In the Days of Peleg
by Don R. Hender
There is no argument or question that the Bible
speaks the literal truth when it comes to the events recorded to have happened 'in the
days of Peleg'. "And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg: for in
his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan." ~ Genesis
10:25
While geologists and scientists will readily agree that the continental plates were once
one land 'pangea' and have so drifted apart according to their theories of continental
drift and plate techtonics, they will strongly disagree as to the actual timing of such
events and perhaps even exactly how the divisions were made and occurred. And
of course, science who is just scratching at the surfaces of scientific knowledge and
understandings of the things of the world and the universe, will boastfully state
without reservation or question that hundreds of thousands of years have gone by since
the earth was once one land and that perhaps it has happened a number of times, as if
they were there and living then. Yet they will openly deny the truth of God's scriptures,
which did first report such an event, by first stating that the Bible could not mean
that the land surfaces of the earth were divided in the days of Peleg, a mere few
thousand years ago. And even those who have faith in Christianity will interpret the
scripture into their own twisted meanings such as 'it not meaning the land was divided',
but either surveyed or that the people were just being dispursed into groups throughout
the land, or some such personal take on that matter.
Now I do not know exactly how the earth was arranged before the day of Noah and the days
of Peleg when it was divided. And there is not a single scientist who does either despite
all of their vain imaginings and deduced speculations, who are but puffed up by their
own intellectualism and supposed depths of knowledge. Their pride but keeps them from
the truth and their egos do not let them find God who is great and knows more than any
man. With all their learning they have failed to obtain humility and the knowledge of
God. Certainly, such persons of none belief but laugh at the LDS scripture which reports
such events at the Savior's second coming and the introduction of the millennium which
states:
"And he shall utter his voice out of Zion, and he shall speak from Jerusalem, and his
voice shall be heard among all people; And it shall be a voice as the voice of many
waters, and as the voice of a great thunder, which shall break down the mountains, and
the valleys shall not be found. He shall command the great deep, and it shall be driven
back into the north countries, and the islands shall become one land; And the land of
Jerusalem and the land of Zion [which is America] shall be turned back into their own
place, and the earth shall be like as it was in the days before it was divided. And the
Lord, even the Savior, shall stand in the midst of his people, and shall reign over all
flesh." ~ Doctrine and Covenants 133:21-25
Now those verses stand in the midst of more information concerning those days to shortly
come and it makes for good reading and understanding regarding such things. And as so
dymaically stated, it is obvious that the movements of the earth and such great events
can happen in very short periods of time when commanded by the voice of God. Today
science often considers these matters as measured in today's status quo of such fractions
of inches per year that they have slowed down to currently. But certainly the American
ancient scripture would further support the dynamics of events happening in much shorter
durations of time.
There are two such instances which are recorded in the Book of Mormon which do support
the dynamics of the earth's movements. The first is at that time of Mahonri Moriancumr
and his brother named Jared. It was round about the time of the great tower of Babel,
and not much removed from the days of Peleg. In short, the separating bodies of land
were still in motion and commotion when they who would become known as the Jaredites
did return to this land of America to once again populate it after the universal flood
of Noah. And that flood was a worldwide universal event as well.
And the other is when the great land changing events of destruction which occurred
shortly before the Lord came to America to visit the people here after his death and
resurrection in the land of Jerusalem.
Thus there are these two testimonies in the Book of Mormon that can add to the matters
of the earth concerning both the flood of Noah and also the dividing of the land. The
first is quite direct and pointed. In Moroni's abridgment of the Jaredite record, he
paraphrase and/or quotes from Ether, when Ether was giving a recounting of things as
they were to the Jaredites in hopes of bring them back to the faith. Thus Moroni wrote
concerning Ether:
"For behold, they rejected all the words of Ether; for he truly told them of all things,
from the beginning of man; and that after the waters had receded from off the face
of this land it became a choice land above all other lands, a chosen land of the
Lord; wherefore the Lord would have that all men should serve him who dwell upon the
face thereof; And that it was the place of the New Jerusalem, which should come down
out of heaven, and the holy sanctuary of the Lord." ~ Ether 13:2-3
Ether was the last Jaredite prophet on this the American land prior to the Jaredite
extinction about 600 B.C. And as stated, Ether spoke of the times of the flood of
Noah when he made the statement as to what happened 'after the waters had receded from
off the face of this land'. That means on both sides of the globe, in the east and in
the west, had Noah's flood covered the land. Thus the Book of Mormon sustains that
there was such a flood of Noah which covered the face of the earth, the Western
Hemisphere as well as the Eatern Hemisphere.
And then as an added indirect evidence as to the commotion of the ocean in the times
still following the lands dividing, the Book of Mormon speaks to the subject as to just
how rough and difficult ocean travel was at the time. Generally one must presume that
the Lord had the Jaredites build submersible bardges rather than sailing ships for
some very good reason, and that it wasn't just to toss the people about in the sea.
Regarding the 344 days of travel in the eight bardges the Book of Mormon states:
"And it came to pass that the Lord God caused that there should be a furious wind blow
upon the face of the waters, towards the promised land; and thus they were tossed upon
the waves of the sea before the wind. And it came to pass that they were many times
buried in the depths of the sea, because of the mountain waves which broke upon them,
and also the great and terrible tempests which were caused by the fierceness of the
wind. And it came to pass that when they were buried in the deep there was no water that
could hurt them, their vessels being tight like unto a dish, and also they were tight
like unto the ark of Noah; therefore when they were encompassed about by many waters
they did cry unto the Lord, and he did bring them forth again upon the top of the waters.
And it came to pass that the wind did never cease to blow towards the promised land
while they were upon the waters; and thus they were driven forth before the wind. . . .
And thus they were driven forth, three hundred and forty and four days upon the water.
And they did land upon the shore of the promised land. . ." ~ Ether 6:5-8 &
10-11 {see also Ether 2:23-25 & Ether 3:2-3}
As the rates of motion were still at a more rapid rate after the initial land division
in those days, the seas were much rougher with mountain waves to navigate. No sailing
ship was safe on such an ocean in such commotion. Thus the Lord had them build water
tight bardges and thence he could cause a continuous wind to push their motion across
the ocean the some 344 days that it would take for such a wind blown crossing would take
to occur. The indirect evidence here being the roughness of the seas caused by the
land divisions still proceeding at an accelerated rate.
Note until the time of the end of the Life of Jesus Christ did the lands finally slow
to the mere inch per year rates of today which finally with a land shake bump, the
plates from the east colided with that land of the west which cause the vast land
reshaping destruction described in the Book of Mormon concerning those events. But the
details concerning those events are another story to be told concerning such as the
Mapping of the Book of Mormon and what it was like before and after that greatest of
land destruction within recorded time. That is at least in recorded time according to
the record of the Book of Mormon.
You see the scriptural 'stories' do tie in together; the great flood of Noah, the
dividing of the land in the days of Peleg, the crossing of the wild ocean in the days
of the Jaredites and the extreme destruction which occured just prior to the Saviour's
visit to the Americas. The events actually did occur and their effects were not just
once and done, but they had the long range effects which are furhter recorded in
scripture. And they again at the coming of the Lord there will be that great land
movement which is recorded above by the power of his voice that will unite the land
again as one land.
