SEARCH OPTIONS
Click any of the following help topics for more information: Search Options Page Understanding the Parts of the Search Options Page Performing Searches from the Search Options Page Search Tips Sample Searches Search Tools PARTS OF THE SEARCH OPTIONS PAGE Search for Type or paste words, phrases, or scripture references in the Search for field that you want to find in the scriptures or Study Helps. Search To find text in the scriptures or Study Helps that matches what you typed or pasted in the Search for field, click the Search button. Limit Search to To limit your search to matching words, phrases, or scripture references found in scripture text, chapter headings, or footnotes, click of the check boxes. Option (similar words) To broaden your search to include words similar to the word you typed or pasted in the Search for field, check this box. For example, if you type gather, the search results also include references with the words gathers, gathered, gathering, and gathereth. Clear Marked References (see also Marking scripture references) To clear all marked references, click the Clear Marked References button. (To clear individual marked references, click the number that precedes the verse.) Find Marked References (see also Marking scripture references) To display all marked references, click the Find Marked References button. SEARCH TIPS - Use meaningful search terms rather than throwaway words such as and, or, or with.
- Use two or more words to narrow your search. For example, the words God, Jesus, and pray appears hundreds of times in the scriptures. By using them in combination with another wordJesus combined with pray, for exampleyou limit the search and get more specific results. (See Sample Searches for specific information on using two or more search terms.)
- When you use three or more words in the Search for field, each combination of words is searched and presented as a separate result. If you use faith, hope, and charity, for example, your search results include lists of references with the following combinations of search terms: faith and charity; faith and hope; charity and hope; and faith, hope, and charity.
- You can copy and paste scripture references from other applications, such as a word processing program, into the Search for field. This is a good way to enter a list of multiple references to search.
SAMPLE SEARCHES Searching for One Word In the Search Options page: - Type or paste a word in the Search for field.
- Select the sources to search by clicking one or more check boxes under Search in.
- Select how you would like to limit your search by clicking one or more check boxes under Limit Search to. For example, if you want only chapter headings in your search results, click the check box next to Headings.
Note: If none of the options under Limit Search to is selected, the program automatically searches all three options. - If you want your search results to include words similar to your search term, click the check box under Option (similar words).
- Click Search.
Searching for Two Words in the Same Verse - In the Search for field, type or paste the search words, with & or and between them.
- In the Limit Search to field, click the appropriate check boxes.
- Click Search.
Examples: faith & charity faith & charity & hope faith and charity faith and charity and hope Searching for One of Several Words - In the Search for field, type or paste the words, with | or or between them.
- In the Limit Search to section, click the appropriate check boxes.
- Click Search.
Examples: faith|charity faith|charity|hope faith or charity faith or charity or hope Searching for an Exact Phrase - In the Search for field, type or paste the phrase, with quotation marks at the beginning and end of the phrase.
- In the Limit Search to section, click the appropriate check boxes.
- Click Search.
Examples: light of Christ prayer of faith Searching for References by Book, Chapter, and Verse - Type or paste a scripture reference in the Search for field.
- You can type either the full title of the book of scripture or the standard abbreviation. (Examples: Matthew 5:48 or Matt. 5:48; Doctrine and Covenants 135:3 or D&C 135:3)
Click here for a list of abbreviations. - To search for consecutive verses within the same chapter or section, use a hyphen (-) between the verse numbers. (Example: Moroni 10:3-5)
- To search for nonconsecutive verses within the same chapter or section, use a comma (,) to separate the verse numbers. (Example: Alma 5:14, 26)
- To search for two or more complete references, use a semicolon (;) to separate the references. (Example: Alma 32:21; Hebrews 11:1)
- In the Limit Search to section, click the appropriate check boxes.
- Click Search.
Note: If you enter only the book and chapter in the Search for field, the search result will be the chapter summary. To see the full text of the chapter, click the underlined book and chapter number that appears above the summary. Searching for Topics in the Study Helps - Use step 1 from any of the following search methods:
- Click the check box next to Study Helps under Search in.
- To search the Study Helps only, uncheck the other check boxes under Search in by clicking each so that only Study Helps is selected.
- Click Search.
SEARCH TOOLS Marking Scripture References You can mark and store up to a total of 50 references. Text in the Study Helps cannot be marked. - Use any of the search methods under Sample Searches.
- In the Search Results page, mark a verse for future reference by clicking the underlined verse number at the beginning of the verse. A small square will appear next to the verse number.
- Return to the Search Options page by clicking your browsers Back button or by clicking Search Options on the navigation bar at the top of the page.
- In the Search Options page, click Find Marked References to bring up the scripture reference you just marked.
You can clear marked references by clicking Clear Marked References in the Search Options page. Using Cross-References To view cross-references to other verses and Study Helps for a particular verse or passage: - Use one of the search methods under Sample Searches.
- View explanatory footnotes, related scriptures, and references to material in the Study Helps by clicking the highlighted words or scripture references in the Search Results page.
For example, if you search for Alma 32:21, you can click any word that is highlighted as a footnote and find references to other verses that discuss the same topic or include similar words. To view cross-references from other verses and Study Helps to a particular verse or passage: - Use the search method under Searching for References by Book, Chapter, and Verse.
- View scriptures and materials from the Study Helps by clicking Find Cross-References in the Search Results page. This displays the scriptures and Study Helps that refer to the scripture reference at the top of the Search Results page.
For example, if you search for Alma 32:21 and then click Find Cross-References in the Search Results page, you will be able to see a list of verses and Study Helps that refer to Alma 32:21. This list includes: John 20:29; Ether 12:6; Faith in the Bible Dictionary; Faith, Heart, and Hope in the Topical Guide; and Alma, Faith, Hope, and Perfect, Perfected, Perfection in the index to the triple combination. Finding Marked Footnotes - Use the search method under Searching for References by Book, Chapter, and Verse.
- In the Search Results page, click Find Marked Footnotes to view footnotes that meet the criteria you selected in the Display Options page (only footnotes containing scripture references or Topical Guide references, for example).
Note: To move from one footnote to the next when you are using the One footnote at a time option, click < (previous) or > (next) on the right-hand side of the toolbar at the bottom of the page. To change the criteria for how footnotes are displayed, see Footnote Content under Display Options. Using Special Search Characters Use the following search characters to limit or expand your search. Note: The Similar Words option does not apply when you use special search characters.
