The “Lands of Burlorne” Confirms:
Catherine Paynter’s Father Is John Hender!

There is a falsehood currently being perpetrated on the Ancestral scene of just who is the ancestor of Catherine Hender who married Johnson Paynter. Some like to ‘trim’ it up a bit to remove her from her name by spelling ‘Catherine’ as ‘Katherine’ with a ‘K’. For sure if you spell it with a ‘K’, you must know for sure, right? NOT. And why not take the true Catherine’s ‘baptism date’ of ‘18 Mar 1766’ to be the ‘birth date’ to use as a ‘stepping stone’ to YOUR preferred Catherine’s baptism date of 22 Jan 1769? Fact is, the true Catherine’s baptism was on 18 March 1766 at Lanivet and her father is John Hender, yeoman of Lanivet NOT William of Egloshayle/St Issey. Yep, it is a tangled web that they do weave to deceive in order to achieve the falsified pedigree, which leads to William Hender and Joanna Shepherd [Sheppard], who ARE NOT the parents of the Catherine Hender who married Johnson Paynter at all.

If they had not robbed the real Catherine Hender of her baptism date, their Catherine Hender would surely be exposed as the false Catherine according to her age upon her burial. That is why they ‘had to’ presume their birth date to be that actual baptism date of the true Catherine, which does fit the facts of the matter.

National Archives Proof

Here is the land transactions proof of it from the National Archives. That is to the question of ‘Who married Johnson Paynter? Was it Catherine Hender of Lanivet or Catherine Hender of Egloshayle?’ And the answer is Hender of Lanivet.

National Archives time table of identification: Highlights, underscores and {*} bracketed inserts, etc., supplied for emphasis and clarification.

This is some relevant information of the false family claimants. William and Joanna were married at St Issey, but they had lived at Egloshayle during the life’s of their last three children and can be shown to have died and been buried there. Supposedly this Catherine returns to St Issey, the land of her father’s birth and marriage, to marry Johnson Paynter. Though not perfectly clear on the marriage record, she is presumed to be that Catherine Hender, sojourner from Egloshayle, where she would have been born. One note is that there is a possible burial record under her name at Egloshayle that would make her decease at this later date. That seems to be a summary of the case for this ‘false’ Catherine Hender.

Now we will look at the parish information for the ‘true’ Catherine Hender. Remember we have just above taken her through all of the National Archive records which have clearly pointed her out to be of St. Veep. St Veep being that land of her mother’s and father’s marriage and likely maternal family relatives. As is the OPC transcribed marriage entry of Johnson Paynter provided below does not state from whence she is a sojourner from. The National Archives have stated her plainly to be of St Veep NOT Egloshayle at all. And they have also aligned her to be the daughter of John Hender Jr. of Lanivet and the granddaughter of John Hender Sr., also of Lanivet. In addition to the related parish records of this family below, there is another web page for Lanivet which presents even more information concerning this family’s ancestry and connections.

First is shown the marriage record of John Hender Jr. of Lanivet to Mary Bassett recorded in St Veep. Though they will live and have children in Lanivet, it is to St Veep which Catherine Hender will go and be account as then being of ‘St Veep’ and the spinster who marries Johnson Paynter in the records of the National Archives already presented.

And here below is the marriage entry of Johnson Paynter and Catherine Hender. Note, though at one time Johnson Paynter will be said to be of Little Patherick, at the actual time of his marriage he was a sojourner from St Winnoe. Catherine Hender is also noted to be a ‘sojourner’, meaning not of the parish of St Issey, but as transcribed, it does not state just where she is a sojourner from. The false ‘presumption’ would be that she was from Egloshayle, but the correct fact of the matter is that she was of St Veep at the time as presented in those land records of the National Archives. That is the factual sorting out point of the matter.
The map at the right is provided to visually follow Johnson and Catherine sojourning from St Veep and St Winnow/Winnoe, which are next to each other, up to St Issey to get married there. They pass through Lanivet and just north of it where their marriage related properites in Burloane are located.

This is Catherine Hender’s baptism record of 18 March 1766. It is NOT her birth record. That birth would have been at some date prior to 18 Marcy 1766. She was baptized at Lanivet to John and Mary Hender. Though not here on stated, that Mary would be Mary Bassett of the St Veep marriage.

Next is the baptism record of Catherine’s father, John Hender Jr., the son of John Hender Sr. and his wife Joan Badcock. The details of Joan Badcock and John Hender Sr. relationship are to be found on the Lanivet page and are not a direct relevant element of which Catherine married Johnson Paynter. What this baptism substantiates is that Catherine’s father is John Hender of Lanivet, being born/baptized at Lanivet, and that he would be the said father of Catherine as so stated in the records cited above from the National Archives.

Now below is a map of such Hender of Lanivet interest. A similar map was used on the Lanivet page as well. For reference as to where such locations of interest are, they have been underscored in a bright magenta color. Take some time and study the map. In doing so a number of place names, such as St Issey, Lanivet, Burlorne, Wadebridge, Burlawn, Burloane Tregoose and the like will be noted with some further added locations such as Egloshayle, St Breock, Bodmin and Bodwannick. These are additional names which relate to the Hender family of Lanivet.

And Here's A Topper

[John Hender's Will and Lands of Burlorne]

So far what has been presented is undisputable evidence from the National Archives that the dealings in the land of Burlorne, is that by which Johnson Paynter and his wife Catherine Hender came by from Catherine's father and grandfather, both named John Hender, and both of Lanivet. And we have reviewed both the false Catherine Hender's family relevant vital documents, and the 'true' Catherine Hender's relevant vital documents. But here now is what ought to be the final 'nail in the box'. The will of John Hender Sr. of Lanivet so states that he is leaving various lands in the village of Burloane to his four grandchildren, the sons and daughter of John Hender Jr., his son if whom Thomas and Catherine found in the Nathinal Archives records are the eldest. A transcription of that will can be found at this link.

Along with that will, and the National Archives records, they answer many questions concerning this family, such as who was John Hender Sr.'s wife, she being Joan Badcock of St. Breock. It is good reading as further additional evidence, which should put this all away and for sure without question. Also the Lanivet web page concerning this family is good reading for finding more details concerning the Hender family of Lanivet and there are further links to further information to be found there as well.
