Quinn Family of Martin County North CarolinaFrom meager fragments of information one is able to put together a Quinn family of Martin County, North Carolina living there from the late 1700s to and through the mid 1800s. Beginning, earlier, but not yet documented, at least as can be found, is the family of John Quinn and Mary Nicholson. In 1826 the Will of John Nicholson is recorded in which it bequeths an inheritance by John Nicholson to his two grandsons, Henry Quinn and Calvin D. Quinn. And thus the meager documentation was began. Later, as an adult, Calvin D. Quinn is baptized as an adult upon such recording of the event included that his parents names were John and Mary Quinn. Thus the parents of Henry Quinn and Calvin Quinn are thus identified as John Quinn and Mary Nicholson, the daughter of John Nicholson for how else would John Nicholson be the grandfather to Henry and Calvin D. Quinn?Next, through a sequence of decade spaced census records of Martin county of 1840 through 1860, the family of Henry Quinn and his wife Basha an be deduced. First in 1840, where but the head of house is named, we find Henry Quinn aged 20-30 years of age with a wife of corresponding age range. There are two sons less than 5 years and one daughter less than 5 and another between 5-10 years. This would suggest that Henry would be in his late 20s and that his wife would be in her mid to late 20s. There are no other Quinn families recorded in that census of 1840 in the area of Martin, North Carolina. Later evidence would suggest that Calvin D. Quinn did not marry and have a family, at least in that range of time. In the next two census records more details of this Quinn family are surmised though Henry does not again appear in either the 1850 or 1860 records. In 1850 there is Basha Quinn as a housekeeper and four daughters. Her husband Henry is not there as neither are the two sons recorded upon the 1840 census. The oldest daughter Mary matches the eldest daughter of the 1840 census and the next daughter Adaline matches the other 1840 recorded daughter. The other two new daughters fit in accordingly. Thus one deduces that the women folk are at home while Henry Quinn and perhaps his two sons if living are out. In the 1860 Census Basha Quinn is listed as a widow in a household of females, two of her earlier daughters are gone but they are replaced by two more younger daughters, Nicey Quinn and Susan Quinn ages 10 and 6. Basha must have been near delivery of Nicey at the time of the 1850 census. As for Calvin D. Quinn, he turned up on the 1850 Washington county census single age 35 and if that is correct he was born about 1815 and age about 11 at the time of his grandfather John Nicholson's will of 1826. Calvin D. Quinn does marry as recorded on license number 20, he marries Martha, Mary Simmons on 1 May 1851 in Grace Church, Plymouth. Basha appeared at age 37 in 1850 thus a birth about 1813 and perhaps at least a like birth date and age for her husband Henry Quinn. That would make him about age 13 or older at the time of his grandfather's will. Nicey Ann Quinn marries Henry Lafayette Swanner in her early 20s, perhaps about 1873.
Thus, though collected a piece here and a piece there, so is formed the family of
Nicey Ann Quinn, the first wife of Henry Lafayette Swanner, making them my one of
my four sets of great grandparents.
