Search bar on each page
Display a search bar at the top of each page, including buttons for finding and clearing marked references. You can type or paste a word, phrase, or reference in the field on the search bar.

Search words as highlighted text
Display search terms in bold type within the text in the Search Results page.

Footnotes in text
Highlight all footnote links in the scripture text, including the footnote markers (superscript a, b, c, and so on).

All footnotes within a verse
To display the content of all footnotes for a verse at the same time, select this option.

One footnote at a time
To display the content of each footnote separately, select this option.

To customize footnote content for any verse or range of verses from the scriptures, select any combination of the following options:

FOOTNOTES

All footnotes found in the printed version of the English LDS edition of the scriptures are included in this Internet edition and indicated by the standard superscript letters. In the footnote window, the search word used to find the reference appears in bold.

Cross-references in the footnotes are linked to the referenced scripture, including the full text of the verse and a link to the full text of the chapter or section in which the verse appears. Each scripture cross-reference is also linked to references in the Study Helps.

Changing Footnote Display in the Display Options Page
From the Display Options page you can:

  • Highlight footnotes in text, including links to cross references, by clicking “Footnotes in text” under Display.
  • Add markers to footnotes that contain information and notes of only a certain kind by checking the appropriate check boxes under Mark footnotes containing. The markers appear as small, superscript boxes to the right of the footnoted word.
  • Display the content of all footnotes for a verse at the same time or display the content of each footnote separately by checking the appropriate check box under Footnote content. (If you choose to display only one footnote at a time, you can move from one footnote to the next by clicking < [previous] or > [next] on the right-hand side of the toolbar at the bottom of the page.)

Changing Footnote Display in Your Browser
You may be able to change the color of footnoted words. For example, in Microsoft® Explorer® go to View > Internet options, or in Netscape® Navigator go to Edit > Preferences, and change the color of highlighted words.

 

Abbreviations Used in Footnotes

Abbr. Explanation Example
GR An alternate translation from the Greek. Matthew 6:46: “And when he had asent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.”
46a GR bid them farewell.
HEB An alternate translation from the Hebrew. Isaiah 66:16: “For by fire and by his asword will bthe LORD cplead with all flesh: and the dslain of the LORD shall be many.”
16b HEB all flesh be judged by the LORD.
IE An explanation of idioms and difficult constructions. Psalms 41:3: “The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt amake all his bed in his bsickness.”
3a IE heal all his infirmities when he is sick.
TG References to the “Topical Guide with Selected Concordance and Index,” given by topic title. (This material is included in the Appendix in the printed edition of the scriptures.) Alma 22:10: “And Aaron said unto him: Yea, he is that Great Spirit, and he acreated all things both in heaven and in earth. Believest thou this?”

JST Excerpts from the Prophet Joseph Smith’s translation of the Bible

Short excerpts are included in the footnotes:
Hebrews 11:1: “Now afaith is the bsubstance of things choped for, the devidence of things not seen.”

Longer excerpts are provided in the Appendix:
