16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is awisdom. Let him
that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the
number of a mana; and his number
is Six hundred threescore and six.

18a it is the number of a man
The number of the beast of 666 is that of a man. Now much speculation has
come of who this might be. Some have made of it a 'positional' rather than
an individual marking and thus some have speculated that it may be the Pope
of the Catholic Church, whomever he might be at any given time. And there is
some such evidence which may point to this though of course the Catholic
Church does deny it. Others look to this beast of a man to be a specific
individual who is the 'anti-christ' yet to come and that his marking will
be distinct and one of definite purposeful distinction unmistaken and not
refuted. At any rate he is the servant of the dragon or Satan, to do
Satan's bidding with men as Lucifer not having a body of his own must so
rely upon man or men under his charge to carry forth his evil works amoung
the kindreds of the earth.
