SMITH or SMYTH - Of all the variations of the common name of Smith, only two seem to be used in
the area of St Columb Minor and Newlyn East; at least as far as the parish records can take our Smith
family of Cornwall back. The map at the right locates where those parishes are located, that is along
the mid-north shores of Cornwall is the Deanery of Pydar, within which are the parishes of St Columb
Minor and Newlyn East. While our Smith family is in St Columb Minor for some generations, it may
well be that they do also go back into Newlyn East. And while 'for sure' identification of such family
it often takes more than parish record alignment, for the name of Smith in this age in this area, there
seems but one related Smith family in habitation there. So what I have been able to put together from
such records, I will set out generation by generation here below beginning with John Smith no less.

John Smyth and Amy __________ Family
10th Great Grandparents
Loosely put together, as there are none others of the period so represented in the records, is this
family of John Smyth and his wife Amy, whose last name is not given on the parish marriage record.
And in the parishes surrounding there are only to such baptism that would apply, and that is of a
daughter Johan Smyth born at the marriage year-accuracy of the parish extration of such an old record
of some concern; and a son 'Water' Smyth, which may will be such as 'Walter' as the more common name
of that phonetic rendition. You see, Walter without the long-hard 'L' sound is but 'water'. And dialects
of English are known to 'lite' over such hard consonants sound. While in New Zealand, many would pronounce
my last name phonetically as 'henda' rather than 'Hender' with the hard 'R' sound. I found the constrast
humorous, as they would call me Elder 'Henda' and they would speak of the long yellow fruit as a 'bananer'.
Now, given this to be that Walter Smyth/Smith found next door in St Columb Minor, I place his marriage
with this family. As stated, there are no others at all of record in Cornwall of whom these would fit.

Walter [Water] Smith/Smyth and Kateren Kirrihaught Family
9th Great Grandparents
Now the 'Kirrihaught' surname of the record transcriber is somewhat of an enigma, for there are no
such surnames in the database of the OPC Parish records in Cornwall at this time. There is a location
Kirkhaugh in North Humbia and in 'The Peerage' there is the name Kirkhaught whih does appear. The
nearest I find in Cornwall is such as Kirkeet in Antony, but no Kateren or Katherines. If it is a
surname of location origin, then it could be Kateren de Kirkhaught. But I still find no response for
any person by that surname in Cornwall 'yet'. Perhaps one day it will click with me what it is. But
hopefully not as long as it took me to find out that Moon, Moone and Mohun are akin. But who knows
how a befuddled records clerk would even attempt the name, little alone how a transcriber may read
the alphabet soup listing of it? The nearest hint I can find is that 'there is a very general
tradition that some centuries ago three brothers named Kirk of Scotland' were and the name is variously
spelt Kirko, Kirkoe, Kirkco, Kirkhaugh, Kirkhaught, Kirkhauch, Kirkhaucht, Kyrkhauch, Kh-kalch, and
Kii'k. I suppose that Kateren does sound Scotish? Well I have tried all those out, and did some response
from some but none of the time period. Perhaps I need a good Celtic language expert here? -Cornish, Welsh,
Irrish, Scottish etc.? The 'English' have so corrupted the Celtic names of the Cornish, Welsh, Irish and
Scotish that who can know or find them or even what they have all become?
