GOD'S ALL SEEING EYE
[Omniscience ~ Omniscient]

per my understandings as a member of the Church - Don R. Hender

" ... all things for their glory are manifest, past, present, and future, and are continually before the Lord." ~ D&C 130:7

The 'eye' seems to man to be the prime input source of God's ability to know all things. For surely when one speaks of God's seeing all things they are but alluding to God's ability to know all things. Thus we are left to conclude that the concept of God's All Seeing Eye is but metaphorically denoting God's complete Omniscient power. Certainly the eye is but one of God's avenues to knowing all. In human terms there are four other senses which contribute to man's knowledge, hearing, smelling, touch, and taste. But with God there is more, and at least one more that I amd aware of. And that is God's direct spirit communication between the spirit of man and the spirit of God. Spiritual discernment would fall withing this category. That is beyond the five senses, God has the ability to discern was is in a person's heart and he knows what is in a person's mind, he discerns a person's very thoughts. And still beyond the 'All Seeing Eye' perspective, God's Omnisciences extends to the realm of knowing all things, that is there is nothing, which God does not know. Achademically that certainly is a broard range of knowledge. But the omniscient power concludes that there is nothing that God does not know. That begins to be much beyond my comprehension and thus I must rely on my faith that that is so. Certainly to my simple mind of human understanding I conceptually ask, what 'Universe-ity' did God graduate from to have that knowledge and understanding of all things.

Our immediate God Jehovah in the Old Testament and before, was but a God of Spirit, and that reaches into the concept of intelligence and that intelligence is not reliant upon the physical human brain. In fact as we study the gospel we come to the conclusion that our physical brain, like our physical body is but a housing or tabernacle for the housing of our spirit and our intelligence. And we also learn that there is that part of us that is eternal in its nature and that part is said to be the 'intelligence' of man. And it is by and through that eternal matter of intelligence that we, like Jehovah (Jesus Christ), also co-eternal with God. Now this is one for science, if the phsical brain is but a phsical 'house' for our the 'intelligence', then there is likely no real relationship between the size of the brain and the intelligence of the person. Just as some people have large or smaller houses without it actually effecting who they are. So even though an elephant has a larger brain than man, it does not follow that an elephant is more intelligent than man or that an elephant never forgets. Actually a man's brain is down the line a bit. For example, a sperm whale's brain's size in weight is 18 pounds, an elephant's brain weighs some 11 pounds, a dolphin's brains comes in at about 3.5 pounds and a man's brain weighs about 3 pounds. Well at least man is not a 'bird brain,' unless maybe one of those bigger birds of past ages. So much for those aliens of science fiction and their having a bigger head to contain their bigger brains being more intelligent than man.

Seeing Eye

"Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do."
    ~ New Testament | Hebrews 4:13

God's All Seeing Eye stands admid corrupt concepts and misunderstandings. Even Satan masquerades pretending to this power of God. It is a basic tenent of the Traditional Christian Church, the Ancient True Religion, and is even a Masonic image to do with God. And the concept is 'there is nothing that cannot be or is not seen.' 'Nor is there anything that cannot be known.' Many such religions of the world also hold to this maxim concerning their God or Gods, though from one consideration, that all such acknowledge God's Omniscience, whether it be the true God or a corruption thereof. He is Omniscient. Some even associate other of God's powers to and with the 'eye' or even 'eyes', such as those held by the Egyptian Wedjat/Wadjet eye of Horus and even Ra.

Ironically, though universally believed in Christology, often God's All Seeing Eye is almost exclusively presented as a Mason Symbol. It is only Mason because Masons have included the symbolism of God's all seeing eye as a part of their symbolic images. This is sad because all of a sudden as one puts forth a graphic of an all seeing eye of God, it is automatically associated with Masonry first and not first with God. Such is the sad hijacking and even sometimes mockery which the satanic makes of that which is of god by mimicking and pretending to that which is of God as being of Lucifer as God. These false understandings even go to the point of classifying even 'true' Christian religion as but a memeber of the occults because Satan has shared this symbolism with himself. Truth is Lucifer or Satan has no such complete power in this regard as does God. And God's omniscience power extents beyond the power of sight or mere seeing.

Omniscience is from that trio of traits which we attribute to our God, that is he is Omniscient, Omnipotent, and Omnipresnt. And within that trio of traits it does seem that Omniscience or Omniscient is that which fits God's to see and know all things.+ Yet the 'omni' powers are not exclusive of each other. Certainly it takes an all powerful God to have all knowing abilities and all power of presence. Some further extend God's 'omni' traits to other things such as Benevolence and Love. And it seems that a number of other areas could be considered in which God is 'onmi' or 'all' in being. But here we have selected God's 'All Seeing Eye' power of our Omniscient God.

Omniscience: all knowing nature of God
Omnipotence: all powerful nature of God
Omnipresence: unlimited nature of God in his presence
Ominbenevolence: unlimited 'all' "goodness"

Some, in terms of God's All Seeing power, begin to confuse the OMNI powers as to just which are involved. Some even put 'all seeing' in the Omnipresence category because they reason that in order to 'see' one must be present. I suppose they have not considered the power of 'television' as in their own homes. Some Book of Mormon students make the same mistake with Ether's ability to 'see'. Even though the scripture text states that Ether would venture out of his cave at night in order to 'see' the events as the took place of the destruction of the Jaredites, they neither consider that Ether did not follow around the warring factions all around the country side for miles upon miles just to retrace his steps back to his cave each day or that what Ether records did happen in the day time historically and Ehter but did view it at day. Ether's answer lies in 'night vision', that is seeing the actual events by a visionary source. Not that we have God's capabilities to present such to his prophets and seers, but we do have a ready parallel that we might have a similar appreciation of and that is the power of Television by which we can see events around the world on our evening news. And to have the 'All Seeing Power' you do not have to be there in person. I can be there at Macy's Christimas parade and if need be go to the bathroom in my house in Utah during the commercials. Some of what God has available to him has been revealed in scriptures, which will be covered later.

In the respect that God is all knowing, it ought to be understood that the 'eye' of God is but a symbolic image that gives reference to this fact that nothing is hiden from God. God knows all things and by association it is depicted that God knows all because God sees all, not just with his eyes but with his mind as well. That is perhaps why the 'all seeing eye' is somethings inserted in the forehead as a 'thrid eye' because it is the 'eye of God's knowledge and understanding' and not merely a visual eye but a symbolic mental power as well.

Now, while these three 'OMNI' traits of God attempt to embrace all that God is, in doing so there is some matter that require further explanation. And yet, the 'all elaborate three' really still do not define all that is the nature of our God, though some attempt to make it so, and in so doing they acctually limit God. To confine God to these three 'OMNIs' just does not see true of all else that God is. What else is there that we know of our God that is not covered by the big three 'OMNIs'? Well in his nature God is 'all loving and caring' and God has a full set of emotions. And there are a number of other things of a more 'human' and common nature which the emphasis on the 'OMNIs' seem to strip God of being.

But we here are dealing particularly with God being all seeing, or that is, God knows, sees, hears and is basically aware of all thing. We may not understand just exactly how God does this, but then we are not God, are we? An addendum follows, which is a 'walk through the scriptures.' Perhaps this will bring some more light and understanding to it.

Sea of Glass
[Seer . Seeing All together, Past, Present and Future]

6 And before the throne [of God] there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst
of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.
     (New Testament | Revelation 4:6)

1 AND I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last
plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God.
2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory
over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name,
stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.
3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great
and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of
      saints.
     (New Testament | Revelation 15:1-3)

1 Q. What is the sea of glass spoken of by John, 4th chapter, and 6th verse of the Revelation?
      A. It is the earth, in its sanctified, immortal, and eternal state.

(Doctrine and Covenants | Section 77:1)
5 I answer, Yes. But there are no angels who minister to this earth but those who do belong or
      have belonged to it.
    6 The angels do not reside on a planet like this earth;
7 But they reside in the presence of God, on a globe like a sea of glass and fire, where all
things for their glory are manifest, past, present, and future, and are continually before
      the Lord.
8 The place where God resides is a great Urim and Thummim.
9 This earth, in its sanctified and immortal state, will be made like unto crystal and will be
a Urim and Thummim to the inhabitants who well thereon, whereby all things pertaining to an
      inferior kingdom, or all kingdoms of a lower order, will be manifest to those who dwell on it;
and this earth will be Christ's.
     (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 130:5 - 9)

*[Now a ponderance: Today many things that are a miracle to those of former ages are but common place unto us, and we are but mere 'man' who has accomplished them. How much greater are the things of God, which are likely but common place to him but would be and are miracles to us? I sit in my living room and push a button by my comfortable chair and before me mounted on my wall is what is but a 'sea of glass' as it were, and by it I sea or sail the world seeing events even as they occur. Certainly God's 'sea of glass' is that which is much greater than mine, and it is legions beyond that which I may image in exactly what it is, does and so forth. But in some ways, God's all seeing sea of glass like unto crystal sets before him the worlds that are his and like a great Urim and Thummim, God sees before his eyes all things past, present and future that pertain to all his inferior kingdoms, kingdoms of a lower order, and they are manifest and seen by those who dwell with God in his presence and kingdom. Exactly what God's 'sea of glass' is, I really do not know, but I have a parallel experience in my own living room each day that can help me to perhaps understand a little bit.

Now then, I have a panel of buttons by which my 'seeing widow' does open. A 'seer' has two stones, a urim and thummim by which he sees. He doesn't need a 'seeing screen' like mind but then neither do 'projected holograms.' Just how God's power places before the eyes of the seer such as what he sees, I do not understand. But God has given unto man two 'seer stones' that aid man to see what God 'projects' to him that which God wants that man to see. At least with the Urim and Thummim it is not NBC, CNN or some other network programing seen, but it is what God presents.]
