Hender Families of Lanteglos by Camelford

Prepared, Compiled and Annotated by Don R. Hender

One often hears that the family of ' Hender has become extinct. That reference usually speaks of the Hendour or Hender family of Brannel or the John Hender Esq. family of Bottrel Castle. And in one sense that is so, that the legacy inheritances associated with the Hender ties to 'Royalty' have passed by female members of the 'heir' family, the daughter of Richard Hender of Brannel and the four daughters of John Hender of Boscastle and their associations with the Hender crest or coat of arms which was so 'quartered' by the females of Hender to married into the other such families. But the truth of the matter is that there are many 'younger branches' of the family of Hender still existant today. As pointed out in the 1820 text by C.S. Gilbert, 'An Historical Survey of the County of Cornwall', as of the date of the writing of that text there were 'younger branches', families of the non-heir mainline Hender families so mentioned, who 'survived' in the vicinity of Camelford. Now Lanteglos by Camelford is very much in the 'vicinity' of Camelford, as are a great number of surrounding Parishes and people do move about even to the extend that the world over there are families of Hender who do trace themselves back to their Hender ties in Cornwall.

Such records of the 1200s, 1300s, 1400, and even 1500s and 1600s are scarce. Even the Hender family of Boscastle had a few generations of Hender families unnamed when they were granted to adopt to themselves the family crest and arms of Hender. So the changes of any modern Hender family finding all there Hender connections back to David de Hendower of Welsh Royal descent who married with the English Royal family of Cornwall, is not even slim and basically none. But it does not stop one from the adventure of searching out their 'roots'. And who knows, that one in a million chanced information may still be around some where and what better place to look the in Lanteglos by Camelford?

Many of the Hender families of the Camelford vicinity have themselves become extinct. Yet some have made it out of Camelford or Lanteglos and can be traced to such locations as Launceston. And while it is my intent to cover all such families as I am aware of, extinct or not. I will first begin with that which I have pertaining to the Hender family who made it out of Camelford and on over to Launceston. But I will not end there and there are family wills in and about Lanteglos, at least a couple of which I will also transcribe and present. The sources for these Hender families are many so I'll just begin with a simple pedigree brakedown of what I have concern the family out of Lanteglos to Launceston.
