NORTHY / NORTHEY: It seems obvious that the name comes from the word meaning 'north'. In today's form it is the 'Englo' or Saxon version of the spelling of the word that has prevailed and with the 'y' sounding ending it is thought to refer to either the word meaning of 'eg'='island' or 'ge'=enclosure or even 'ea'='river'. That a pick, but which or whatever, it would seem quite possible that the name could well have a number of original family sources which have come dowm to the one name. That is there is many a place location after which one could be referenced as being a 'Northey' of—'de Northy'. And is seems appropriate that our Northey or Northy family is located in the 'north' arena of Cornwall.

There are a number of Northy/Northey families about the Altarnun around 1700. It is likely that one of those families is where Elizabeth Northy comes from who married Thomas Hender. One particular family will be singled out until further information proves otherwise.      ~ Altarnun church of St Nonna, St David's mother.

^ Some make this William the son of William and Sibella Northy, which Sibella, widow of
William Northy did die and was buried 5 November 1679 at Altarnun.
* Some make this unnamed Northey daughter to be Sybella, as it to them seems to fit the
last born child. Yet to making Elizabeth of this family she who married Thomas Hender
and mothered his six children, it would be a better age fit for her to be a younger
Elizabeth Northey than she who was born 1690.

Nevil Northey and Grace Eare/Earel

Perhaps one of the more telling features about the 16th through 18th century, and even into the 19th century families of Cornwall, is the unspoken tradition of the use of family names. That is children were most often named after their ancestors, parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts, etc. And any one who has studied the records of the Altarnun area during this perticular period of time, late 1600s - early 1700s, will recognized the fact that there are two families headed by fathers named Nevil/Nevile/ Neville/Nevill Northey. One such family is that of Nevil Northey and Grace Eare, which fortunity is one which is currently best preserved in the OPC Cornwall parish's records. And the first two children of this family, a boy and a girl, are named William and Lore. Not that William alone is so unique of a 'family name' for I'd think, from my experience, that at least some 50% of the families of this extended period has at least one ancestor by the name of William. But in combination with the quite unique name of 'Lore', it seems to speak to just who were the ancestors of this family. And that is particularly William and Lore Northey who would be considered as the parents of this particular Nevil Northey, who does not get around to naming one of his sons Nevil until the aparent last child and son of the family, that is after loosing a third child and son Nevill Northey to an early childhood death.

* This Elizabeth Hender would be the daughter of Edward Hender and Elizabeth Wadge. As the
sister of this Nevil Northey is considered to be that Elizabeth Northy who married Thomas
Hender, Edward Hender's likely brother, it would not be right for this Elizabeth Hender
to be Thomas Hender's and Elizabeth Northy's daughter, which she was not as she married
John Venning. But the Elizabeth Hender that Richard married could be Edward Hender's
daughter and there would not be any blood line problems, only a near 'in-law'
relationship existing.
