             CHAPTER 3

John the Baptist preaches and baptizes—Jesus is baptized and God acclaims him as his Son—His genealogy back to Adam is set forth.

John the Baptist preaches the baptism of repentance—Jesus is baptized by John and God proclaims his bloved son—Jesus' human genealogy is presented all the way back to Adam showing forth that direct relationship between Jesus the second Adam of the atonement and Adam of the fall. (NOTE: This genealogy is of necessity that of Mary Christ's mother as that is the only genealogy which is his earthly inherited blood line which enabled him to suffer death.)
  1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and aHerod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,
  2 aAnnas and Caiaphas being the bhigh priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
  3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the abaptism of repentance for the bremission of sins;
  4 aAs it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The bvoice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
  5 Every avalley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
  6 And all flesh shall see the asalvation of God.
  7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O ageneration of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
  8 Bring forth therefore afruits bworthy of crepentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, dWe have eAbraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
  9 And now also the aaxe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good bfruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
  10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
  11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two acoats, let him bimpart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.
  12 Then came also apublicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
  13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed ayou.
  14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any afalsely; and be bcontent with your cwages.
  15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men amused in their hearts of bJohn, whether he were the Christ, or not;
  16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall abaptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
  17 Whose afan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his bgarner; but the cchaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
  18 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
  19 But aHerod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,
  20 Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.
  21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being abaptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
  22 And the aHoly Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a bdove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

Jesus' Ancestry after the Flesh, of His Mother Mary

Many debate the genealogies of Jesus. Simply stated, the genealogy in Matthew was presented forth as that of his 'male' royal ancestry obtained through his legally adopting father Joseph. By that genealogy he had right to claim to be the King of the Jews. And the genealogy in Luke is his genealogy of the human flesh all the way back to Adam, showing forth his human ancestry by which he inherited the ability of death. Both those genealogies deal with that of this world, the worldly royal genealogy of this earth and the descend of his flesh of corruption of this fallen second estate. Neither set forth his ancestry of the things of God, being the only begotten Son of God in the flesh, nor his heirship genealogy to the promised covenant of the priesthood and of the right of man to administer in the things of God according to the plan of redemption.

  23 And aJesus himself began to be about bthirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of cJosepha, which was the son of Helib,

Better Translated
Rearranged for clarity and without the translator's supplied words this verse would better be read and understood as follows:

   "And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, (being as was supposed the son of Joseph), he [Jesus] was of Heli,"

In terms of his bloodline linage of the flesh, Jesus was not the son of Joseph. His linage was of Heli the father of Mary and thence back to Adam the first man. That was his earthly linage of the flesh which enabled him the ability and/or capacity to die being of human origin. In Jewish genealogies it is proper to list the male line. Jesus' male line of the this mortal flesh skips to his mother's father Heli as God the Father was his immediate father from whom he had obtained the power over death to resurrect.

 23a being (as was suppossed) the son of Joseph Why the translators placed parrenthesis merely about the three words 'as was supposed' and not about the entire supposed phrase has be cause for misinterpretation of over the ages. The entire phrase, 'being as was supposed the son joseph' belongs in parrenthesis, thus setting it entirely apart from the relavent genealogy presented here by Luke. Since genealogy is not stated in terms of materal descent, and since Jesus was truely only the son of Mary and not of Joseph, Jesus' paternal mortal genealogy would be stated to have next in line to him Mary's father Heli.
 23a which was the son of Heli The italized words 'the son' is not a part of the original text of Luke. It was added in by the translators. It does not belong and makes it more difficult to read. Simple state, Jesus was of Heli, not of Joseph.

The Curse and Ability to Die
Death is not the natural state of eternity. The inherited traits from God is to have the ability to live forever, to be in a continuous state of eternal life. That is the natural state of eternity. It was by Adam that death came into the world. For this man Jesus, the Son of God, to be able to die, to have that capacity, he would have to obtain it from some source. The linage of that critical capacity to die, that curse of mortal man, was obtained from Mary and her father Heli. And it traces itself all the way back to Adam and the fall of man. Thus Luke did set forth the entire genealogy of Jesus' mortality, all the way back to Adam, he by whom the fall and death did come into the world. In terms of the gospel to the gentiles, this is the great message, that Jesus the Son of God with the power of immortallity, did come into the world to die, that men might through him live. Only he could unlock that door of passage, having both the capacity to die a mortal death and the ability to resurrect. The two given genealogies of Jesus are so different between that of Matthew and Luke, that they could not be the same Genealogy of just the earthly adopted father of Jesus. They are two separate genealogies. The one is that of Joseph and the royal house of David back to Judah and the other is that of Mary or Jesus back to Adam, Adam who brought about death which Jesus was so born to overcome.
