GUIDE TO THE SCRIPTURES
CHRONOLOGY

The following chronology, or list of events, is not comprehensive and is meant only to give the reader a sense of the sequence of events in biblical and Book of Mormon times:

Events in the days of the early patriarchs: (Because of the difficulty in determining exact dates for the events in this section, dates are not given.)

B.C. (or B.C.E.—Before Common Era)
4000Adam fell.
Enoch ministered
Noah ministered; the earth was flooded.
The Tower of Babel was built; the Jaredites traveled to the Promised Land.
Melchizedek ministered.
Noah died.
Abram (Abraham) was born.
Isaac was born.
Jacob was born.
Joseph was born.
Joseph was sold into Egypt.
Joseph appeared before Pharaoh.
Jacob (Israel) and his family went down to Egypt.
Jacob (Israel) died.
Joseph died.
Moses was born.
Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt (the Exodus).
Moses was translated.
Joshua died.
After Joshua died, the period of the judges began, the first judge being Othniel and the last Samuel; the order and dates of the rest are very uncertain.
Saul was anointed king.

Events of the United Kingdom of Israel:

1095Saul’s reign began.
1063David was anointed king by Samuel.
1055David became king in Hebron.
1047David became king in Jerusalem; Nathan and Gad prophesied.
1015Solomon became king of all Israel.
991The temple was finished.
975Solomon died; the ten northern tribes revolted against Rehoboam, his son, and Israel was divided.

Events of Israel:

975Jeroboam was king of Israel.
875Ahab ruled in Samaria over northern Israel; Elijah prophesied.
851Elisha worked great miracles.
792Amos prophesied.
790Jonah and Hosea prophesied.
721The Northern Kingdom was destroyed; the ten tribes were taken into captivity; Micah prophesied.

Events of Judah:

949Shishak, king of Egypt, plundered Jerusalem.
740Isaiah began to prophesy. (Rome was founded; Nabonassar was king of Babylon in 747; Tiglath-pileser III was king of Assyria from 747 to 734.)
728Hezekiah was king of Judah. (Shalmaneser IV was king of Assyria.)
642Nahum prophesied.
628Jeremiah and Zephaniah prophesied.
609Obadiah prophesied; Daniel was carried away captive to Babylon. (Nineveh fell in 606; Nebuchadnezzar was king of Babylon from 604 to 561.)
598Ezekiel prophesied in Babylon; Habakkuk prophesied; Zedekiah was king of Judah.
587Nebuchadnezzar captured Jerusalem.

Events in Book of Mormon History:

600Lehi left Jerusalem.
588Mulek departed from Jerusalem for the promised land.
588Nephites separated themselves from the Lamanites (between 588 and 570).
400Jarom received the plates.
360Omni received the plates.
148Abinadi was martyred; Alma reestablished the Church among the Nephites.
124Benjamin gave his final speech to the Nephites.
100Alma the Younger and the sons of Mosiah began their work.
91The reign of the judges began among the Nephites.
5Samuel the Lamanite prophesied of Christ’s birth.
A.D. (or C. E.)
33 or 34The resurrected Christ appeared in America. 385 The Nephite nation was destroyed.
421Moroni hid the plates.

Events in Jewish History:

537Cyrus decreed that the Jews could return from Babylon.
520Haggai and Zechariah prophesied.
486Esther lived.
458Ezra was commissioned to make reforms.
444Nehemiah was appointed governor of Judea.
432Malachi prophesied.
332Alexander the Great conquered Syria and Egypt. 323 Alexander died.
277The Septuagint, the translation of Jewish scriptures into Greek, was begun.
167Mattathias the Maccabee revolted against Syria.
166Judas Maccabaeus became leader of the Jews.
165The temple was cleansed and rededicated; Hanukkah originated.
161Judas Maccabaeus died.
63Pompey conquered Jerusalem, and the rule of the Maccabees ended in Israel.
51Cleopatra reigned.
41Herod and Phasael were made joint tetrarchs of Judea.
37Herod became leader in Jerusalem.
31The Battle of Actium was fought; Augustus was emperor of Rome from 31 B.C. to A.D. 14.
30Cleopatra died.
17Herod restored the temple.

Events in Christian History:

A.D. (or C. E. -Common Era)

Birth of Jesus Christ:
30Christ’s ministry began.
33Christ was crucified.
35Paul was converted.
45Paul took his first missionary journey.
58Paul was sent to Rome.
61The history of the Acts of the Apostles closed.
62Rome was burned; Christians were persecuted under Nero.
70Christians retired to Pella; Jerusalem was sieged and captured.
95Christians were persecuted by Domitian.
