Our Davy Family of the Philleigh Area
DAVEY—DAVY: The surname Davey or Davy has a number of various possible
spellings which includes Davis, Davies, Davie, Daivy, Daivey, Daivie, Dayvy, Dayvie, Dayvey,
Devy, Devie, and of course Davey and Davy. And when a 'Davey' family becomes difficult to
detect, it is wise to suspect any such name variation needs to be looked for. The name
is a patronymic surname of Hebrew origins, and much associated with Wales. It means 'the
son of David', from the Hebrew male given name meaning "beloved". In one reference the
name is said to first have appeared in Cornwall about the time of William and the Norman
Conquest. At least that's were they first found it. It is an ancient name for sure and
it the name of the patron Saint of Wales, St. David, who Nona of Altarnun was the mother
of, which dates it back to the 6th century. There have been two Scotish king by the name
of David and one of the most famous bearers of the name in Wales was David ap Gryffydd,
the last Prince of Northern Wales who was exeuted c. 1276 by King Edward of England. Even
our 'Hendower' name goes but to such as David de Hendower of Wales and from thence into
the Walsh Princes of Powys. Oddly enough that we not only have two 'Davey' surname families
in our ancestry but of late my father's sister, Aunt May married a Paul Davis. I don't know
whether his family lines have connections to the 'Davey' family lines? It is possible.

Richard and Margery Davey Family ~ Fifth Great Grandparents ~
James and Anne Davey Family ~ Fourth Great Grandparents ~James married in Veryan where the name variation of Davies/Davis was in force. Though James signed the marriage entry himself as James Davey with a likely twist at the end, it was taken and entered by the clergy clerk as DAVIS. But there is a note to the effect as to how James signed his own name at the bottom of the extracted OPC marriage entry noting he signed as Daveys. The only other proposed canidate for this marriage is a 15/16 year old, baptism 1771 who has no children by Anne who they kill off in the 1790s without a solid burial entry in order to let their 'James Davis' to also marry a second wife, Susanna Thomas by who he has 5 children.
