H E N D E R of S T I S S E Y
The recorded parish 'Hender' families of St Issey are of the 'Hendra' variety.
However, since St Issey lies across the River Camel just opposite such as St Minver where the
Hender family is in abundance, it is difficult to accept that the name is anything but a corruption of
the name Hender. There are enough locations and even families, which and who have their
name given at times as Hendra and at other times as Hender. And in one real perspective the two may be
looked to as being but the same. But there's the rub. Some set out the Hender family to be one
thing and others set it out to be of another. There are enough historical references in reliable texts to
understand that the 'Hender' name in its 'highest' deductions comes from the Welsh Hendwr or Hendower,
whose family sojourned to Corwall from Wales when David de Hendower married the daughter and heir of the
Cornwall family in the 1300s. While the elder Hender line, by which the 'honors' of descent are bestowed,
has come to an end with John and William Hender his father of Boscastle, by that time of the early 1600s
there were any number of 'younger' lines of the Hender family round about. By 'younger' one must understand
the system of the family heir being the eldest son. And the 'younger' sons of the family usually not being
the honoured bearer of the family entitlements, even though for sure they were still biologically and
genealogically members of the Hender family. That's on the one hand.
The other perspective and 'hand' is that the name may and possibly has developed as
a 'discriptive' name of meaning. Easy enough to be understood and generally agreed by all, the leading
part of the name 'hen' takes upon itself the interpretation of 'old'. But then the various attachments
to the latter part of the name has taken on a number of differnt meanings from an 'oak' tree to
a 'castle tower'. And often those who deem it their intellectual right to pick at and redefine one's
past into something it is not, set forth that the name is an old Cornish name combination meaning
'old water', whatever old water is. Myself, though I do not have the information to supply every generation's
named sire to myself, I have traced the family back to Wales and and their being descendants from the
Princes of Powys or 'middle' Wales, Wales having once been divided into three Principalities. The famed
Owen Brogyntyn is the family connection there. Whether Barons or Lords of Edeirnion, it is one such Baron/Lord
of Edernion, David ab Madoc Lord of Hendwr, who is he who married Sibilla Cornwall as 'The Montgomeryshire
Collections', Volume 7' presents her name to be. Other sources spell the name variously and even
some sources make her name into Margaret. But they all make her to be a daughter of the royally English
connected Cornwall family.

Note: There is only one Hender death and burial in Egloshayle which is not account for
by the presence of the family of William and Joanna Hender/Hendra, and that is a Sarah
Hender age 40 of Churchtown buried 3 October 1815. Whether she came by that name by
birth or marriage is not known. All other Hender deaths and burials can be attributed
to the presence of this Hender family, include the death of Catharine Hender.
* A number of 'pedigrees' have this Catherine Hender marrying Johnson Paynter. To
such I suggest the reading of this linked page Catherine Paynter's Father Is John Hender.

Though this Catherine Hender, a
sojourner, is considered to be
Catherine Hender of Lanivet as
proven by family land dealings.
She is put here as some think
her to be daughter of William
and Joanna Hender. She is not.
The actual proof consists
of a number of related land and
property lease transactions in
the National Archives that set
out that a certain right held
by Johnson Paynter and his wife
Catherine came to the couple by
way of Catherine's father and
grandfather, both named John
Hender and both of Lanivet.
Any genealogist worth their
salt ought to be able to go
through that evidence maze.
