BIBLE DICTIONARY JOAB
(1) Eldest son of Zeruiah, Davids sister, and captain of Davids
army. He was closely associated with all the chief events of Davids
reign, and was mostly faithful to his master
but of a mean spirit, deceptive and cruel
(2 Samuel 3:26-30;
20:8-13).
After Davids death he was a part of the conspiracy
against Solomon seeking, after David's death, both Solomon's and Bath-sheba's
death (1 Kings
1:7-8 &
11-12)
by condemning them despite his own involvement in the death of Uriah
(1 Samuel 11:14-17)
and in favor of Adonijahs succession
(1 Kgs. 2:28), and for that
[the] reason
of continued conspiracy with Adonijah's attempt to marry
Abishag in order to cement the alliance with the Philistines against Solomon
which would raise Adonijah to power, he was put to death by
Solomon (1 Kgs. 2: 29-34)
who stated the reason sought by David against him
(1 Kings 2:5-6 &
31-32) as the
conspiracy would not have been so outwardly known and
substantiated.
(2) Two others (1 Chr. 4: 14;
Ezra 2: 6).
