Smith is the most common of last names, thus it is difficult to research a 'Smith' genealogical line. What we have is from family records, census records and a few other types of record recordings, which will be reference as these families are set forth. We find our Smith family located in Tyrrell/Washington County, which Washington county was taken out of a part of Martin County and Tyrrell County when created in 1799, all of which was once Tyrrell Precinct.

In beginning our coverage of our known Smith family, we begin with but two know generations the family of Frederick Iredell Smith and his son Henry Lewis Smith.

Descendants of Frederick Iredell Smith

As one of my 2^nd Great Grandfathers, from the 1850 and 1860 Census records it is calculated that Frederick Iredell Smith was born about 1810. From a marriage banns record we know that he marriaged Esther Combs Edwards dated 4 March 1845, Columbia, Tyrrell, North Carolina. Esther/Easter Combs Edwards was born 15 Novermber 1823, Creswell, Washington, N.C. She died 19 Septermber 1900. Their names are variously spelt in such varying records as Fedrick, Easter, Hester, and Frederic etc. From these and other such family records and knowledge the children of this family are as follows:

• Mary Caroline Smith born about 1846, Tyrrell, N.C. She married a Silvane Sawyer.
• William Stanley Smith born about 1848, Tyrrell, N.C.
• Henry Lewis Smith born about 1853, Creswell, Washington/Tyrrell, N.C. He married 24 June 1874 Harriet Eliza West. He died about 1888. He is my Great Granfather.
• Deborah Ann Smith born about 1855, Tyrrell, N.C. She married Robert Sawyer.
• Elizabeth Drucilla Smith born about 1858, Tyrrell, N.C. She married Henry Sawyer.
• John Respess Smith born 2 September 1864, Tyrrell, N.C. He married Caroline 'Kate' Spruell* on 18 October 1885 in Scuppernong. He died 18 October 1942.
• Charles Grandy Smith born 29 January 1867, Tyrrell, N.C. He married Lenora Carolina Langley. He died 24 March 1947.

* Caroline Spruill was the daughter of Bailey Spruill and his wife Nancy. She was age 26 when married so she was born about 1859.

Descendants of Henry Lewis Smith

Henry Lewis Smith was the 3^rd child of Frederick Iredell Smith and Esther Combs Edwards. He was born about 1851, Creswell, Washington, N.C. He married Harriett Eliza Barnes 27 June 1874 at Scuppernong, Washington, N.C. at the home of Dennis Barnes. He was 23 and she was 22 at the time of the marriage. Harriett was born about 1853 Creswell, Washington, N.C. and her parents were James Barnes and Eliza Ann West. She died 1885 near Columbia, Tyrrell, N.C. Henry Lewis Smith died about 1888 near Columbia, Tyrrell, N.C. They had four known children as follows:

• James Thomas Smith born 22 November or 7 April 1876 Creswell, Washington, N.C. He married Saddie Orlander [Sarah Alexander] 5 May 1895. He died 20 February 1925.
• Frederick Edwin Smith born 10 March 1878 Creswell, Washington, N.C. He died February 1901.
• Sadie Smith born about 1880. She died about 1882.
• Lenora Mabel Smith born 22 February 1883 Creswell, Washington, N.C. She married Joseph Thomas Swanner 21 April 1901. She died 4 February 1966 Miami, Dade, Florida. She is my Grandmother.

After the death of his wife Harriett, Henry Lewis Smith married Drucilla Van Horn. They had two sons as follows:

• Charles Lewis Smith born about 1887. Charles Lewis was later baptised as recorded in the Creswell Parish record 14 May 1895.
• Eddy Smith born about 1889.
