ROMANS, EPISTLE TO

See also Paul; Pauline Epistles

In the New Testament, a letter that Paul wrote to the Saints in Rome. He was contemplating a visit to Jerusalem, which was certain to be dangerous. If he escaped with his life, he hoped afterwards to visit Rome. The letter was meant in part to prepare the Church there to receive him when he came. It may also be regarded as containing a statement of certain doctrines which had been in dispute and which Paul now regarded as finally established.

Chapter 1 contains Paul’s greeting to the Romans. Chapters 2-11 include several declarations on the doctrine of faith, works, and grace. Chapters 12-16 contain practical teachings on love, duty, and holiness.
