God, for it was he that stated, ‘We will go down, for there is space there, and we will take of these materials, and we will make an earth whereon these may dwell’, meaning we the spirit children of God.

1 Nephi 1:9  “And it came to pass that he saw One descending out of the midst of heaven, and he beheld that his luster was above that of the sun at noon-day.”

It is significant to understand that in respect to this second estate and our mortal probation, there is but one God who we must work through and that only is Christ.  Through him and only him we come to the Father and exaltation.  He is our one God, our one Shepherd, our one mediator between man and the Father.  And though there are many God’s in the heavens, Christ is the one God of our salvation and there is no other beside him.

1 Nephi 13: 41  “And they must come according to the words which shall be established by the mouth of the Lamb; and the words of the Lamb shall be made known in the records of thy seed, as well as in the records of the twelve apostles of the Lamb; wherefore they both shall be established in one; for there is one God and one Shepherd over all the earth.”

Zechariah 14:9  “And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.”

1 Timothy 2:5  “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”

The singleness of the way provided through Christ is emphasized in Ephesians.

Ephesians 4:4-6  “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”

Romans 5:15  “But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.”

It is important here to again distinguish between the God who had been set over this second estate, being Jehovah who is the same as Jesus Christ, and the Father who does not administer to this second estate having progressed beyond it.  God the Father is an advanced exalted being whose progression has taken him far beyond any corruptible mortal second estate.  In order for us to be administered to by ‘God’, the Father selected and anointed his firstborn son in the spirit, Jehovah, to be our God.  The Father bestowed upon him all the powers and fullness of God, with which power Jehovah, the Word, created heaven and earth.  And it is through this power that Jehovah, who is the same as Jesus Christ, does administer to us in this second estate, he being a part of this second estate, where as the Father is not a part of this estate and not the one who administers to those of us who are in this mortal existence.  Jehovah, Christ, is our God, our administering God, having been established as such by the ‘divine investiture’ given him by the Father who is in the exalted realms far beyond this earthly estate.

1 Corinthians 8:6  “But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.”

Thus we understand that there is ‘one’ God, the Father, ‘of whom are all things’.  And there is also ‘one’ God, the Son, who is our ‘one’ Lord Jesus Christ, even Jehovah, by whom are all things concerning this second estate, and we by him.

Matthew 19:17  “And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.”

Deuteronomy 6:4  “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:” (see also Mark 12:29)

989

One Body:  We hear that Christ and his Father are One and that we are to become One even as they are One.  Many interpret this to mean that the Father and the Son are one and the same being rather than being two separate beings, the Father and the Son.  What Father is his own Son and what Son is his own Father?  The thought makes reason stare.  In 1 Corinthians chapter 12 it helps clarify how and in what respect we all may become ‘One Body’ with and in God the Father and in the Son.

1 Corinthians 12:3-14  “Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.  Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.  And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.  And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.  But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.  For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;  To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:  But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.  For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.  For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.  For the body is not one member, but many.”

990

One descending out of the midst of heaven:

1 Nephi 1:9  “And it came to pass that he saw One descending out of the midst of heaven, and he beheld that his luster was above that of the sun at noon-day.”

991

One Eternal Round:

1 Nephi 10:19  “For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in these times as in times of old, and as well in times of old as in times to come; wherefore, the course of the Lord is one eternal round.

Lecture on Faith 3:15  Thirdly, that he changes not, neither is there variableness with him; but that he is the same from everlasting to everlasting, being the same yesterday, to-day, and for ever; and that his course is one eternal round, without variation.”

992

One God:

1 Nephi 13:41  “And they must come according to the words which shall be established by the mouth of the Lamb; and the words of the Lamb shall be made known in the records of thy seed, as well as in the records of the twelve apostles of the Lamb; wherefore they both shall be established in one; for there is one God and one Shepherd over all the earth.”

993

One God the Father:

1 Corinthians 8:6  “But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.”

994

One Lord Jesus Christ:

1 Corinthians 8:6  “But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.”

995

One Shepherd:

1 Nephi 13:41  “And they must come according to the words which shall be established by the mouth of the Lamb; and the words of the Lamb shall be made known in the records of thy seed, as well as in the records of the twelve apostles of the Lamb; wherefore they both shall be established in one; for there is one God and one Shepherd over all the earth.”

996

One with the Father:  While God, the Father and God, the Son are two separate and distinct beings, they are one in purpose.  That purpose is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man (see Moses 1:39).  In the realm of this second estate, the Son act in harmony as the Father, doing all that the Father would have him do.  He is one with the Father is unity of this performance.

John 10:30  I and my Father are one.”

997

Only Begotten:

JST (IV) Genesis 1:27-29  “And I, God, said unto mine Only Begotten, which was with me from the beginning, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and it was so.  And I, God, said, Let them have dominion over the fishes of the sea, and over the

fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping

thing that creepeth upon the earth.  And I, God, created man in mine own image, in the image of mine Only Begotten created I him; male and female created I them.”

Moses 1:6  “And I have a work for thee, Moses my son; and thou art in the similitude of

mine Only Begotten; and mine Only Begotten is and shall be the Savior, for he is full of

grace and truth; but there is no God beside me, and all things are present with me, for I

know them all.”

Moses 1:33  “And worlds without number have I created; and I also created them for mine own purpose; and by the Son I created them, which is mine Only Begotten.

Moses 2:1  “And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto Moses, saying: Behold, I reveal

unto you concerning this heaven, and this earth; write the words which I speak. I am

the Beginning and the End, the Almighty God; by mine Only Begotten I created these

things; yea, in the beginning I created the heaven, and the earth upon which thou

standest.”

Moses 3:18  “And I, the Lord God, said unto mine Only Begotten, that it was not good

that the man should be alone; wherefore, I will make an help meet for him.”

JST (IV) Genesis 1:

998

Only Begotten of the Father:

Unique, one-of-a-kind Son of God – first born of the Spirit only begotten of the flesh

Moses 5:7  “And then the angel spake, saying: This thing is a similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten of the Father, which is full of grace and truth.

Moses 5:9  “And in that day the Holy Ghost fell upon Adam, which beareth record of the

Father and the Son, saying: I am the Only Begotten of the Father from the beginning,

henceforth and forever, that as thou hast fallen thou mayest be redeemed, and all

mankind, even as many as will.”

2 Nephi 25:12  “But, behold, they shall have wars, and rumors of wars; and when the day cometh that the Only Begotten of the Father, yea, even the Father of heaven and of earth, shall manifest himself unto them in the flesh, behold, they will reject him, because of their iniquities, and the hardness of their hearts, and the stiffness of their necks.”

John 1:14, 18  “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

D&C 76:23  “For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice

bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father—“

D&C 76:35  “Having denied the Holy Spirit after having received it, and having denied

the Only Begotten Son of the Father, having crucified him unto themselves and put him

to an open shame.”

999

Only Begotten Son (His, Mine):

Moses 1:32  “And by the word of my power, have I created them, which is mine Only

Begotten Son, who is full of grace and truth.”

Jacob 4:5  “Behold, they believed in Christ and worshiped the Father in his name, and also we worship the Father in his name. And for this intent we keep the law of Moses, it pointing our souls to him; and for this cause it is sanctified unto us for righteousness, even as it was accounted unto Abraham in the wilderness to be obedient unto the commands of God in offering up his son Isaac, which is a similitude of God and his Only Begotten Son.

John 1:18  “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.”

John 3:16   “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

1 John 4:9  “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.”

1000

Only Begotten Son of God:  This exact title does not appear as such but it is well implied from a number of scriptural references, all of which that the Only Begotten Son is the Son of God and that the title is true in this form.

John 3:16  “¶ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

1 John 4:9  “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.”

D&C 49:5  “Thus saith the Lord; for I am God, and have sent mine Only Begotten Son into the world for the redemption of the world, and have decreed that he that receiveth him shall be saved, and he that receiveth him not shall be ddamned—“

D&C 138:14  “All these had departed the mortal life, firm in the hope of a glorious resurrection, through the grace of God the Father and his Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ.”

1001

Only Hope:  Our ‘only hope’ is in Christ.  That is a singular ‘hope’ in him as there is no ‘hope’ in any other, he being the ‘only hope’ given to us by the Father, that through Christ we may return unto the presence of God and obtain eternal life and immortality.

Jacob 2:19  “And after ye have obtained a hope in Christ ye shall obtain riches, if ye seek them; and ye will seek them for the intent to do good—to clothe the naked, and to feed the hungry, and to liberate the captive, and administer relief to the sick and the afflicted.”

Joel 3:16  “The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.”

1 Corinthians 15:19-22  “If in this alife only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.  For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.  For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”

1 Timothy 1:1  “PAUL, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;”

1002

Only Being Whom They Should Worship:

D&C 20:19  “And gave unto them commandments that they should love and serve him, the only living and true God, and that he should be the only being whom they should worship.”

1003

Only Living and True God:

D&C 20:19  “And gave unto them commandments that they should love and serve him, the only living and true God, and that he should be the only being whom they should worship.”

1004

Only Potentate:  Monarch, Ruler, Sovereign, Emperor, Monarch, Royal leader, and King are among the names that could be used in place of potentate.  The dictionary states that a potentate is a person who possess great power or sway; a prince, sovereign, emperor, king or monarch.  Potentate was translated from the word ‘Dunastes’ (transliterated form pronounced doo-nas’-tace) which means prince, potentate, courtier, highofficer and/or royal minister of great authority.  The word is used three times in the New Testament and is translated into the KJV as ‘mighty’, ‘of great authority’, and ‘Potentate’.  The reference in Luke 1:52 does not have reference to God or Christ but to ‘mighty’ men.  And the reference in Acts 8:27 does not reference God or Christ either, but a man ‘of great authority’.  It is used in reference to Christ only in 1 Timothy as appears next.

1 Timothy 6:15  “Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;”

Jesus Christ is our Great and mighty God of authority and power as give us by God the Father.  Jesus is our King of kings, and our Lord of lords.  There is none other.  There is none other like unto him.  He is our one and only God as he was anointed and set forth by God the Father to be such unto us.

1005

Only True God:

John 17:3  “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

God the Father established Jehovah, His Son, to be the mediating God of this earth. We come to the Father by way of the Son.  As such, to us in mortality, Christ, Jehovah, is the God we worship through.  He is the God of the Old Testament.  He is the God of this Earth.  He is the God and King of the Millennial Day.  Yet our ultimate goal is to obtain ‘life eternal’ and return back to the presence of God the Father.  In this, Jehovah gives all glory and honor unto the Father.  And in obtaining that ‘life eternal’ we come to know again God the Father, who is and will be our Only True God, Christ giving all glory and honor to His name.

Yet while in this mortality, it is Jehovah who is and acts as our God.  He is our Lord unto Salvation.

1006

Only Wise God:

1 Timothy 1:17  “Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.”

Jude 1:25  “To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.”

1007

Ordained of God:

D&C 50:26-27   “He that is ordained of God and sent forth, the same is appointed to be the greatest, notwithstanding he is the least and the servant of all.   Wherefore, he is possessor of all things; for all things are subject unto him, both in heaven and on the earth, the life and the light, the Spirit and the power, sent forth by the will of the Father through Jesus Christ, his Son.”

1008

Order of God:

D&C 89: 2  “To be sent greeting; not by commandment or constraint, but by revelation and the word of wisdom, showing forth the order and will of God in the temporal salvation of all saints in the last days—“

1009

Owl of the Desert:

Psalms 102:6  “I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert.”

1 John 2:1  “MY little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:”

1011

Passed Into the Heavens:

Hebrews 4:14  “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.”

Hebrews 8:1  “NOW of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;”

Hebrews 9:24  “For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:”

1 Peter 3:22  “Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.”

Passover (our):

1 Corinthians 5:7  “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:”

1013

Passover Lamb:  The Passover Lamb was set out in the Old Testament to be a lamb without blemish, a male lamb (Exodus 12:5, Leviticus 23:13).  It was a similitude of the coming sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who we know and understand to be the Lamb of God.  It was during the week of the Passover that Christ was sacrificed or performed his sacrifice for the benefit of mankind.  In the Garden of Gethsemane he bleed from every pore and suffered for the sins of the world and then he was crucified upon the cross and died that he might bring about the resurrection and loose the bands of death.  Thus Christ is the ‘Passover Lamb’.  He is the one who was sacrificed for us.  All the sacrifices of the Old Testament Law of Moses and those performed by Adam, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, etc., were done in remembrance and in foreshadowing similitude of the great sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 5:7  “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:”

1 Pet. 1:19  “But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:”

2 Nephi 11: 4  “Behold, my soul delighteth in proving unto my people the truth of the coming of Christ; for, for this end hath the law of Moses been given; and all things which have been given of God from the beginning of the world, unto man, are the typifying of him.”

John 1:29 & 36  “¶ The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

. . .

“And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!”

Ephesians 2:14  “For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;”

Pele:

Perhaps but a curious fact is that the Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele has come down with one of those godly names of the Messiah. Indeed the name Pele is one of the titles which does belong to God.

1017

Psalms 102:6  “I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert.”

1018

Perfect God:

Alma 42:15  “And now, the plan of mercy could not be brought about except an atonement should be made; therefore God himself atoneth for the sins of the world, to bring about the plan of mercy, to appease the demands of justice, that God might be a perfect, just God, and a merciful God also.”

Perfect in Christ:

Moroni 10:32  “Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.”

1021

Perfect Man:

James 3:2  “For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.”

1022

Perfected Forever:

Hebrews 10:14  “For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.”

1023

Perfection:

Lectures on Faith 2:2  “We here observe that God is the only supreme governor and independent being in whom all fullness and perfection dwell; who is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient; without beginning of days or end of life; and that in him every good gift and every good principle dwell; and that he is the Father of lights; in him the principle of faith dwells independently, and he is the object in whom the faith of all other rational and accountable beings center for life and salvation.”

1024

Person of Christ:

2 Corinthians 2:10  “To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;”

1025

Personage (s):  Even as we are, the Father, Son and Holy Ghost are and possess a personage of Spirit.  Within our temporal temples of flesh and blood there dwells our personage of Spirit.  The Father was also an exalted personage of celestial body of flesh and bone and Spirit.  It is to that end that is our design.  The Son, being the first born spirit child of the Father was like us and even the Holy Ghost only a Spirit Being or Personage of Spirit only until he came to earth to take upon himself a bone of flesh and after his resurrection he has become an immortal personage of flesh and bone and Spirit, were as we are mortal and corruptible he is not, becoming as the Father is.  The Holy Ghost will remain a Spirit in order to perform his functional operation as witness to and for the Father and Son unto man until that function is no longer required of him to perform.  Then we must presume that he will also then obtain an body of flesh and bone to the end of his eternal progression.

D&C 130:22  “The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit. Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us.”

JS_H 1:17  “17 It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!”

JS_H 1:25  “25 So it was with me. I had actually seen a light, and in the midst of that light I saw two Personages, and they did in reality speak to me; and though I was hated and persecuted for saying that I had seen a vision, yet it was true; and while they were persecuting me, reviling me, and speaking all manner of evil against me falsely for so saying, I was led to say in my heart: Why persecute me for telling the truth? I have actually seen a vision; and who am I that I can withstand God, or why does the world think to make me deny what I have actually seen? For I had seen a vision; I knew it, and I knew that God knew it, and I could not deny it, neither dared I do it; at least I knew that by so doing I would offend God, and come under condemnation.”

1026

Personage of Spirit, Glory and Power:  Both the Father and the Son were and are personages of spirit, glory and power.  They will never cease being personages of spirit just as we are and never will cease from being personages of spirit.  The Father had and has the added distinction of having his spirit housed in an exalted tabernacle of flesh and bone.  Christ now also does since the time of his resurrection, though as Jehovah before he was a personage of spirit only.

Lectures on Faith 5:2  “ . . . the Father being a personage of spirit, glory, and power, possessing all perfection and fullness . . . “

1027

Personage of Tabernacle:

Lectures on Faith 5:2  “ . . . They are the Father and the Son—the Father being a personage of spirit, glory, and power, possessing all perfection and fullness, the Son, who was in the bosom of the Father, a personage of tabernacle, made or fashioned like unto man, or being in the form and likeness of man, or rather man was formed after his likeness and in his image; he is also the express image and likeness of the personage of the Father  . . .”

The usual use of the term ‘tabernacle’ does refer to the physical body of flesh and bone which houses our spirit.  And here is no exception as the ‘personage of tabernacle’ references that tabernacle ‘made or fashion like unto man’ ‘being that it is in the form and likeness of man’.  And this of course was accomplished by Christ being born of woman, Mary.  Yet a misconception can arise out of this seemingly singular interpretation that Christ, His Spirit, was not in such form or likeness before.  And this is a hasty conclusion the unknowing do seem to jump to.

The truth of the matter is that the spirit has substance, shape and form and can even ‘eat’ as a man eats (In Genesis the Lord and his three angels do eat what Abraham’s hospitality does prepare for them to eat. Yet the spirit is of more pure material and matter. There is no such thing as immaterial matter.  The spirit is of element and substance, and is a tabernacle in it own right and realm of being.

What is significant and logical is that the image and likeness of the spirit is also that image and likeness of this mortal body of flesh and blood which we currently are housed in.  If our spirit were to step to the side of this tabernacle of clay, it would have the same appearance and not just because the Hollywood movies make it as such.  Rather, they more than likely obtained that concept from much more ancient sources, even older than Shakespeare’s Hamlet, say the Bible.

Head, shoulders, knees and toes; eyes, ears, mouth and nose:  the spirit has all those items, even as we do.  And their functions would be the same as ours.  Their eyes would see and cry, their nose would breath and smell, their mouth would taste, eat and speak, their ears would be for hearing.  And their hands would be for feeling though they may well have additional senses which we are not aware of due to this physical body’s diminished use and functionality to use them.  This is good logic and reasoning.

1028

Physician:

Luke 4:23  “And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.”

1029

Pierced:  Jesus was pierced in his hands, his feet and in his side.  These markings will still be borne by the Savior when he comes again as witness of who he is.  And the Jews will look upon the marks of the wound and realize who it is that the Messiah is, even Jesus Christ.  And they will mourn that they had crucified the Only Begotten Son of God, the Firstborn of the Father in Spirit and the Only Begotten Son in the flesh.

Zechariah 12:10  “And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.”

Pillar by Night:

Hymn 6 Redeemer of Israel:1  “Redeemer of Israel, Our only delight. On Whom for a blessing we call. Our shadow by day And our pillar by night, Our King, our Deliv’rer our all.”

Exodus 13:21-22  “And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.”

1031

Pillar of a Cloud:

Exodus 13:21-22  “And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.”

Numbers 14:14  “And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.”

1032

Pillar of Fire:  The presence, conveyance and/or power of the Lord is often seen and experienced as a pillar of fire or intense glorious light beyond description.  It is of some interest to consider that the Lord and or divine messenger may be within the pillar of light but not all can see the image of the personage within the pillar of light but they can see the pillar of light or fire itself.

Exodus 13:21-22  “And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:  He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.”

We know that Moses did see and speak with the Lord ‘face to face’, meaning that Moses did see the personage of the Lord’s spirit.  In Numbers 14 it seems to portray this ‘dual’ imagery wherein, depending upon one’s faith and level of need just the pillar of fire or light is seen or the actual being within the pillar is open to be seen of man through the power of God conveyed by the Spirit of God.

Nehemiah 9:12  “Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go.”

Now the presence and appearance of the Lord doth come in its glory in a pillar of fire or a pillar of light.  Lehi, when he prayed unto the Lord for the people and to receive guidance of the Lord, did see a pillar of fire which dwelt upon a rock.  That Lehi’s faith was not as strong as the brother of Jared who by his faith saw in the light the finger of the Lord, seems apparent.  Yet Lehi did return home and cast himself upon his bed and did see dream visions which contained the images of the Lord.

1 Nephi 1:6  “And it came to pass as he prayed unto the Lord, there came a pillar of fire and dwelt upon a rock before him; and he saw and heard much; and because of the things which he saw and heard he did quake and tremble exceedingly.”

Helaman 5:24  “And when they saw that they were encircled about with a pillar of fire, and that it burned them not, their hearts did take courage.”

Revelations 10:1  “AND I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:”

This mighty ‘angel’ upon whose head is the very symbol of the everlasting covenant, the rainbow, was of the brightness of the sun and descended as it were upon a pillar or pillars of fire.  He has the appearance of the Lord and certainly is the Lord or one who come by divine investiture in the appearance of the Lord.  (See also Angel)

D&C 29:12  “12 And again, verily, verily, I say unto you, and it hath gone forth in a firm decree, by the will of the Father, that mine apostles, the Twelve which were with me in my ministry at Jerusalem, shall stand at my right hand at the day of my coming in a pillar of fire, being clothed with robes of righteousness, with crowns upon their heads, in glory even as I am, to judge the whole house of Israel, even as many as have loved me and kept my commandments, and none else.”

Joseph Smith History 1:16  “But, exerting all my powers to call upon God to deliver me out of the power of this enemy which had seized upon me, and at the very moment when I was ready to sink into despair and abandon myself to destruction—not to an imaginary ruin, but to the power of some actual being from the unseen world, who had such marvelous power as I had never before felt in any being—just at this moment of great alarm, I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me.”

This ‘pillar’ seems to be a conduit connecting heaven and earth, a means of conveyance, which is not limited to the presence of the Lord, but may be used by others such as Moroni when he visited the room of Joseph Smith (see Joseph Smith History 1:30-32, 43, 44, 46-47).  And it seems to be how resurrected beings may be raised up and enter into heaven.

D&C 88:97  “97 And they who have slept in their graves shall come forth, for their graves shall be opened; and they also shall be caught up to meet him in the midst of the pillar of heaven

Consider the description of Moroni’s withdrawal from Joseph’s presence back into ‘heaven’.

Joseph Smith History 1:43  “43 After this communication, I saw the light in the room begin to gather immediately around the person of him who had been speaking to me, and it continued to do so until the room was again left dark, except just around him; when, instantly I saw, as it were, a conduit open right up into heaven, and he ascended till he entirely disappeared, and the room was left as it had been before this heavenly light had made its appearance.”

Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief:

Hymn 29 A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief : 1  “A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief hath often crossed me on my way, Who sued so humbly for relief That I could never answer nay. I had not pow’r to ask his name, Whereto he went or whence he came; Yet there was something in his eye That won my love; I knew not why.”

Matthew 25:34  “Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:  For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:  Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.  Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?  When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?  Or when saw we thee asick, or in prison, and came unto thee?  And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

Mosiah 2:17 17  “And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.”

1040

Portion of Mine Inheritance:

Psalms 16:5  “The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.”

1041

Possessor of All Things:

D&C 50:26-27   “He that is ordained of God and sent forth, the same is appointed to be the greatest, notwithstanding he is the least and the servant of all.   Wherefore, he is possessor of all things; for all things are subject unto him, both in heaven and on the earth, the life and the light, the Spirit and the power, sent forth by the will of the Father through Jesus Christ, his Son.”

1042

Potter:

Jeremiah 18:6  “O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.”

Power:  Inseparable from faith, faith or power, just as faith and works, is set out as the second attribute of God in the Lectures on Faith.

Lectures on Faith 4:6  6. SecondlyFaith or power. Hebrews 11:3: "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God." Genesis 1:1: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." Isaiah 14:24, 27: "The Lord of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand. . . . For the Lord of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?"”

Lectures on Faith 4:12  And it is not less necessary that men should have the idea of the existence of the attribute power in the Deity; for unless God had power over all things, and was able by his power to control all things, and thereby deliver his creatures who put their trust in him from the power of all beings that might seek their destruction, whether in heaven, on earth, or in hell, men could not be saved. But with the idea of the existence of this attribute planted in the mind, men feel as though they had nothing to fear who put their trust in God, believing that he has power to save all who come to him to the very uttermost.”

Jeremiah 51:15  “He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heaven by his understanding.”

D&C 65:6  “Wherefore, may the kingdom of God go forth, that the kingdom of heaven may come, that thou, O God, mayest be glorified in heaven so on earth, that thine enemies may be subdued; for thine is the honor, power and glory, forever and ever. Amen.”

D&C 84:102  “Glory, and honor, and power, and might, Be ascribed to our God; for he

is full of mercy, Justice, grace and truth, and peace, Forever and ever, Amen.”

1044

Power from on High:

Luke 24:49  49  “¶ And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.”

D&C 20:8  “And gave him power from on high, by the means which were before prepared, to translate the Book of Mormon;”

1045

Power of God:

Luke 22:67-71  “Art thou the aChrist? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:  And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.  Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.  Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.  And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.”

1 Corinthians 1:24  “But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.”

D&C 1:29  “And after having received the record of the Nephites, yea, even my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., might have power to translate through the mercy of God, by the power of God, the Book of Mormon.”

D&C 88:45  “The earth rolls upon her wings, and the sun giveth his light by day, and the moon giveth her light by night, and the stars also give their light, as they roll upon their wings in their glory, in the midst of the power of God.

1046

Power of the Earth:

D&C 88:10  “And the earth also, and the power thereof, even the earth upon which you stand.”

1047

Power of the Holy Ghost:

1 Nephi 10:19  “For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in these times as in times of old, and as well in times of old as in times to come; wherefore, the course of the Lord is one eternal round.”

1 Nephi 10:17  “And it came to pass after I, Nephi, having heard all the words of my father, concerning the things which he saw in a vision, and also the things which he spake by the power of the Holy Ghost, which power he received by faith on the Son of God—and the Son of God was the Messiah who should come—I, Nephi, was desirous also that I might see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost, which is the gift of God unto gall those who diligently seek him, as well in times of hold as in the time that he should manifest himself unto the children of men.”

1 Nephi 13:37  “And blessed are they who shall seek to bring forth my Zion at that day, for they shall have the gift and the power of the Holy Ghost; and if they endure unto the end they shall be lifted up at the last day, and shall be saved in the everlasting kingdom of the Lamb; and whoso shall publish peace, yea, tidings of great joy, how beautiful upon the mountains shall they be.”

1048

Power of the Moon:

D&C 88:8  “As also he is in the moon, and is the light of the moon, and the power thereof by which it was made;”

1049

Power of the Stars:

D&C 88:9  “As also the light of the stars, and the power thereof by which they were made;”

1050

Power of the Sun:

D&C 88:7  “Which truth shineth. This is the light of Christ. As also he is in the sun, and the light of the sun, and the power thereof by which it was made.”

which they were made;”

1051

Powerful:

D&C 65:1  “Hearken, and lo, a voice as of one sent down from on high, who is mighty and powerful, whose going forth is unto the ends of the earth, yea, whose voice is unto men--Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”

1052

Powerful King:  Considering Ammon to be God or the Great Spirit, King Lamoni’s servants called him Rabbanah, which means ‘Powerful King’.  (See Rabbanah)

Alma 18:13  “And one of the king’s servants said unto him, Rabbanah, which is, being interpreted, powerful or great king, considering their kings to be powerful; and thus he said unto him: Rabbanah, the king desireth thee to stay.”

1053

Preach Deliverance to the Captives:  The ‘Captives’ are of two general types.  There are those who are bound by sin, held captive by it, who are still living in the flesh.  And then there are those who are being held ‘captive’ in the spirit prison after death bound by sin and not having received of the teaching of Christ and meeting the provisions of release, a part of which is base upon the dead person’s acceptance of Christ and the living of Christ’s commandments.

Luke 4:18   “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,”

Isaiah 61:1  “THE Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;”

1054

Preach Good Tidings Unto the Meek (the gospel to the poor):

Isaiah 61:1  “THE Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;”

Luke 4:18   “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,”

1055

Precious:

1 Peter 2:4  “To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,”

1 Peter 2:7  “Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,”

1056

Precious Above All:

1 Nephi 11:7-9  “And behold this thing shall be given unto thee for a sign, that after thou hast beheld the tree [Tree of Life] which bore the fruit which thy father tasted, thou shalt also behold a man descending out of heaven, and him shall ye witness; and after ye have witnessed him ye shall bear record that it is the Son of God.  And it came to pass that the Spirit said unto me: Look! And I looked and beheld a tree; and it was like unto the tree which my father had seen; and the beauty thereof was far beyond, yea, exceeding of all beauty; and the whiteness thereof did exceed the whiteness of the driven snow.  And it came to pass after I had seen the tree, I said unto the Spirit: I behold thou hast shown unto me the tree which is precious above all.”

1057

Precious Corner Stone:

Isaiah 28:16  “Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.”

1 Peter 2:6  “Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.”

1058

Preeminence:

Colossians 1:18  “And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.”

1059

Prepared from before the Foundation of the World:

Moses 5:57  “For they would not hearken unto his voice, nor believe on his Only Begotten Son, even him whom he declared should come in the meridian of time, who was

prepared from before the foundation of the world.”

1060

Presence of God:  (See Angel of His Presence / Angel of God’s Presence)

Moses 1:9  “And the presence of God withdrew from Moses, that his glory was not upon

Moses; and Moses was left unto himself. And as he was left unto himself, he fell unto

the earth.”

Moses 1:31  “And behold, the glory of the Lord was upon Moses, so that Moses stood in

the presence of God, and talked with him face to face. And the Lord God said unto

Moses: For mine own purpose have I made these things. Here is wisdom and it

remaineth in me.”

1061

Price:

1 Corinthians 6:20  “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”

Hebrews 5:5-6  “So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.  As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.”

Hebrews 7:21-22  “(For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)  By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.

2 Nephi 19:6  “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Hymn 50:  Come, thou Glorious Day of Promise v3  “Oh, that soon thou souldst to Jacob Thy enliv’ning Spirit send!  Of their unbelief and misery Make, O Lord, a speedy end.  Lord Messiah!  Lord Messiah!  Prince of Peace o’er Israel reign.”

1070

1071

Prince of the Kings of the Earth:

Revelation 1:5  “And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,”

1072

Proclaim Liberty to the Captives:  The captives are those bound by sin and the lack of accepting the gospel into their lives whether in the life or the next.  The Jewish compiled Old Testament, post Christ, eliminated the true process required of such release from captivity.  It places the full weight upon the deliver to merely make the ‘proclamation of freedom’ and then the captives are automatically freed.

The truer perspective is retained in the quotation found in the New Testament of what would have been a more ancient Old Testament text in existence historically from before the time of Christ.  That reference conveys more of the truth of the matter making it a process which involves the captive person’s performance of compliance and changed behavior.

Luke 4:18   “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,”

The preaching of the gospel plan of deliverance from sin requires active participation upon the part of the captive.  He must exercise faith in Christ, repent of the sins which keep him captive, be baptized unto Christ, and receive the confirming spirit of the Holy Ghost.  Then he may be removed from captivity of sin and may remain so unencumbered by living the righteous life.

1073

Promises of God Are In Him Yea:

2 Corinthians 1:19-20  “For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.  For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.”

Prophet:

Deuteronomy 18: 15-22  “¶ The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.  And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.  I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.  And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.  But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.  And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?  When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.”

1 Nephi 10:4  “Yea, even six hundred years from the time that my father left Jerusalem, a prophet would the Lord God raise up among the Jews—even a Messiah, or, in other words, a Savior of the world.”

1 Nephi 22:20-21  “And the Lord will surely prepare a way for his people, unto the fulfilling of the words of Moses, which he spake, saying: A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass that all those who will not hear that prophet shall be cut off from among the people.  And now I, Nephi, declare unto you, that this prophet of whom Moses spake was the Holy One of Israel; wherefore, he shall execute judgment in righteousness.”

Matthew 21:46  “But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet.”

3 Nephi 4:30  “30 And they did rejoice and cry again with one voice, saying: May the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, protect this people in righteousness, so long as they shall call on the name of their God for protection.”

1081

Prototype:

Lecture 7:9  “ . . . But to be a little more particular, let us ask—Where shall we find a prototype into whose likeness we may be assimilated, in order that we may be made partakers of life and salvation? or, in other words, where shall we find a saved being? for if we can find a saved being, we may ascertain without much difficulty what all others must be in order to be saved. We think that it will not be a matter of dispute, that two beings who are unlike each other cannot both be saved; for whatever constitutes the salvation of one will constitute the salvation of every creature which will be saved; and if we find one saved being in all existence, we may see what all others must be, or else not be saved. We ask, then, where is the prototype? or where is the saved being? We conclude, as to the answer of this question, there will be no dispute among those who believe the bible, that it is Christ: all will agree in this, that he is the prototype or standard of salvation; or, in other words, that he is a saved being. . . . “

Quetzalcoatl:  The white bearded God of Mexico’s ancient peoples was indeed most likely Jesus Christ. The following is a paragraph written by Milton R. Hunter.

“Throughout Mexico the "White Bearded God" was known by the name of Quetzalcoatl (Ket-sal-co-watl). In Yucatan he was called Kukulcan (Koo-kul-con). Viracocha (Vera-kocha) was the name given to him by the Indians of Peru; and other Indian tribes called him by various names. By whatever name he appeared in Indian traditions, he always had the same characteristics, and there was a general agreement in the various traditions regarding his accomplishments. Those people who are familiar with the teachings of the Book of Mormon and Indian traditions can readily recognize the Fair God of ancient America as being none other than Jesus Christ.”

(Archaeology and The Book of Mormon, p. 29)

There is both the positive and the negative aspects of Quetzalcoatl and his worship.  The Book of Mormon people who remained had turned whatever truth of Christ into a corruption of pagan human sacrifice.  Thus though there is to be seen ‘images’ of Christ in this ‘white bearded God’, there is also much corruption.  It is the same story of most all ‘pagan’ Gods.  The start out as the truth God and as the corruption of men and Satan evolves, they are transformed into false Gods.  This is similar to what likely happened concerning such Gods as Zeus of the Greeks and Ra of the Egyptians.  Once these people, being the descendants of Noah, had the true knowledge and understanding of God.  But they corrupted it with their own vain imaginations and guidance of Satan into what their carnal natures desired their God to be.  The evolution of pagan religion fell from that of true religion, and that is why certain aspects of such have a semblance of the true God in them.  This is how Lucifer works to thwart God’s work.

“In the valley of Mexico, I had the thrilling opportunity to visit the temple, erected by these people, to the great God whom they called Quetzalcoatl. I have found in the traditions of all Indian tribes, from the far north to the far south, this tradition, that a long time ago their fathers were visited by a fair God, who wrought miracles among them, blessed them, and left them, but promised to come back again. He does live. He not only lived then, but we have the testimony, in these latter-days, of the Prophet Joseph Smith, fulfilling the promises of the angels who said to the men who saw Christ ascend: "Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing into heaven? Know ye not that this same Jesus shall in like manner descend again?"” (Sermons and Missionary Services of Melvin Joseph Ballard, p. 187)

Certainly the truth of the Book of Mormon clearly establishes that Jesus Christ did come amongst the ancient inhabitants of the Americas.  And he did walk amongst them and bless them.  Why wouldn’t the remaining culture of those great civilizations still have some recollection of the event, corrupted by time, man and Lucifer as it might be?

3 Nephi 11:8-10  “And it came to pass, as they understood they cast their eyes up again towards heaven; and behold, they saw a Man descending out of heaven; and he was clothed in a white robe; and he came down and stood in the midst of them; and the eyes of the whole multitude were turned upon him, and they durst not open their mouths, even one to another, and wist not what it meant, for they thought it was an angel that had appeared unto them.  And it came to pass that he stretched forth his hand and spake unto the people, saying:  Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world.”

Between the Book of Mormon’s own text and another book by Milton R. Hunter entitled, ‘Christ in Ancient America’, a further and greater understanding and appreciation can be obtained of Jesus Christ’s visit to America.  That is the positive.  The negative is that as men study the corrupted worship of this God such ancient American civilizations, they find that it has evolved into to the corruption which all such pagan religions have gone, into human sacrifice and many other false practices and concepts.
