Unraveling the Rowe Family

a deduction by Don R. Hender

It has been some time coming to find out enough about Elizabeth Rowe, wife of William Hender, Clock and Watchmaker, to at least set forth a feasible family dynamic which may be supported by the records at hand. There have been so many Rowe families, that just 'asuming' a near fit has not been an acceptable course. That which is theoretically known of Elizabeth Rowe has not been easily supported by the facts. For instance, she is recorded in their marriage record at Callington said to be 'of Callington'. But no such record supports that. Yet one key issue is to attempt to settle the age/birth of Elizabeth Rowe so as to search for her birth/baptism.

The Age / Birth of Elizabeth Rowe

After or even during William Hender's career of being a watch and clockmaker of Callington, the evidence on the 1841 Census is that the couple were members of the one street community known as Venterdon associated with the Parish of Stoke Climsland. The link to Venterdon displays the 1841 census of the community of Venterdon with William and Elizabeth living there are that time though their ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years per the 1841 census common instrutions. And below are the couple's burial records and their then recored ages at the time of burial. Also below is William Hender's certified death entry record which confirms that the death dates of burial were accurate.

Burial Record of William and Elizabeth Hender of Venterdon
    _________________________________________________________________________________ | Parish | Event | Firstname | Surname | Date | Year | Age | Notes | | Stokeclimsland | Burial | William | HENDER | 08-Aug | 1848 | 60 | Venterdon | | Stokeclimsland | Burial | Elizabeth | HENDER | 14-Feb | 1850 | 57 | Venterdon |

OPC Parish Burial Records

The OPC transcriptions compares well to the Callington Heritage records. Transcribers make errors, even the same one. Venterden is Venterdon. William's age 60 matches his certified death entry and Elizabeth's would likewise be presumed she was 57 at death and born (1850-57=1793) in 1792/3 with no baptism record acceptable before that dating.

Now the critical information of the certified copy reads as follows:
When and Where died: 5 August 1848 Venterdon Stoke Climsland.
Name and surname: William Hender. Sex: Male. Age: 60 years.
Occupation: Watch and Clock Maker.
Cause of death: Inflamation in the Chest; Not Certified.
Signiture, description and residence of informant: Wm Nottle, In Attendance, Stoke Climsland.
When registered: Seventh August 1848.
Signiture of registrar: ______ ______ Registrar.

Now even still, with an age solution in hand for Elizabeth Rowe, there are a number of things to check out in elimiating possiblities to narrow it down to the single remaining possibility that is within grasp. Thus what is or will be presented here, is as good and close as it has come over years of working the matter out. And still it could be toppled by an emergence of solid fact. But at least it is not just a quick jab at the answer taken without a through evaluation of what there is or appears to be had on the matter.

** NOTE: There are two entries/transcriptions of the 'base' child of Elizabeth Phillips.
Both are give below in the third column. One, the BT, give the child's name as simply
William Philips after the name of the mother. The other entry gives the same child's name
as 'William Rowe Philips' with only a reference number 1545200-856. From further 'family'
records below the matter seems that this William Rowe Philips becomes known by either/both
names of Rowe and/or Philips, likely after his father, who is further presumed to be the
some William Rowe that Elizabeth Phillips does actually end up marrying.

The record of the first child's birth makes him not legitimate and leaves open the question of just who was his natural father. Yet by William Rowe's marriage to Elizabeth Philips and the aparent 'adoption' of his 'step-son' or out of wed-lock son, William Rowe has assumed full responsibility for the child of his wife Elizabeth Philips even to the point or revisiting his baptism record [see records of such above as child of Elizabeth Philips] and having recorded there that his name is William Rowe though son of Philips out of wed-lock. For LDS family binding this should be the considered relationship of the family group.

While on father William ROWE/PHILIPS baptism record has been transcribed as either/or, that is his name is to be considered either Rowe after his 'adoptive father' William ROWE or after his Mother's maiden name of Philips, as he was born out of wed-lock. There seems to be some recordings of his children's baptism that indicate that they are assuming their mother's Maiden (nee) name of ROWE to avoid any such problems. This is such that three of the four known siblings of Elizabeth Rowe, who not like Elizabath who was born in Altarnun and there merely recorded as it being her surname of ROWE whether of bing that of her father or Mother, who both have claim to the name Rowe.

Both Catherine's and Ann's baptism reflect that their surname is that of their mother's maiden name of (nee) ROWE. George's baptism record states straight out the 'ROW' is his Mother's maiden name that he is taking though records favior the name ROwE. And Youngest brother Willaim ROW just records that his surname is ROW. Fitting this family together from Altarnun in and through Callington to Stoke Climsland seems to have located the long searched for wife of William Hender, clockmaker, of Callington.

"Life Should Be So Long As to Allow All the World's Most Stubborn of
Problems to Be Worked Out and Resolved to Satisfactory Conclusions."

Within the last four years strides have been made in the William Hender and Elizbeth Rowe family. New children have been found. Baptismal dates and even a marriage date and locations have been found. The marriage from the Callington Heritage Center parish register of information shared is depicted below:

           _________________________________________________________________________________
        | Parish | Event | Firstname | Surname | Date | Year | Age | Notes |
        | Callington | Marriage | William | HENDER | 27-Jul | 1811 | | sojourner |
        | Callington | Marriage | Elizabeth | ROW | 27-Jul | 1811 | | of Callington |
         * Callington Heritage Centre [William Hender sojourner from Altarnun Parish.]

Between what records of the family that have been found, a bit of a confusing picture was put together. From the newly found marriage record, it was found consistant with William having been considered a 'sojourner' to the parish of Callington, as he was of Altarnun and it was there that he was born and baptized. And what seemed to through things off was that Elizabeth Row/Rowe was on that record reported to be 'of Callington.' That often establishes what a person's parish of baptism is. But then there was the news article in the Royal Cornwall Gazette that named Miss Rowe's residence as being in Callington when anouncing the 'band' and 'marriage' there as of the paper's 10th of August, 1811 date. But searches round and about Callington turned up nothing relative to her family.

Then there was the record of her and her husband's burials in Venterdon, within the Stoke Climsland arena. William's burial dates matched well with his death certificate dates and confirmed that this indeed were the burials of William and his wife Elizabeth Hender nee Rowe. William died 5 August 1848 and was buried 8 August 1848 there at Venterdon. He was age 60, which check with his baptism date in Altarnun. There was not reason not to accept the information about his wife Elizabeth, that she was buried there on 14 February 1850 at Venterdon with her husband. She being age 57. And that age disqualified a number of the Elizabeth Rowe possibilities. And there was but one near 'mis' left. An Elizabeth Rowe also baptized in Altarnun to a Willian and Catherine Rowe.

         _________________________________________________________________________________
        | Parish | Event | Firstname | Surname | Date | Year | Age | Notes |
        | Stokeclimsland | Burial | William | HENDER | 08-Aug | 1848 | 60 | Venterdon |
        | Stokeclimsland | Burial | Elizabeth | HENDER | 14-Feb | 1850 | 57 | Venterdon |

But Elizabeth was of Callington, a resident of Callington, but no family members of hers nor her own baptism could be found there. Yet Holmes has said that once you have eliminated all the possiblities, whatever is left, not matter how seemingly impossible, must be the solution. But of course that is just 'good fiction' isn't it? Yet of the records had available, only one remained however as unlikely a fit that it may have seemed.

So with all the relative 'skills' of some 50 years of genealogy research ability come by over that long duration of life, I determined to, if I could disprove this one last standing 'duck' in my hunt. And what I have found I have set out above. And what I have now found does seem to even be the last staning likelihood of exactly what is the truth of the matter. Hidden under a 'dual identity' like all good mysteries out to be, I believe I have found Elizabeth Rowes' family and parentage. Her father being William ROWE or PHILIPS for the reasons set out above. And her mother also being a ROWE, even Catherine ROWE, who's children have been said in their baptism records to have taken their mother's maiden (nee) name as their own surname, thus avoiding the controversy of their father's identity as also being William ROWE (adopted son) alias William PHILIPS a natural born son of his mother who married another William ROWE as her husband.

I am 67 and I've been working the genealogy records since age 17 in attending the Salt Lake genealogy library there at that time but at a different location than where it stands today. And I've been search for Elizabeth Rowe for just about that long also, and now I do believe that I have found her and her family. And I realize why it has been so difficult to find. Often in plain sight but hidden by the facts of the matter that would eliminated it as being possible. That is until now when it was the 'last straw' so to speak and a detailed reveiw of all the extenuating matters of the thing had led to the believed conclusion that here it is as having been obscured by further totally unlikely additional facts in and of themselves, which when taken together as a whole but come together in the only way left that it can be put together to be the truth of the thing.
