Old Testament Commentary - Psalms 70

by Don R. Hender

It would be good to know just when each of the Psalms of David were first written/performed and to further know the circumstance and whether David is the originator or the repeater or applier of the psalms, it message and words. Though the psalm has application to various times in David's life such as when he was on the run from Saul, or when he had conflicts with his son Absalom and the Jews, or even as a young lad upon the fields with the flock or even sing before Saul. One can image such applications in all such incidents.

       CHAPTER 70

David proclaims: Let God be magnified

David proclaims: Jehovah by the meaning of his name given of God, Jehoshua/Jesus and states 'Let God be magnified'.
~ J E H O S H U A ~
JEH - Jehovah
oshua - Delivers
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance.
1 MAKE haste, O God, to deliver mea; make haste to help me, O LORD.
1a Make haste, O God, to deliver me [JEHOSHUA/JESUS] Who has not felt the need for the Lord's help and deliverance upon an immediate order? Whether of a real need in terms of survival of degree of need, we have all had our times when we have sought the Lord and requested 'haste' and immediate response. To us it did seem of great importance and that we were in great need. The Lord hears and recognizes all such pleas unto him. Yet he will not so answer each with such immediacy as the request might seem to demand. The Lord who sees all, the 'eternal now' ever before his eyes, does see the long range beyond our own immediate vision of self percieved need. We must rest assured that the Lord will do what is in our best interest and give answer in the due season thereof. We must trust in the Lord. And though at times much suffering may be experienced, we must continue to pray unto him and trust what he has done is according to him mind and will concerning us and not just what we may demand upon a 'moment's notice'.
2 Let them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul: let them be turned backward, and put to confusion, that desire my hurt.
3 Let them be turned back for a reward of their shame that say, Aha, aha.
4 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified.
5 But I am poor and needy: make ahaste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer; O LORD, make no tarrying.
