1 THE word of the LORD which came unto Zephaniah the son
of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah,
in the days of
aJosiaha the son of
Amon, king of Judah.
2 I will utterly aconsume all
things from off the land, saith the LORD.
3 I will consume man and beast; I will consume the
fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the
astumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man
from off the land, saith the LORD.

1a in the days of Josiah
Zephaniah was a prophet in the days of good King Josiah and in the youth of
Lehi of the Book of Mormon. And though King Josiah is about bring to pass a
religious reform and return unto the Lord God Jehovah, it would not be long,
that is during the reign of one of Josiah's sons, Zedekiah, that the warnings
of the Lord's destruction given by Zephaniah would be fulfilled and Lehi
himself would be one of the prophets of that day of that destruction and then
also further testify to the people of it. And in Lehi's day it did occur. This
destruction may also be seen as a type and a shadow of that destruction which
is to come upon the wicked in that great day of the Lord, at his Second
Coming in order to cleanse the earth and prepare it for that Millennial Day
of a thousand years. The Lord's hand is mighty against the wicked and we ought
to learn from history that as sure as that the Lord has done it in the past,
so also he will bring destruction against the wicked again in that day which
is shortly ahead of us, that day of great destruction of the wicked of the
earth.
