Our Moon Cousins #4 - Cornelius Moone/Mohun & Joane Bowden of Liskeard
Our fourth numbered group of Moon cousins are those who did continue
on the name of Cornelius Moon and others such as are from the family of Cornelius Moon/Mohun and
Joane Bowden. I will first remind us of the family of Cornelius Moon/Mohun and Joane Bowden, and
then I will present the various cousin families which descend from them. There are a few small
little details which work together to help identify this family. Besides being the only fit in
the matter, one of the telling details is that matter of a family 'common' burial site, it being
the Church of St Keyne. Though of Liskeard, and as often the baptism are done in Liskeard but
also at St Keyne, the unique feature is from the burial of this Cornelius Moon/Mohun, the family
has uniquely held to the common burial site of St Keyne. That is one item by which this Moon
family may be looked to, were they buried at St Keyne? I suppose that is in part becuase of St
Keyne being more local between Duloe and Liskeard and also that St Keyne is nearer to where this
Moon family habitate than is Liskeard city where the parish church is. In fact where the 'parish
limits of Liskeard are actually surrounds little St Keyne on three sides, the other side is bound
by Duloe no less (see the provided map-click the map and see some of the known moon family 'haunts'
of this Moon family). And the common Moon family habitations are to the east by
southeast of St Keyne and are nearer both St Keyne and even Morval than they are to the Liskeard
church, which is in the north of the Liskeard parish boundries. The second 'little detail' that
helps to unite this family is their 'class rank', that being of the level of 'Gentlemen' and were
'farmers' often called yeomen but more appropriately 'Gentleman Farmers'. When the two sons of Edward
and Cornelius marry, their marriage records both reflect that 'social rank' of 'Gentlemen'. This is
carried through the family in their marriages as the marriage with the Slade family of Gorran, the
'family of Body', though using the alias of Oliver, and even the marriage with
Bowden itself. Perhaps the distinction of a Gentleman farmer can be helped to understand how land is
held in England. Land is often held, assined and even controlled by the crown. Large estates are
parcelled out and can be 'leased on life-time 99 year leases' and held by a family over the course
of 'generations'. Hawaii has such a system where you often cannot own the land you live on but you
can lease it for you life-time, so esentially it is 'yours'. It is the differance between the long-term
tenant 'farmer' and the short term and hired farmers. Such 'longterm' tenant Gentlemen farmers can
be quite wealthy and high up the social ranking ladder. They are next to the 'landed-gentry' and often
are both. That is they can 'owe' some of their lands and lease others to increase their own 'estate'
size. Well, enough about that.

* These daughter's marriages are yet to be 'proven' but do seem to follow the year after their
father's death in 1767 so of some suspecion. Grace is older, but supplies a connection line to
Fitze family.
** Unconfirmed but in the case of Jane Watts her age fits with that of Jane Moon.
