Barnes Family Tree
More About Our Barnes Families
compiled by Don R. Hender
While not of the 'break through' nature as with
the Eliza Ann West family which identifies and finds her
immediate family and then also extents the West family back
three generations and even such about aunts, uncles and cousins West families; the
new leads in the Barnes family has been of the minor details and of some cousin family
extentions. And thus we still begin with the James 'M' Barnes and Eliza Ann West family.

^ Thomas J. Barnes, son of James M Barnes and Eliza Ann West IS NOT the same Thomas Barnes and
family found on the 1880 Tyrrell County Census age 35, with wife Malissie, 38, dau. Ida age 11,
dau. Willie M. age 5, son Stuart L. age 2, and son Thomas C age 5/12 months. In 1870 Thomas J.
Barnes age 27 is at home with his parents and an Invalid at that time and NOT living with
a wife Malissie and family fathering a daughters. Quick and dirty shody genealogist need to read
both previous and current census pages to see just which families tie in together when they run
from one page to the next as they did in the 1870 census. As implied some 'genealogist' made the
two Thomas Barnes but one - THEY ARE NOT!
* When Washington County was created taking the then westren portion from the Scuppernong river
west, this divided 'Scuppernong Township', a sort of 'sub-county', so from there after there was
a Scuppernong area in both Washington and Tyrrell County. Henry Lewis Smith and Harriett Barnes
were married at the home of Dennis Barnes, which was in the township of Scuppernong, Washington
County, North Carlolina.

There are at least two separate Barns/Barnes family lines that do exist in the Tyrrell, North
Carolina arena. One is that family which comes through John Barnes Snr. and his wife Lovi West
(from a separate West line also) and then there is the Barnes family line from which our James
M. Barnes does descend.
Perhaps these families will connect further back, but at the time of concern they are at best
distantly related. Thus there are a number of marriages where the members of the one Barnes
family do marry with and into the other Barnes family. In fact there seems to be three such
marriages between the Barnes family of John Barnes and Lovi West and that of James Barnes and
Eliza Ann West.
