Tree of Life

~ Dream ~ Vision ~

prepared by Don R. Hender

In properly studying any such topic in the Book of Mormon, such as the Tree of Life Vision, one good suggestion is to review through how it is arranged in the original 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon. It may or may not help, but there just might be some hints and guidance as to how the Book of Mormon of today ought to be read. The 1830 edition is as close as most of us can get to just how the translation came off of the prophet's tongue and as per his review. What makes that edition different from today's text is not any great matter. For what has been done has been truthly in that spirit of making the Book of Mormon more readable, easier to study, and accessible to the student of the Book of Mormon, and also the lay member of the church and the investigator, than ever it was in the 1830 edition.

The 1830 edition was in just ordinary chapter and paragraph form and not 'scripturized form.' And the chapters would often be quite long and often run according to the range of a topic being covered. This is the case in terms of what value may be taken here for the vision of the Tree of Life. The whole of Lehi's and Nephi's experiences with the vision of the Tree of Life is in but one chapter in the 1830 edition. This speaks to the matter of it being topically related as to the length of the chapter. It is all in the one Chapter III of the First Book of Nephi in the 1830 edition, which compares to spreading that same material out over 6 chapters in today's Book of Mormon. Yes the 1830 Chapter III was rather long, but you at least knew all that was topic related and that the whole of the topic was related to the Tree of Life.

The text's 'scripturalization' was done or at least completed in 1879 as Elder Orson Pratt 'shortened' and 'arraged' the lengthy paragraphs of the Book of Mormon into 'scripturalized verses' and he shorted the chapters by 'cutting them up' into somewhat of a logical fashion. The 'books' were left the same, but now most of them had more chapters which were shorter to read due to their reduced size in individual length. It made the text much more readable and accessible to a reader or student to be able to reference the book by chapter and precise verse, than by seemingly 'oversized' chapters and often 'lengthy' paragraphs. Elder Pratt also supplied a number of footnotes and cross references, many of which remain in the text today. Basically Elder Pratt's edition is more convienent and it became popular and is the stardard manner in which the verses and chapters stand today. Thank you Elder Pratt.

With that said, in much all of what Elder Pratt did, he used his own judgment and inspiration. He was a great Book of Mormon scholar himself and exercised 'good' judgement, but no one is perfect. Serious students of the Book of Mormon who have studied it for any length of time with comparing of edition, have found some of Elder Pratts division awkward, as he has in a few cases divided sentences and thought related items mid course into not only, somethings different verses, but also into different chapters in the case of dividing paragraphs. But one of the more frequently found matters is the division of 'thought continuence' into chapters that once were in but a single chapter as in to case of the Tree of Life visions. Thus some insights of the Book of Mormon may be regained by reviewing the older text 'hot off of the press' so to speak.

Lehi's Dream - 1 Nephi 8
Nephi's Vision - 1 Nephi 11-14
Explantions - 1 Nephi 15
2 "And it came to pass that while my father tarried in the wilderness he spake unto us, saying: Behold, I have dreamed a dream; or, in other words, I have seen a vision."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:2)

"¶ And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:"
~ Old Testament | Joel 2:28

Joel's words may be taken to heart at any period when the workings of the revelations of the Holy Spirit are active and received by man. Applied to the latter-days, Joel's words also apply to Lehi and Nephi in their days of spiritual enlightenment.

29 And I bear record that I saw the things which my father saw, and the angel of the Lord did make them known unto me."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 14:29)

17 And it came to pass after I, Nephi, having heard all the words of my father, concerning the things which he saw in a vision, and also the things which he spake by the power of the Holy Ghost, which power he received by faith on the Son of God—and the Son of God was the Messiah who should comeI, Nephi, was desirous also that I might see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost, which is the gift of God unto all those who diligently seek him, as well in times of old as in the time that he should manifest himself unto the children of men."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 10:17)

Man Dressed in White ~ Spirit of the Lord

It is hard to say who Lehi's dream was guided by, but Nephi specifies his was guided by the Spirit of the Lord himself at first. And further evidence supports that it was the Lord who at began to take Nephi through his vision. That evidence in when Nephi notes that the 'spirit body' of the Lord was in the image of a man even as Mahonri Moriancumr had also seen and even had the Lord God Jehovah tell him in Ether chapter 3.

3 "And behold, because of the thing which I have seen, I have reason to rejoice in the Lord because of aNephi and also of Sam; for I have reason to suppose that they, and also many of their seed, will be saved.
4 "But behold, Laman and Lemuel, I fear exceedingly because of you; for behold, methought I saw in my dream, a dark and dreary wilderness.

5 "And it came to pass that I saw a man, and he was dressed in a white robe; and he came and stood before me.
6 "And it came to pass that he spake unto me, and bade me follow him."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:3 - 6)

1 "FOR it came to pass after I had desired to know the things that my father had seen, and believing that the Lord was able to make them known unto me, as I sat pondering in mine heart I was caught away in the Spirit of the Lord, yea, into an exceedingly high mountain, which I never had before seen, and upon which I never had before set my foot.
2 And the Spirit said unto me: Behold, what desirest thou?
3 And I said: I desire to behold the things which my father saw.
4 And the Spirit said unto me: Believest thou that thy father saw the tree of which he hath spoken?
5 And I said: Yea, thou knowest that I believe all the words of my father."

Dark and Dreary Wilderness/Waste
[1 Nephi 8:4 & 7]
~ The Lone and Dreary World ~

Certainly when man finds himself outside of the presence of God it is a very 'lone' place to be. And this telestial state is quite dreary in comparision with the Celestial heights of God or even such as the Garden of Eden of Adam and Eve. When born into this world our spirit soul, comprised of eternal intelligence of light and truth combined with our spirit as having been born of our Heavenly Father and Mother, is placed into our infant temporal mortal body of flesh and bones. And further our mental conscience memory of our preexistence has had a veil of forgetfulness drawn over it. As that infant child we are quite helpless and without tender, loving and caring parents to look after us, we would be quite distitute. Sadly, as we grow up and learn of the things of this world, if we have not be favored to have found our relationship to God and Jesus Christ, our inner spiritual self can still be quite alone and quite helpless and still in a very dark and dreary set of surroundings, even a 'wilderness of waste.'

In Lehi's dream/vision he finds himself in just such a dark and dreary wilderness, even a 'waste' as it were. Certainly this life without hope in Jesus Christ for a heavenly future after death can be very cold and meaningless without any ryhme or reason to it. At least Adam and Eve had some amount of understanding to have hanged onto given them, for they were commanded to offer sacrifice unto God though they knew not exactly why. At that point they were no better off that the children of Israel in their stupper of knowledge situation when they had lost their greater understanding that their sacrifices instituted by Moses were indeed connected to the coming of the Messiah Jesus Christ. And to Adam and Eve, without that further light and knowledge, they too found themselves in a dark, lone and dreary world until an angel appeared unto them and taught them the meaning of their sacrifice and the atoning mission of Jesus Christ, their Redeemer who would come and deliver them back into the presence of God if they would be faithful unto the living of the commandments of God. (The Ministry of Angels, by Elder Jeffery R. Holland & Moses 5:6-8, etc.)

As Lehi's dream/vision progressed, this would come to yield that same degree of understanding that Adam and Eve had once again achieved, that is of understanding the Love of God and the ultimate answers to life on earth that are to be found in the condescension of God, the Father and Son, in thus providing man with that path of the atonement unto salvation and eternal life. In contrast to lost loneness and darkness of forgetfulness of life without God's presence and love, and further being inflicted by that darkness of deception and lies placed upon man by Satan, the light of Christ is quite white and glorious, even as that of the tree of life that Lehi's dream does lead to.

Large and Spacious Field

At least after Lehi's pray of faith unto the Lord the dark and dreary wilderness has somewhat transformed into a large and spacious field representing the world (1 Nephi 8:9, 20). And just as the 'Tree of Life' was found in the midst of the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:9), so it would seem that if one will search it out on earth, it is still to be found in the 'midst' of the earth as well. And though men are only kept from it for they know not where it may be found, the steps of progression toward it are laid out in Lehi's dream, that being the prayers of faith and a life of living by the very Word of God on the path that leads thereto.

7 And it came to pass that as I followed him I beheld myself that I was in a dark and dreary waste.
8 And after I had traveled for the space of many hours in darkness, I began to pray unto the Lord that he would have mercy on me, according to the multitude of his tender mercies.
9 And it came to pass after I had prayed unto the Lord I beheld a large and spacious field.
10 And it came to pass that I beheld a tree, whose fruit was desirable to make one happy."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:7-10)
4 And the Spirit said unto me: Believest thou that thy father saw the tree of which he hath spoken?
5 And I said: Yea, thou knowest that I believe all the words of my father.
6 And when I had spoken these words, the Spirit cried with a loud voice, saying: Hosanna to the Lord, the most high God; for he is God over all the earth, yea, even above all. And blessed art thou, Nephi, because thou believest in the Son of the most high God [Elohim]; wherefore, thou shalt behold the things which thou hast desired.
7 And behold this thing shall be given unto thee for a sign, that after thou hast beheld the tree which bore the fruit which thy father tasted, thou shalt also behold a man descending out of heaven, and him shall ye witness; and after ye have witnessed him ye shall bear record that it is the Son of God.
8 And it came to pass that the Spirit said unto me: Look! And I looked and beheld a tree; and it was like unto the tree which my father had seen; and the beauty thereof was far beyond, yea, exceeding of all beauty; and the whiteness thereof did exceed the whiteness of the driven snow."

12 And as I partook of the fruit thereof it filled my soul with exceedingly great joy; wherefore, I began to be desirous that my family should partake of it also; for I knew that it was desirable above all other fruit."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:11-12)
8 And it came to pass that the Spirit said unto me: Look! And I looked and beheld a tree; and it was like unto the tree which my father had seen; and the beauty thereof was far beyond, yea, exceeding of all beauty; and the whiteness thereof did exceed the whiteness of the driven snow."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 11:8)
36 Wherefore, the wicked are rejected from the righteous, and also from that tree of life, whose fruit is most precious and most desirable above all other fruits; yea, and it is the greatest of all the gifts of God. And thus I spake unto my brethren. Amen."

More To Come on the Meaning of the Tree of Life

A Virgin Fair and White
Most Beautiful Above All

Nephi's Question

When asked what Nephi wants to know it is the interpretation of the tree his father saw. The Tree of Life is the central figure of the dream/vision of the Tree of Life. Over the course of Nephi's vision he is not given the opportunity nor does Nephi ask any other question during the remainder of the vision he receives. He is asked questions that seem to determine what he is shown or not shown. These facts are significant as to the extent and meaning of the symbolic representation of the Tree of Life. The whole of Nephi's vision centers on the interpretation of the Tree of Life, which his quide equates to the 'Condescension of God.'
9 "And it came to pass after I had seen the tree, I said unto the Spirit: I behold thou hast shown unto me the tree which is precious above all.
10 "And he said unto me: What desirest thou?
11 "And I said unto him: To know the interpretation thereof—for I spake unto him as a man speaketh; for I beheld that he was in the form of a man; yet nevertheless, I knew that it was the Spirit of the Lord*; and he spake unto me as a man speaketh with another.
12 "And it came to pass that he said unto me: Look! And I looked as if to look upon him, and I saw him not; for he had gone from before my presence*.
13 "And it came to pass that I looked and beheld the great city of Jerusalem, and also other cities. And I beheld the city of Nazareth; and in the city of Nazareth I beheld a virgin, and she was exceedingly fair and white.
14 "And it came to pass that I saw the heavens open; and an angel came down and stood before me; and he said unto me: Nephi, what beholdest thou?
15 "And I said unto him: A virgin, most beautiful and fair above all other virgins.
16 "And he said unto me: Knowest thou the condescension of God?
17 "And I said unto him: I know that he loveth his children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things^.
* This first 'messenger' who has appeared unto Nephi is Jehovah, the then Spirit God of the Old Testament who is the same as Jesus Christ. He has been known by the name of Jehosuha from before the foundation of the world, Jehoshua being that same name in the Greek as transliterated in the English Bible as Jesus. And Nephi has noted that it was the Spirit of the Lord. A further Book of Mormon testimony to this is given to Mahonri Moriancumr, the brother of Jared, in the thrid chapter of Ether about the time of the Tower of Babel. After telling Nephi to 'Look!' one more time, Jehovah removes himself from Nephi's presence and after Nehpi sees the virgin Mary, another 'messenger' from God will continue Nephi's vision tour of the Tree of Life.
^ After being asked the question 'Knowest thou the condescension of God?' Nephi gives an adequate and an honest answer. He first states that he knows that God loves his children. This but generally covers the question because indeed God's condescension is done because God does love his children. But Nephi continued answer is more to the truth of Nephi's understanding as to the 'Condescension of God.' That is, Nephi does not know the meaning of all things. He will not know that until after finishing seeing the vision, the vision of 'all things.'

Knowest Thou the Condescension of God?
~ The Love of God Overlay Explanation ~

The meaning of the 'tree' as the 'Love of God' is adequate but hardly complete.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotton Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." ~ New Testament | John 3:16

This scriptural verse is a more complete meaning of the tree, from the perspective that God the Father's gift to the world is that of His son Jehovah/Jesus Christ. Yet this is but from that perspective of the Father's part in the 'Condescension of God.' It is yet to be covered from the full extent of the Condescension of God from the perspective of Jehovah the God of the Old Testament who is the same as Jesus Christ who did condescend below all things by sacrificing himself for the sins of the world. And therein is eternal life and the life that is symbolic tree as to what is given to man.

Overlaid upon the Tree of Life dream platform as given to Nephi, comes a more complete understanding of the Tree of Life's interpretation and meaning. It is the Gift of Christ unto the world that will receive it. Nephi did not relate all that Lehi had spoken and written, so we do not know the full extent of what Lehi did and/or did not see in his dream/vision of the Tree of Life. Neither do you know all that Lehi did know and understand before, after and throughout. For example did Lehi already know or have a fuller answer to 'Knowest Thou the Condescension of God?' Lehi was a prophet, and he ought to be given full benefit of knowing all that his prophet son Nephi did know and understand. But for sure Nephi sees here a full meaning of the Tree of Life, that it is the Gift of the Son of God, that living water that is given unto man for the redemption of man that he might gain eternal life and immortality, which is the very work and glory of God (Moses 1:39).

And just perhaps, the manner of Lehi's Dream as told upon the small plates of Nephi is after the manner of the parables of Christ, which were given to be understood according to the spirits workings within the hearts and minds of men. That is they were not to be fully understood until one was so prepared to understand them as further given to a man to so understand by the whisperings of the Spirit of God.

All said here is incomplete. So stay tuned for a 'more complete' meaning of the 'Tree of Life' as the 'Condescension of God.'

Meaning of the Tree

"Knowest thou the meaning of the tree which thy father saw?" Nephi asked to know the meaning of the tree which his father saw. After seeming the birth of Christ as the Condescension of God, did Nephi grasp the meaning of the Tree of Life? Remember that when Nephi first asked to know the meaning of the tree, he was asked the 'leading informative question' if he knew the 'Condescension of God?' Did he now fully know that Jehovah's coming to earth and his related mission was the fuller meaning of the 'Tree of Life' that is the 'Condescension of God?'

Nephi's answer is expanded as he states, "Yea, it is the love of God, which sheddeth itself abroad in the hearts of the children of men... ." This would do for a Christmas time answer and is such as Dicken's little book 'A Christmas Carol.' But it is yet an answer not complete in understanding. From what happens next and continues on in Nephi's vision, it ought to be understood that it is not yet a complete understood either by Nephi or by those who merely merrily have 'Merry Christmas' upon their lips at Christmas time, but fail upon the matter the rest of the year. Good will toward men is only a part of the story. So still stay tuned.

Condescension of God

18 "And he said unto me: Behold, the virgin whom thou seest is the mother of the Son** of God, after the manner of the flesh.
19 "And it came to pass that I beheld that she was carried away in the Spirit; and after she had been carried away in the Spirit for the space of a time the angel spake unto me, saying: Look!
20 "And I looked and beheld the virgin again, bearing a child in her arms.
21 "And the angel said unto me: Behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Son of the Eternal Father! Knowest thou the meaning of the tree which thy father saw?
22 "And I answered him, saying: Yea, it is the love of God, which sheddeth itself abroad in the hearts of the children of men; wherefore, it is the most desirable above all things.
23 "And he spake unto me, saying: Yea, and the most joyous to the soul.
~ (Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 11:9-23)

** In the 1830 Edition of the Book of Mormon the verse that spoke of Mary stated she was the 'mother of God.' All men do not understand the true nature of God. To some it may sound too 'Cahtolic' as 'Mary Mother of God' rather than she was the 'mother of the Son of God.' Fact is either way it is a correct and a true statement. But it doesn't avoid 'confussion' of first time readers of the Book of Mormon. By inspiration Joseph Smith softened the phrase by adding the words 'of the Son' so that 'mother of God' would read 'mother of the Son of God'.

By doing this it seems to 'veil' the knowing and understanding that the 'Condescension of God' was that Jehovah, the Old Testament God, 'Concescended as God' being also Jesus Christ. This was so he could redeem his people. Yes, Jehovah, who is the same as Jesus Christ came to earth. That 'Spirit God' of the Old Testament, Jehovah, the God of Moses took upon himself a mortal tabernacle. There are a number who do not like that, including the Jews.

The gospel plan is for all righteous children of Elohim to take upon themselves a body of flesh. Jehovah's sacrifice was to take upon himself the sins of all, to suffer, bleed and die as Jesus Christ our Savior.

13 "And as I cast my eyes round about, that perhaps I might discover my family also, I beheld a river of water; and it ran along, and it was near the tree of which I was partaking the fruit."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:13)

Lehi's Family Interest

Lehi's concern is with partaking of the fruit of the Tree of Life, the Gospel of Christ, which is the Plan of Happiness. And Lehi's concerns are very envolved as to him it was a personal experience of life that he was a participant in. And he was further to be concerned with the welfare of his family who have his full attention. Thus Lehi does misses a couple of items of which Nephi as an observer does notice. Nephi explains that Lehi was 'swallowed up in other thing that he beheld not such other matters.'

16 "And the angel spake unto me, saying: Behold the fountain of filthy water which thy father saw; yea, even the river of which he spake; and the depths thereof are the depths of hell.
17 "And the mists of darkness are the temptations of the devil, which blindeth the eyes, and hardeneth the hearts of the children of men, and leadeth them away into broad roads, that they perish and are lost.
18 "And the large and spacious building, which thy father saw, is vain imaginations and the pride of the children of men. And a great and a terrible gulf divideth them; yea, even the word of the justice of the Eternal God, and the Messiah who is the Lamb of God, of whom the Holy Ghost beareth record, from the beginning of the world until this time, and from this time henceforth and forever."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 12:16-18)
26 "And they said unto me: What meaneth the river of water which our father saw?
27 "And I said unto them that the water which my father saw was filthiness; and so much was his mind swallowed up in other things that he beheld not the filthiness of the water.
28 "And I said unto them that it was an awful gulf, which separated the wicked from the tree of life, and also from the saints of God.
29 "And I said unto them that it was a representation of that awful hell, which the angel said unto me was prepared for the wicked."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 15:26-29)

Other Features of the Dream/Vision

Filthy Fountain/River of Water: filthiness, (gulf and river thereof representation of awful hell prepared for the wicked)

Mists of Darkness: temptation of the devil which blindeth the eyes and hardeneth the hearts of men

Broad Roads: that the devil lead men away into that they perish and are lost

Large and Spacious Building: Vain imaginantions, pride of the children of men,

Great and Terrible Gulf: Justice of God divides man from God - separated the wicked from the tree of life (must come unto Christ and repent to bridge the 'Gulf' between heaven and earth - the spacious building) the gulf and its river combine to represent hell

Fountain of Living Water or Tree of Life: representation of the Love of God - Condescension of God - Gospel Plan of God

14 "And I looked to behold from whence it came; and I saw the head thereof a little way off; and at the head thereof I beheld your mother Sariah, and Sam, and Nephi; and they stood as if they knew not whither they should go.
15 And it came to pass that I beckoned unto them; and I also did say unto them with a loud voice that they should come unto me, and partake of the fruit, which was desirable above all other fruit.
16 And it came to pass that they did come unto me and partake of the fruit also.
17 And it came to pass that I was desirous that Laman and Lemuel should come and partake of the fruit also; wherefore, I cast mine eyes towards the head of the river, that perhaps I might see them.
18 And it came to pass that I saw them, but they would not come unto me and partake of the fruit."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:14 - 18)

Sariah, Sam and Nephi hearken unto Lehi and come and partake of the fruit of the tree.

Laman and Lemuel would not hearken unto Lehi and come and partake of the fruit.

The 'Iron Rod' is the Word of God

The 'Iron Rod' is the Word of God and whoso would hearken unto the word of God and hold fast to it would never perish, neither could the temptations and fiery darts of the adversary overpower them to blind and lead them away. The Rod of Iron extended along the bank of the river. It was so positioned to be both a gaurd rail and a rescue rail; in both cases always present and ready to grasp onto and to guide man to the Tree of Life. If man will learn to humble himself and come unto the Lord and live by his Word, his commandments, then that man may have claim upon the atonement made for the remission of his sins and the acceptance of God unto Eternal Life.

19 "And I beheld a rod of iron, and it extended along the bank of the river, and led to the tree by which I stood."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:19)
25 "And it came to pass that I beheld that the rod of iron, which my father had seen, was the word of God, which led to the fountain of living waters, or to the tree of life; which waters are a representation of the love of God; and I also beheld that the tree of life was a representation of the love of God."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 11:25)
23 "And they said unto me: What meaneth the rod of iron which our father saw, that led to the tree?
24 "And I said unto them that it was the word of God; and whoso would hearken unto the word of God, and would hold fast unto it, they would never perish; neither could the temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto blindness, to lead them away to destruction."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 15:23-24)

Knowest Thou the Condescension of God?
~ Contintued Overlay ~

After Giving Nephi the first ensight into the Condescension of God, that is Jehovah as Jesus Christ coming dowm form his throne on high to redeem his people. The now angel guide continues to further Nephi's understanding that it envolved the entire ministry of Jesus Christ of the taking the gospel to the people and further installing his early church among them then. And given to Nephi's understanding was further that the early church would fall into corrupted belief as it leaders fell into the entrapings of the Devil.

30 "And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me again, saying: Look! And I looked, and I beheld the heavens open again, and I saw angels descending upon the children of men; and they did minister unto them.
31 "And he spake unto me again, saying: Look! And I looked, and I beheld the Lamb of God going forth among the children of men. And I beheld multitudes of people who were sick, and who were afflicted with all manner of diseases, and with devils and unclean spirits; and the angel spake and showed all these things unto me. And they were healed by the power of the Lamb of God; and the devils and the unclean spirits were cast out.
32 "And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me again, saying: Look! And I looked and beheld the Lamb of God, that he was taken by the people; yea, the Son of the everlasting God was judged of the world; and I saw and bear record.
33 "And I, Nephi, saw that he was lifted up upon the cross and slain for the sins of the world.
34 "And after he was slain I saw the multitudes of the earth, that they were gathered together to fight against the apostles of the Lamb; for thus were the twelve called by the angel of the Lord."

Ministry of Jesus Christ
20 "And I also beheld a strait and narrow path, which came along by the rod of iron, even to the tree by which I stood; and it also led by the head of the fountain, unto a large and spacious field, as if it had been a world.
21 "And I saw numberless concourses of people, many of whom were pressing forward, that they might obtain the path which led unto the tree by which I stood.
22 "And it came to pass that they did come forth, and commence in the path which led to the tree.
23 "And it came to pass that there arose a mist of darkness; yea, even an exceedingly great mist of darkness, insomuch that they who had commenced in the path did lose their way, that they wandered off and were lost."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:20-23)
17 "And the mists of darkness are the temptations of the devil, which blindeth the eyes, and hardeneth the hearts of the children of men, and leadeth them away into broad roads, that they perish and are lost."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 12:17)

Great Mist of Darkness
There was an exceedingly great mist of darkness that filled the earth during the Great Apostasy from the Early Christian Church. Men were led into various broad paths of doctrinal corruption. It was one of the most deceitful ploys of the devil where men in authority led the people astray while all the time many of those people considered themselves in the right ways of Christ. The people were not allowed to read the Word of God or even own a Bible. False doctrines were dictated to them.

Numberless Concourses
Numberless Concourse are led in many various broad paths of world causes by the devil. Any such direction and/or situation that does not lead men to God according to his true Word is of the devil and can be considered as that which is of the church of the devil wherein men ignorantly led are lost.

The Great and Spacious Building
~ The Pride of the World ~

It is the pride and the erogants of the innovative know it all without God world that will divide man from God. Satan will use the self conciet of man to think himself the better.

24 "And it came to pass that I beheld others pressing forward, and they came forth and caught hold of the end of the rod of iron; and they did press forward through the mist of darkness, clinging to the rod of iron, even until they did come forth and partake of the fruit of the tree.
25 "And after they had partaken of the fruit of the tree they did cast their eyes about as if they were ashamed.
26 "And I also cast my eyes round about, and beheld, on the other side of the river of water, a great and spacious building; and it stood as it were in the air, high above the earth."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:24 - 26)
35 "And the multitude of the earth was gathered together; and I beheld that they were in a large and spacious building, like unto the building which my father saw. And the angel of the Lord spake unto me again, saying: Behold the world and the wisdom thereof; yea, behold the house of Israel hath gathered together to fight against the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
36 "And it came to pass that I saw and bear record, that the great and spacious building was the pride of the world; and it fell, and the fall thereof was exceedingly great. And the angel of the Lord spake unto me again, saying: Thus shall be the destruction of all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, that shall fight against the twelve apostles of the Lamb."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 11:35 - 36)

18 And the large and spacious building, which thy father saw, is vain imaginations and the pride of the children of men. And a great and a terrible gulf divideth them; yea, even the word of the justice of the Eternal God, and the Messiah who is the Lamb of God, of whom the Holy Ghost beareth record, from the beginning of the world until this time, and from this time henceforth and forever."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 12:18)

27 "And it was filled with people, both old and young, both male and female; and their manner of dress was exceedingly fine; and they were in the attitude of mocking and pointing their fingers towards those who had come at and were partaking of the fruit.
28 "And after they had tasted of the fruit they were ashamed, because of those that were scoffing at them; and they fell away into forbidden paths and were lost.
29 "And now I, Nephi, do not speak all the words of my father.
30 "But, to be short in writing, behold, he saw other multitudes pressing forward; and they came and caught hold of the end of the rod of iron; and they did press their way forward, continually holding fast to the rod of iron, until they came forth and fell down and partook of the fruit of the tree."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:27 - 30)
23 "And they said unto me: What meaneth the rod of iron which our father saw, that led to the tree?
24 "And I said unto them that it was the word of God; and whoso would hearken unto the word of God, and would hold fast unto it, they would never perish; neither could the temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto blindness, to lead them away to destruction."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 15:23 - 24)
31 "And he also saw other multitudes feeling their way towards that great and spacious building.
32 "And it came to pass that many were drowned in the depths of the fountain; and many were lost from his view, wandering in strange roads."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:31-32)
26 "And they said unto me: What meaneth the river of water which our father saw?
27 "And I said unto them that the water which my father saw was filthiness; and so much was his mind swallowed up in other things that he beheld not the filthiness of the water.
28 "And I said unto them that it was an awful gulf, which separated the wicked from the tree of life, and also from the saints of God.
29 "And I said unto them that it was a representation of that awful hell, which the angel said unto me was prepared for the wicked."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 15:26-29)
33 "And great was the multitude that did enter into that strange building. And after they did enter into that building they did point the finger of scorn at me and those that were partaking of the fruit also; but we heeded them not.
34 "These are the words of my father: For as many as heeded them, had fallen away.
35 "And Laman and Lemuel partook not of the fruit, said my father.
36 "And it came to pass after my father had spoken all the words of his dream or vision, which were many, he said unto us, because of these things which he saw in a vision, he exceedingly feared for Laman and Lemuel; yea, he feared lest they should be cast off from the presence of the Lord."
(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 8:33 - 36)

Lehi's Dream-Vision — Meridian Centered Jesus

As per Nephi's presentation of Lehi's Dream/Vision, and then Nephi's later vision interpretaion of such, that is the presented in Lehi's vision and the interpretation of such as given above, is centered upon the central theme of Jesus' Life in the Meridian of time. That correlation is drawn considering 1 Nephi 11 and a bit from 1 Nephi 12, that does parallel with the vision of Lehi as presented in 1 Nephi 8.

Chapter 11 and part of 12 of Nephi's related vision speaks to Nephi's receiving explanations of Lehi's dream. And they are very much Christ centered as Nephi is shown in the first part of that which he presents as 'Nephi saw the things that Lehi saw' (1 Nephi 14:29). From that centering of the vision in the meridian involvement of Christ's mission to perform the atonement sacrifice, which is a centrally essential event of the 'Condescension of God, Nephi is from thence in later chapters (12-14), taken into the furture of the Lord's dealings with Israel and that of the bring forth of the seed of Joseph in 'Ephraim' to the fulfilling of the covenant promise to Abraham.

And that Covenant promise to Abraham [of the fathers to the earth] is the taking the gospel to the nations of the earth. And though Nephi is mindset upon his descendants and brothren, the vision does continue on into that of John the Revelator and into that which Nephi is forbidden to write because John is assigned to write it, etc.

The scope of that continuation is but into the future of the world in relation to the administration of Jesus Christ unto the fulfilling of the Covenant of God with man on earth. And in that respect Nephi is seeing the continued dealings of Jesus Christ/Jehovah with mankind to the bring about the immortality and eternal life of man through the gospel of Jesus Christ, and it is that part of the Vision of All Things, which Nephi also alludes to.

Nephi had stated that, "... also others who have been, to them hath he [the Lord] shown all things, ... " (1 Nephi 14:26). In context, 'others', which is plural, must imply and allude back to Nephi himself, John the revelator just previously mentioned, and also very possibly Lehi as well, as is was Lehi's vision which Nephi was seeing. That is they being those who just had been recorded as seeing such from which 'also others' may stem from. And then to those others, they are said to 'have been' in the past who have written. Who these others could have been to Nephi are those prophets of the brass plates and also the brother of Jared, but only if Nephi had been show to see him. Nephi certainly has a great affinity for and with the prophet Isaiah, as he writes many chapters of Isaiah right into the Book of Mormon from the plates of brass. Thus Isaiah, and his 63 chapter vision, would be one prime canidate for being a member of those others. And if Isaiah as a prophet from the brass plates, then others of such might qualify as well.

What is here to be said before continuing on into the 'rest' of Nephi's vision, is that it is a continuation into the 'Ministrations of the Lord' unto his people in the purposes of the fulfilling the Covenant promises of God unto his children. Essentially it is that part of the Vision of All that continues on from the life of Jesus in the meridian of time on to the very endings of time in that which John the Beloved, the Revelator, had been also shown in vision.

1 Nephi Chapter 12

1 "AND it came to pass that the angel said unto me: Look, and behold thy seed, and also the seed of thy brethren. And I looked and beheld the land of promise; and I beheld multitudes of people, yea, even as it were in number as many as the sand of the sea.
2 "And it came to pass that I beheld multitudes gathered together to battle, one against the other; and I beheld wars, and rumors of wars, and great slaughters with the sword among my people.
3 "And it came to pass that I beheld many generations pass away, after the manner of wars and contentions in the land; and I beheld many cities, yea, even that I did not number them. Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 12:1-3

4 "And it came to pass that I saw a mist of darkness on the face of the land of promise; and I saw lightnings, and I heard thunderings, and earthquakes, and all manner of tumultuous noises; and I saw the earth and the rocks, that they rent; and I saw mountains tumbling into pieces; and I saw the plains of the earth, that they were broken up; and I saw many cities that they were sunk; and I saw many that they were burned with fire; and I saw many that did tumble to the earth, because of the quaking thereof.
5 "And it came to pass after I saw these things, I saw the vapor of darkness, that it passed from off the face of the earth; and behold, I saw multitudes who had not fallen because of the great and terrible judgments of the Lord.
6 "And I saw the heavens open, and the Lamb of God descending out of heaven; and he came down and showed himself unto them.
7 "And I also saw and bear record that the Holy Ghost fell upon twelve others; and they were ordained of God, and chosen.
8 "And the angel spake unto me, saying: Behold the Twelve Disciples of the Lamb, who are chosen to minister unto thy seed.
9 "And he said unto me: Thou rememberest the Twelve Apostles of the Lamb? Behold they are they who shall judge the twelve tribes of Israel; wherefore, the twelve ministers of thy seed shall be judged of them; for ye are of the house of Israel.
10 "And these twelve ministers whom thou beholdest shall judge thy seed. And, behold, they are righteous forever; for because of their faith in the Lamb of God their garments are made white in his blood.
11 "And the angel said unto me: Look! And I looked, and beheld three generations pass away in righteousness; and their garments were white even like unto the Lamb of God. And the angel said unto me: These are made white in the blood of the Lamb, because of their faith in him.
12 "And I, Nephi, also saw many of the fourth generation who passed away in righteousness.
13 "And it came to pass that I saw the multitudes of the earth gathered together.
14 "And the angel said unto me: Behold thy seed, and also the seed of thy brethren.
15 "And it came to pass that I looked and beheld the people of my seed gathered together in multitudes against the seed of my brethren; and they were gathered together to battle.
And a great and a terrible gulf divideth them; yea, even the word of the justice of the Eternal God, and the Messiah who is the Lamb of God, of whom the Holy Ghost beareth record, from the beginning of the world until this time, and from this time henceforth and forever.
19 "And while the angel spake these words, I beheld and saw that the seed of my brethren did contend against my seed, according to the word of the angel; and because of the pride of my seed, and the temptations of the devil, I beheld that the seed of my brethren did overpower the people of my seed.
20 "And it came to pass that I beheld, and saw the people of the seed of my brethren that they had overcome my seed; and they went forth in multitudes upon the face of the land.
21 "And I saw them gathered together in multitudes; and I saw wars and rumors of wars among them; and in wars and rumors of wars I saw many generations pass away.
22 "And the angel said unto me: Behold these shall dwindle in unbelief.
23 "And it came to pass that I beheld, after they had dwindled in unbelief they became a dark, and loathsome, and a filthy people, full of idleness and all manner of abominations." Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 12:1-23

6 "And it came to pass that I beheld this great and abominable church; and I saw the devil that he was the founder of it.
7 "And I also saw gold, and silver, and silks, and scarlets, and fine-twined linen, and all manner of precious clothing; and I saw many harlots.
8 "And the angel spake unto me, saying: Behold the gold, and the silver, and the silks, and the scarlets, and the fine-twined linen, and the precious clothing, and the harlots, are the desires of this great and abominable church.

22 "And I said unto him: I know not.
23 "And he said: Behold it proceedeth out of the mouth of a Jew. And I, Nephi, beheld it; and he said unto me: The book that thou beholdest is a record of the Jews, which contains the covenants of the Lord, which he hath made unto the house of Israel; and it also containeth many of the prophecies of the holy prophets; and it is a record like unto the engravings which are upon the plates of brass, save there are not so many; nevertheless, they contain the covenants of the Lord, which he hath made unto the house of Israel; wherefore, they are of great worth unto the Gentiles.
24 "And the angel of the Lord said unto me: Thou hast beheld that the book proceeded forth from the mouth of a Jew; and when it proceeded forth from the mouth of a Jew it contained the fulness of the gospel of the Lord, of whom the twelve apostles bear record; and they bear record according to the truth which is in the Lamb of God. 27 "And all this have they done that they might pervert the right ways of the Lord, that they might blind the eyes and harden the hearts of the children of men.
28 "Wherefore, thou seest that after the book hath gone forth through the hands of the great and abominable church, that there are many plain and precious things taken away from the book, which is the book of the Lamb of God.
29 "And after these plain and precious things were taken away it goeth forth unto all the nations of the Gentiles; and after it goeth forth unto all the nations of the Gentiles, yea, even across the many waters which thou hast seen with the Gentiles which have gone forth out of captivity, thou seest—because of the many plain and precious things which have been taken out of the book, which were plain unto the understanding of the children of men, according to the plainness which is in the Lamb of God—because of these things which are taken away out of the gospel of the Lamb, an exceedingly great many do stumble, yea, insomuch that Satan hath great power over them. 31 "Neither will he suffer that the Gentiles shall destroy the seed of thy brethren.
32 "Neither will the Lord God suffer that the Gentiles shall forever remain in that awful state of blindness, which thou beholdest they are in, because of the plain and most precious parts of the gospel of the Lamb which have been kept back by that abominable church, whose formation thou hast seen.
33 "Wherefore saith the Lamb of God: I will be merciful unto the Gentiles, unto the visiting of the remnant of the house of Israel in great judgment.
34 "And it came to pass that the angel of the Lord spake unto me, saying: Behold, saith the Lamb of God, after I have visited the remnant of the house of Israel—and this remnant of whom I speak is the seed of thy father—wherefore, after I have visited them in judgment, and smitten them by the hand of the Gentiles, and after the Gentiles do stumble exceedingly, because of the most plain and precious parts of the gospel of the Lamb which have been kept back by that abominable church, which is the mother of harlots, saith the Lamb—I will be merciful unto the Gentiles in that day, insomuch that I will bring forth unto them, in mine own power, much of my gospel, which shall be plain and precious, saith the Lamb. 37 "And blessed are they who shall seek to bring forth my Zion at that day, for they shall have the gift and the power of the Holy Ghost; and if they endure unto the end they shall be lifted up at the last day, and shall be saved in the everlasting kingdom of the Lamb; and whoso shall publish peace, yea, tidings of great joy, how beautiful upon the mountains shall they be.

39 "And after it had come forth unto them I beheld other books, which came forth by the power of the Lamb, from the Gentiles unto them, unto the convincing of the Gentiles and the remnant of the seed of my brethren, and also the Jews who were scattered upon all the face of the earth, that the records of the prophets and of the twelve apostles of the Lamb are true.
40 "And the angel spake unto me, saying: These last records, which thou hast seen among the Gentiles, shall establish the truth of the first, which are of the twelve apostles of the Lamb, and shall make known the plain and precious things which have been taken away from them; and shall make known to all kindreds, tongues, and people, that the Lamb of God is the Son of the Eternal Father, and the Savior of the world; and that all men must come unto him, or they cannot be saved.
41 "And they must come according to the words which shall be established by the mouth of the Lamb; and the words of the Lamb shall be made known in the records of thy seed, as well as in the records of the twelve apostles of the Lamb; wherefore they both shall be established in one; for there is one God and one Shepherd over all the earth.
42 "And the time cometh that he shall manifest himself unto all nations, both unto the Jews and also unto the Gentiles; and after he has manifested himself unto the Jews and also unto the Gentiles, then he shall manifest himself unto the Gentiles and also unto the Jews, and the last shall be first, and the first shall be last."
Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 13:39-42

1 "AND it shall come to pass, that if the Gentiles shall hearken unto the Lamb of God in that day that he shall manifest himself unto them in word, and also in power, in very deed, unto the taking away of their stumbling blocks—
2 "And harden not their hearts against the Lamb of God, they shall be numbered among the seed of thy father; yea, they shall be numbered among the house of Israel; and they shall be a blessed people upon the promised land forever; they shall be no more brought down into captivity; and the house of Israel shall no more be confounded.
3 "And that great pit, which hath been digged for them by that great and abominable church, which was founded by the devil and his children, that he might lead away the souls of men down to hell—yea, that great pit which hath been digged for the destruction of men shall be filled by those who digged it, unto their utter destruction, saith the Lamb of God; not the destruction of the soul, save it be the casting of it into that hell which hath no end.
4 "For behold, this is according to the captivity of the devil, and also according to the justice of God, upon all those who will work wickedness and abomination before him.
5 "And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me, Nephi, saying: Thou hast beheld that if the Gentiles repent it shall be well with them; and thou also knowest concerning the covenants of the Lord unto the house of Israel; and thou also hast heard that whoso repenteth not must perish.
6 "Therefore, wo be unto the Gentiles if it so be that they harden their hearts against the Lamb of God.
7 "For the time cometh, saith the Lamb of God, that I will work a great and a marvelous work among the children of men; a work which shall be everlasting, either on the one hand or on the other—either to the convincing of them unto peace and life eternal, or unto the deliverance of them to the hardness of their hearts and the blindness of their minds unto their being brought down into captivity, and also into destruction, both temporally and spiritually, according to the ecaptivity of the devil, of which I have spoken.
8 "And it came to pass that when the angel had spoken these words, he said unto me: Rememberest thou the covenants of the Father unto the house of Israel? I said unto him, Yea.
9 "And it came to pass that he said unto me: Look, and behold that great and abominable church, which is the mother of abominations, whose founder is the devil.
10 "And he said unto me: Behold there are save two churches only; the one is the church of the Lamb of God, and the other is the church of the devil; wherefore, whoso belongeth not to the church of the Lamb of God belongeth to that great church, which is the mother of abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth.
11 "And it came to pass that I looked and beheld the whore of all the earth, and she sat upon many waters; and she had dominion over all the earth, among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people.
12 "And it came to pass that I beheld the church of the Lamb of God, and its numbers were few, because of the wickedness and abominations of the whore who sat upon many waters; nevertheless, I beheld that the church of the Lamb, who were the saints of God, were also upon all the face of the earth; and their dominions upon the face of the earth were small, because of the wickedness of the great whore whom I saw.
13 "And it came to pass that I beheld that the great mother of abominations did gather together multitudes upon the face of all the earth, among all the nations of the Gentiles, to fight against the Lamb of God.
14 "And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the power of the Lamb of God, that it descended upon the saints of the church of the Lamb, and upon the covenant people of the Lord, who were scattered upon all the face of the earth; and they were armed with righteousness and with the power of God in great glory.
15 "And it came to pass that I beheld that the wrath of God was poured out upon that great and abominable church, insomuch that there were wars and rumors of wars among all the nations and kindreds of the earth.
16 "And as there began to be wars and rumors of wars among all the nations which belonged to the mother of abominations, the angel spake unto me, saying: Behold, the wrath of God is upon the mother of harlots; and behold, thou seest all these things—
17 "And when the day cometh that the wrath of God is poured out upon the mother of harlots, which is the great and abominable church of all the earth, whose founder is the devil, then, at that day, the work of the Father shall commence, in preparing the way for the fulfilling of his covenants, which he hath made to his people who are of the house of Israel.
18 "And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me, saying: Look!
19 "And I looked and beheld a man, and he was dressed in a white robe.
20 "And the angel said unto me: Behold one of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
21 "Behold, he shall see and write the remainder of these things; yea, and also many things which have been.
22 "And he shall also write concerning the end of the world.
23 "Wherefore, the things which he shall write are just and true; and behold they are written in the book which thou beheld proceeding out of the mouth of the Jew; and at the time they proceeded out of the mouth of the Jew, or, at the time the book proceeded out of the mouth of the Jew, the things which were written were plain and pure, and most precious and easy to the understanding of all men.
24 "And behold, the things which this apostle of the Lamb shall write are many things which thou hast seen; and behold, the remainder shalt thou see.
25 "But the things which thou shalt see hereafter thou shalt not write; for the Lord God hath ordained the apostle of the Lamb of God that he should write them.
26 "And also others who have been, to them hath he shown all things, and they have written them; and they are sealed up to come forth in their purity, according to the truth which is in the Lamb, in the own due time of the Lord, unto the house of Israel.
27 "And I, Nephi, heard and bear record, that the name of the apostle of the Lamb was John, according to the word of the angel.
28 And behold, I, Nephi, am forbidden that I should write the remainder of the things which I saw and heard; wherefore the things which I have written sufficeth me; and I have written but a small part of the things which I saw.
29 "And I bear record that I saw the things which my father saw, and the angel of the Lord did make them known unto me.
30 "And now I make an end of speaking concerning the things which I saw while I was carried away in the spirit; and if all the things which I saw are not written, the things which I have written are true. And thus it is. Amen."
Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 14:1-30
The Great things that God in his condescension hath done: "And upon the wings of his Spirit hath my body been carried away upon exceedingly high mountains. And mine eyes have beheld great things, yea, even too great for man; therefore I was bidden that I should not write them.
"O then, if I have seen so great things, if the Lord in his condescension unto the children of men hath visited men in so much mercy, why should my heart weep and my soul linger in the valley of sorrow, and my flesh waste away, and my strength slacken, because of mine afflictions?" 2 Nephi 4:25-26

Lehi's Little Symbolic Dream?

Somewhat of a Rant

Some seem to imply or even suggest or even state that Lehi's 'Little' Dream/Vision is that of but 'short' symbolic tour in and of it self and apart from Nephi's lengthier experienced vision. It is made out to be Lehi's short dream-vision, which Nephi's longer 'set of visions' take off from. And Nephi's later vision and gospel understanding are some how surpassing those of Lehi and and they are advanced forward beyond his father Lehi's understanding, Nephi having jumped above and beyond his father's level, by so leaping up upon that merely symbolic base that Lehi laid. I can hardly agree with that. Nephi clearly states that Lehi did teach and preach much which Nephi never did write into his small plates of Nephi record (1 Nephi 8:29-30, 36-38). And even when Nephi does record such, a part more of them are usually on his large plates record, which we do not have. And there is still a complete record written by Lehi himself that is referenced that one must consider. Nephi's account of Lehi's dream/vision of the Tree of Life may have or may not have been exactly that, no more or no less, than as Lehi saw or presented it to his sons in its degree of completeness, Nephi even has stated as much in the above verses cited. Nephi would have more of a propensity to record that which he himself did see first hand than that which Lehi related to him as then being second hand information.

When Laman and Lemuel asks of Nephi (1 Nephi 15L) what their father meant by this or that, it seems to be more of willing to ask a sibling over asking the father, whose answer would not be lacking but rather to be even much more than what Laman and Lemuel would have liked to hear or would want to let on to their father that they did not understand. Certainly Lehi knew exactly what he was inviting Laman and Lemuel to partake of, and it was not really a piece of fruit off a tree. Lehi knew that he was offering the gospel of Jesus Christ to his sons. Lehi had seen the coming down of the coming Lord in vision back in Jerusalem even from what Nephi has written in his small plates record. And there is really nothing that presents that Lehi did see and understand anything less than his son Nephi had received. That Lehi's dream was an incentive to Nephi to want to see and understand that which his father had already seen and understood is good and well. But there is nothing in that which sets out that Lehi had any less of an understanding of the word of God or in prophecy than Nephi.

When Nephi ends his 'shared portion' of his vision with his readers of the small plates, by the very nature of the small plates and what they state we are given to know that there is much that Nephi has not shared there on and not only that which he was told not to share. One statement Nephi makes is quite telling in this respect. Consider this verse from Nephi's record:

"And also others who have been, to them hath he shown all things, and they have written them; and they are sealed up to come forth in their purity, according to the truth which is in the Lamb, in the own due time of the Lord, unto the house of Israel."
    ~ Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 14:26

This verse is telling in many ways. Nephi is speaking of the Lord revealing unto others 'all things' and it must be presumed that 'all things' means 'all things'. When the brother of Jared was shown the vision of all, it was never stipulated that 'others' would not also be shown that vision whether in parts or as a whole. It was just that Mahonri Moriancumr was given that he was to write a record of the whole of the vision. That was later translated by such as Mosiah II and eventually released to the righteous after the time of the Lord. Yet it was sealed back up.

Also, Ether would most likely have had access to such in his preserving the Jaredite records. And if you take Moroni at his word, he prepared his small abridgment of the Jaredite record from Ether's record, though some suggest without proof or authority otherwise. And since Nephi made the statement in a manner that alludes to himself and also likely his father Lehi, that others beside himself, his father, and even John the Apostle are 'also' to be included in those others who have seen 'all things.'

Now why does Nephi have such an affinity for Isaiah's writings to the extent that so much of the book of Isaiah is just 'copied' over into the Book of Mormon from the plates of brass? I have to suppose that if you have seen the vision, certainly even such as a book as that of Isaiah has become plain and easy to understand.

Lehi can hardly be held to being the least wit behind his son Nephi in vision and understanding. And it is well that Nephi had seen 'all things in vision' himself and gotten that understanding first hand rather than to have had to wait for even the first edition of it in his father's book.

Lehi's Dream a 'springboard to prophecy?' No, at least not concering 1 Nephi 11-14. That would be more to having seen it in the same vision which his father Lehi had also seen, and just a matter of setting it out as it was in that vision so seen and experienced. But what is prophecy more than this? Will Lehi spoke much by the spirit and power of the Holy Ghost, but here in the account Nephi gives in 1 Nephi 11-14, the angel guide is giving Nephi the answers, the instructions, and the commands to 'Look' here and 'Look' there within the continuing vision of all, in order for Nephi to look and see it. And Nephi is seeing but what he saw and was told of by the angel and by the Lord in these chapters.

Prophecy? Yes, being that it is and was of the Lord, but that it was that of sight unseen in this case for those chapters specific to Lehi's dream? Likely not. And what we do have of Lehi's teachings and knowledge per what little we have in Nephi's writings, does speak to the fact that Lehi knew well all these things of God himself and did not rely on Nephi to prophesy them to him.

That Nephi's presentation of Lehi's dream in 1 Nephi 8 is a 'milk-toast' rendition is likely. That even Lehi did give it as such to the general audience of the encampment is further likely. That Lehi did see more and/or understood far more than he presents in even further likely. That Nephi is motivated by his father's initial presentation is for sure. Nephi wants to see it too and to understand it as well. Lehi has been seing visionary portion ever since at least Jerusalem in 600 B.C. That Lehi would not have need as much 'look-see' tour guiding is also to be understood, as Lehi has been the 'seeing' prophet for much longer than Nephi. But that Lehi has had any less of a visionary experience that Lehi is not at all to be derived. That Lehi saw Jesus and the twelve descending out of heaven in Jerusalem already is true. That Nephi sees it as part of the 'look-see' tour of 1 Nephi 11-14 is true. Does Nephi at this point 'presume' that he is some who such has seen all? 1 Nephi 14:26 states it that way. Does Nephi put forth that he has seen more than Lehi? Not at all. In fact Nephi's statement seems to include his father as well as such as John the Apostle and Mohonri Moriancumr and even others such as Isaiah. Is Nephi's vision a basis for any different understanding than was already had by Lehi? No. Is there evidence that Lehi has seen other things that Nephi does not tell about himself knowing? It could. (Lehi's understanding about the prophecies of Joseph and the future of his, Lehi's seed. Are all of Lehi's understandings presented? No. Is Nephi's vision of 1 Nephi 11-14 unrelated to Lehi's vision. No not at all. In fact Nephi is finding out what his father's dream/vision means and there is good reason to suppose that Lehi already knows what it means. Whoever has not seen the direct relationship between Lehi's and Nephi's visions are still having some catching up to do. Such as the fact that the large and spacious building is directly related to who and what the church of the devil is in all of its facets and aspects, that is everything that distracts from full and proper participation in the Chruch of God is of the Chruch of the Devil as will as now, then and in the future. To not conclude so is to fail to see the full spectum of just what the Chruch of God is and does. And what it does and does not included and/or exclude and the priorities attached there to. For example is football of the church of God or of the church of the devil? Obvious that becomes an issue of priorites and time management. Football if worshipped as to out of proper priority time endulgence with relation to the things of the kingdom of God is of the Devil. Football as a means to proper priority life goals is not. That's for example. Is dedication to attendance at the temple to the exclusion of providing a living for one's family of the Church of God? Not likely. The providing for one's family is an escential part of God's Chruch and Kingdom and there are proper priorites in that in the kingdom of God.

As for Christ's birth, baptism, ministry, and atonement, it is all a part of the condescension of God and of God's Love, for God so loved the world to provide for the salvation of his children. And it all fits into that consideration of 'all things'. That Lehi's vision of the tree of life is as much as a vision of all things as is Nephi seeing the 'future' is as much the same thing as is the need for the love of God, his atonement throughout all things. To cut that back is to deny that the tree of life which is Christ's work does not apply to all things from beginning to end. All things are set out before God, past, present and future and seen as one whole. So is Lehi's vision of the tree of life. So is Nephi's vision which is the same thing. Christ is the tree of life from beginning to end. He is all in all. And all things in him are. Nephi's vision was as much of the tree of life vision as anything is. All of what Nephi was shown, saw, and was told about fit as part of the vision of the tree of life, the gospel of Christ, that all encompassing work of God of bringing to pass the immortallity and eternal life of man. And it cannot be sectioned out as being a 'different interpretation' as it is all the same in one thing.

The birth of Jesus IS NOT 'an interpretation' of the tree of life symbol. It is a part of what that symbol entails. Just as the condescension of God is a part of God's love and God's love is the same as the tree of life symbol. God's love includes the whole of the life and mision of Jehovah who is the same as Jesus christ who is the alpha and omega, and the tree prepresents the whole of it. It cannot be reverse interpreted back out of it for then God's love, the tree the whole of the fruit is NOT complete. As a symbol we are not seeing a 'tree' as such, only what that tree in whole and complete does symbolize. To see anything less that from beginning to end, is to see less that what the symbol is symbolizing. And you don't work with half a tree symbol.

YES, the whole of the 'condescension of God is of the meaning of the Tree of Life. Lehi knew that and that is what he in truth was offering Laman and Lemuel, the gospel and its fulness. Not just Mary's birthing a child, not just Jehovah creating the earth under the direction of Father, not just the Final Judgment, not just Second Coming. Not just this or that. The Tree, that symbol represents it all. This is no new interpretation of the tree to God. To Laman and Lemuel maybe. But not to God and not to God's Prophets. Nephi would not think of it as anything other than to be exactly what the tree represented all the time along and no new 'future' prophecy of it. It was what it was on the table in the preexistence. It is that of what it has been all along in the final bar of judgment. It is not an expanded new interpretation not known. It is, was and will ever be all of what it all has ever been. When Lehi spoke it to Laman and Lemuel it was what it was, the whole of it, whether Laman and Lemuel comprehended then or not or even whether Nephi comprehended then or not. The only one that this could have been 'news' to at the point of presentation to Nephi, was to Nephi. And it was not some add on, new facet, or not previously meant or intended part or partial of it. It was what it was.

Perhaps it is but the wording that is poor. Nothing has 'sprung' from it. It was always what it was from the beginning. Perhaps a person's understanding of it has become more complete. But it was always everything, every element and every part of what it was. To spring from something implies added to or added upon. Nothing was added upon it. Nothing was added to it. Nothing was increase or decrease from what the full interpretation of it always was, is, and ever will be.

No intrepretaion did derive from it that was not already of it. It did not evolve. It did not proceed. It did not stem or grow out of it. It was alway right there. It was it all the time. It did not originate from it. It was it. It did not arise from it. It was already there. It did not emanate from it. It was there long before. It was there just the same as it was. It will ever be just what it was. It did not leap, jump, bound, vault, hop. It didn't even 'pop up'. It always just was right there, ever was, still is and ever will be just what is always has been. At best what Nephi received in 1 Nephi 11-14 was further enlightenment as to just exactly as to what it always was and that likley Lehi already knew about it. It didn't even emanate out of it. It was alway right there all the time. There was no new creation about it. All that was advanced was further understanding of what it already was.
