Hender of Helston

Compiled and Annotated by Don R. Hender

Helston is in West Cornwall and is one of the four 'coinage towns' established in Cornwall for the measuring of the metal of the mines. It is some distance from Bodmin where William Hender was born, the son of John Hender and Agnes Rescorla. To view the details of that family and its ancestry click to the Bodmin Pedigree Page. William is listed as an Ostler or Hostler and often as a servant. An Hostler is one who takes care of the horses, he is the 'groom' or stableman who is 'employed' in a stable to take care of the horses. William lived on Coinagehall Street in each of the census records and could have cared for the horses and carriages of a nearby stable, perhaps even the Duchy Livery Stables.
Certainly here are two more William Hender and Elizabeth families of the time frame of so many in the county, but these ought not to confuse the issue with all those of eastern Cornwall for they are of the west though originally out of Bodmin.
