Davy Family of Liskeard
prepared by Don R. Hender
Like may families across Cornwall, the Davy family, often spelt Davey,
is located in many places throughout Cornwall. From the 'Dooms Day Record' of the Norman Conquest
in 1066 A.D., it is said that the name Davy was first found in Cornwall. Actually the name's origin
was is Wales and it was used widely as a Welsh family name of favor related to 'David'. One of the
most famous bearers of this personal name in Wales was David ap Gryffydd, the last Prince of Northern
Wales, who was executed c. 1276 by King Edward I of England. Actually the particular surname Davy is
from the personal name David, which means 'darling or friend'; much like the Hebrew name and meaning
associated with the name David in the Bible, which is 'my beloved'.
The variations of the name are many. They includes such as: Davy, Davey, Davie, Daivey, Daivy, Daivie,
Dayvy, Dayvie, Dayvey, Devy, Devie, and so on and so forth. Sometimes variations in the name may denote
separation in family. More often it is found that the variation is no more than a recorders written
difference and as many working classes did not write or read the difference was left up to how the
recorder thought to spell the name. Also the uniqueness in the differences in writing often leaves
the transcription up to the ability of the transcriber to read the writing, which if often old, smugged,
or faint or even with little curles at the end that the pinman has made that really mean nothing at
all but are taken to be an 'e' or some other added letter at the end.
In Cornwall our Hender family ancestry
presently appears to go back to connect by marriage to two Davy/Davey families of Cornwall. The Liskeard
family of Davy married into the Moon family of Liskeard when Mary Ann Fitze married Nicholas Moon in 1794.
And the Philleigh family of Davey/Davy married into the Collett family of Philleigh when Ann Davey
married William Collett in 1804. Of interest is that since the Hender family relates back to the
Hendower family of Wales and the princes of Powys makes the connections of some courious interest.
Whether the name has moved from where to where seems of little import as it is all part of the same
'Celtic' family of Scot, Irish, Welsh, and Cornish, and in such places it is found with at least two
varying coats of arms associated with the name Davy.
Here we will proceed to give the family group information concerning the Davy family of Liskeard.
As stated, they are the family who by marriage connections became a part of our Moon family of
Liskeard ancestry. In this presentation we begin with the oldest such Davy family and proceed to
the last such family whose daughter Jane Davy married James Fitze, whose great granddaughter Many
Ann Fitch married our Nicholas Moon.
