Old Testament Commentary - Numbers 2

by Don R. Hender

This census taken is the count of men of war, men of the armies of Israel out of each of the tribes with the exception of Levi which was not counted as to war. Thus old men and male children are not counted, neither are any women and female children, and none of the tribe of Levi is counted. All totaled, it is considered that Israel's camp contained some 2 to 3 million people or even more.

Upon the East, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun

The Camp of Judah consisted of the last three born sons of Leah, Judah the fourth born to Leah and fourth born over all, Issachar the fifth born to Leah and the 9th born over all and Zebulun the sixth born of Leah and the 10th born over all. In this camp there was no question as to which Son of Leah was the senior son.

JUDAH
- Nahshon the son of Amminadab Is Judah's Captain -
(74,600 Men)

3 And on the east side toward the rising of the suna shall they of the standard of the camp of Judah pitch throughout their armies: and Nahshon the son of Amminadab shall be captain of the children of Judah.
4 And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundreda.
4a threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred Judah's 74,600 men of war seem to represent the concept that the tribe of Judah was the most fruitful of the tribes of Israel. Even when both sons of Joseph are totaled together, there seems to be an almost even representation giving Judah, the fourth born son some headstart over the 11th born Joseph as the sons of Joseph total together some 72,700 men of war, a mere diference of 1,900 men. It was Joseph who gave his second son the name of Ephraim, meaning fruitfull and it was Joseph who received the blessing of the fruitful bough whose branches run over the wall, meaning the ocean to the Western Hemisphere.
But Mulek, the royal son of King Zedekiah also made it to America. Now was Mulek a part of the 'fruitful bough of Judah' also running over the wall? Or was Mulek to be counted as the legal and rightful seed of Ephraim and Joseph as per the consideration of Obed being the son of the Ephrathite, Ephraimite, House of Mahlon and Elimelech? Upon the West, Ephraim, Manasseh and Benjamin

Of interest Joseph had no land or camp directed under him but under his two sons Ephraim and Manasseh. Joseph was the firstborn son of Rachel, Jacob's wife of choice. Joseph was the heir of the covenant blessings by whom those blessing were preserved (D&C 27:10). Manasseh was Joseph's first born son, but Ephraim received the blessings of the Covenant of the Firstborn and was thus the recognized lead of the camp of Rachel, and in fact the whole of Israel as Israel was the name given on down to Ephraim. Benjamin, Joseph's brother, was the second born of Rachel, and the 12 born of the sons of Jacob overall. But Benjamin was under the leadership of Ephraim, the anointed Firstborn of Israel and of the Lord (See Genesis 48 (JST) and Jeremiah 31:9).

Upon the North, Dan, Asher and Naphtali

Dan was the fifth born of the sons of Jacob by Bilhah unto Rachel. Dan was Bilhah's first born son. Asher was the 8th born son over all, the second born of Zilpah unto Leah, but is here grouped in with the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid and in the camp of Dan. Naphtali was Bilhah's second born son and the 6th born unto Jacob over all. Dan is placed as this camps leader making up a second 'camp' unto Rachel is one considered this to be the ordering of the arrangement.

31 All they that were numbered in the camp of Dan were an hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred. They shall go hindmost with their standards.
