The Richard Peter(s) and Elizabeth Turner Family
compiled by Don R. Hender
See 1620 Visitations of Cornwall
(Pedigree Furnished by Mr. Richard Peter, Town Clerk of Launceston
in The Visitations of the County of Cornwall p.608-609)
Now as Further Annotated from Such as Parish Records and Etcetera as Prepared below.
PEOPLE are more than just a pedigree.
But often that is the quick, though sometimes dirty, way to present a family
group. Quick because they can be presented in a very simple line pedigree of
some type or the other, horizontal or vertical, from the top down or from the
bottom up. Sometimes they are called a family tree, but it is a tree that
essentually has no leaves or flesh and meat to it.
And that 'tree' can be put together indentially or shoddily with grafts of those
who may not actualy belong to that family. Or there can be members that have been
pruned and are missing from the tree either through laziness and carelessness,
sometimes of wittingly design, or even innocently constructed from a lack of
readily available resorce information. This is the 'dirty' asspect of a pedigree.
They are a one look and admire wonder which may or may not be solidly back by
the factual matters at hand.
Deficiencies or even 'padded' pedigrees with additional people may partially be
caused by the nature of the records themselves. Or they can be caused by the
norms of the people that the researcher is not aware of, such as the use of
nick names as Jane for Jenny or Jenny for Jenny or even Fanny for Frances and
Betsy for Elizabeth. And there are the curse of cursive and being able to read
it with long 'Ss' and 'Fs' and 'Ls' that can loos like 'Ss' or 'Js'. And then
there are added, missed or changed letters in a name. Case here is the ending
's' of Peter as Peters or of Pter for Peter and so forth.
Reputable genealogist are sincere and honest and try hard to do the work correctly
and honestly. Sadly some just put together a product to sell or to make one's
self to be in the 'know' when they really are not. Self pride and ego can mar
a pedigree when one is initially presented as authentic but is later shown to
be in error, it may take years if ever for the ego and pride to bend to the
truth. Some never do and the product stands unchallenged due to the 'ivory tower'
cyndrome.
For instance, there is a frequent error in the presentation of Mary Peter's
family caused seeming from lack of information and/or from failure to study
out the details properly. And other just drop out a name here or there or
add a name here or there just to achieve the proper child count or even worse
to have or to falsify a pedigree just to have one either to possess or sale.
Jenny/Jane Peter is such as one that is dropped off from the family as happens
sometimes to the cabooses of a family group. Some may even leave her off because
they don't know what to do with her because of her surrounding facts, which can
be quite challenging and also humbling to admit 'I don't know.' And this though
Jenny Peter is included as daughter of this family in The Visitations of
the County of Cornwall page 608-609.
With all that said, to begin, here is a simple line pedigree of the family. Yet
it will be given from many backing factual details that will be given and if
necessary, linked to if the information overload seems to carry on a bit too much.

Note here how the census taker wrote the name Hender and how the transcriber, not being familiar with the
name did write the name 'Hender' and also note that the same must have been familiar with Davey to get it
right. Further the Richard J Davey is Richar P Davey as the census taker makes the same 'P' in Mary P
Davey's name as well.

Notice here that John Edwin Peter Davey is back home and now a schoolmaster after being away in 1851
as also is the father Thomas Davey. The transcription oddities here is that which was written as an
'H' is turned into an 'F' and that which looked more as 35 did come out correctly as 55. Perhaps the
transcriber did reason that a 35 year old would not have had a 26 year old son?

* Most set forth that this is his marriage to Elizabeth TOMS, as do I.
** Some have his death as early as 1881, which is not correct as he and his wife appear on
the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census records that are available. The most credible report is a
death date of 1923 (see below).
Just when Richard Peter Davey converted to being of the Methodist Wesleyan faith is not
readily known. There is presently no adult baptism found and he was appearently first
baptized Church of England as that is how it is presented to be in the OPC supplied records.
And presently there is no evidence that this couple had any living surviving children. Now
between 1861 and 1871 Richard is followed to have become a Wesleyan Methodist Minister,
processing from being a butcher to a congresional Minister leader.

With Thomas Toms being identified as Elizabeth Toms' father on the 1881 census, the only
Elizabeth Toms match found that matches living date to a 1836 birth date is one found in
Boconnoc, that being the one referenced above. There Thomas is the Head of house, in the
wife's position is Honour, and in the children's position, Mary Toms age 6 and Elizabeth
Toms age 5.

ED3 Wanstrow, Somerset, England 1881 Census - visitor (Church of St Mary) - Studley Farm
However the census was actually conducted on Sunday April 3 1881, Richard Peter Davey,
Wesleyan Misister seems to have been traveling that day and has been recorded in two
different households, his own and one that he had visited during the same census event.
ED8 Lyncombe & Widcombe, Bath, St Thomas a Becket, Somerset, England 1881 Census - 9 Forefield Place
If on any day, Sunday certainly is the day of the week that a Minister would be moving about.
In his own household which comes together from the faithful servant Sarah Jackman's present
to a very interesting revelation that Elizabeth's father is Thomas Toms, age 75 in 1881.
Perhaps what leads some to presume that Richard P Davey must have died 1881, is their lack
of ability to find him where he was at during the time of that census. The distance from Bath
to Wanstow is about 20 miles, a do able distance. And if the actual locations are just in
those two District and the actual placement of the two location within those districts
could even make it a shorter distance. As for 'Foresfield Place, it is right in Bath. Now
the 'trump' is that there was a railway that would run the distance that by automobile
today was about a half and hour, would make that trip in about an hour or so in 1881.
Wanstrow Primitive Wesleyan Methodist Chapel (1877 A.D.) is just around the corner and is
near Studley Lane and Farm. Richard P Davey, Wesleyan Minister, would have been on circuit
assignment from Bath by railway (with the Railway Hotel listed on the same Census District
3 of Wanstrow*—from Bath to Wanstrow Church & Studley Farm (near to Coles Farm) in Wanstow in 1881: The trip
was ably done with time to spare for Minister Richard P Davey to have taken on that Sunday,
April 3, 1881. The Census record
reports that he did, being listed at both locations that day.
Now back to the consideration of the father of Elizabeth Toms being Thomas Toms age 75 in
1881. That would mean that back in 1841 this Thomas Toms would be about 35 years old. Also
now consider what is meant by being born in Liskeard in 1836 when this Thomas Toms was age
about 30. Liskeard whether a registration district or Parish boundry, had began to include
many smaller communities reaching as far south as Morval, and as wide as from Duloe to
Menehiot and beyond. And thus the seach for this family may widen beyond just the Borough
of the city of Liskeard where the parish church is located. And when one reports this
place of birth, that is not necessarily the parish nearest them but what 'place' big and
wide or as small as it may be.
* The Census of Wanstrow District 3 discription reads: "Wanstrow - Civil Parish
All that part of the Parish of Wanstrow East of the Road leading from Frome
to Bruton inluding cottage on the Common Coles Farm Wanstrow Street both sides,
Studley and the ?Brundry? near Upton Noble also the Rectory." (The curse of reading
cursive resides).

1901 Somerset St. Decumans Willion Willington, Somerset
Richard P Davey, in his older age, cut such a figure and stature that he could no longer
be left just in Cornwall. And thus we find him living with his wife Elizabeth and their
faithful servant Sarah E Jackaman in Somerset, Decumans, Williton.
1911 6 Barnfield? Ter Liskeard Cornwall
Now there are bits of information contained upon the 1911 census that were personally
filled out by that can be noted and used in further properly identifiying certain matters
concern Richard Peter Davey and his wife Elizabeth Toms.
One of those matters it when were Richard Peter Davey and Elizabeth Toms married. The cesus
reports that Richard and Elizabeth were 75 years old in 1911 and that they had been married
for 50 years. As simple arithmatic calculation would indicated that 50 years prior to 1911,
is when Richard and Elizabeth were married (1911-50=1861) at age 25 (75-50). As noted above,
the idex of marriages may be used to review the summary of that marriage and to locate the
information that Robert Peter Davey and obviously 'Elizabeth Toms' were married in
the first quarter of 1861, January-March. If one were so inclined, using the referenced listing for
that event in the index and order and receive a certified copy of that marriage event upon
which would have been the father to Elizabeth Toms and to Richard Peter Davey. This would
perhaps help to find who Elizabeth Toms' family was.
The other item that is confirmed is that Richard and Elizabeth had not children. Under the
listing of Children born alive, living and have died, report is 'none.' Thus there is no
need to even attempt any such search for the possibility of this couple have children, a
family and posterity. I have to suppose that their congregations where their children and
families.

* When the number 1 is written with the top angle line is too prominant, it is mistaken to
be the number 4. Here the age of 41 fits beter the circumstance rather than just being an
out right error. But certainly with a moniker such as Richard Thomas Hender Peter, it is
the same person.
** Based only on 1841 Falmouth census record where listed at age 30 a Betsey Peters, a
Mariner's wife, with another Elizabeth Peters age 2. (dancing with straws in the air
genealogists) Lets first look at that 1841 census record of Falmouth.

Now, based on the 1841 Census record referenced, this Betsy Peters is but
a married name Peters and her husband the Mariner is the Peters. [STRIKE ONE]
Further, when looking up Betsy's calstock baptism and following that through,
she had different sibblings listed there than the Callington Richard and
Grace. See next:
Name Father Mother
Year Parish Forename Surname Forename Forename
1811 Calstock Betsey PETERS Richard Grace
1814 Calstock Harriet PETERS Richard Grace
1818 Calstock Richard PETERS Richard Grace
1820 Calstock Richard PETERS Richard Grace
Now the Calstock family starts with Betsey and addes Harriet in 1814, Richard
in 1818, and another Richard in 1820, which usually means the first had died.
So what is wrong with that? It would seem to indicate that Richard and Grace
moved to Calstock. Right? But if one continues in the Callington parish, there
are other children there, Mary in 1812, William 1815, Emma 1817, Martha 1819
and a George in 1826, a real caboose. Are Richard and Grace Peters so common
that there are two? Try three, there is another family Richard and Grace Peters
in Gwennap having children at this same time. It is one thing to shuffle these
two families in togther, but the person who adds Betsy of Calstock both cuts
the family off completely puting an end to both, neither of the continuing
families of Calstock or Callington. [STRIKE TWO]
Next question - Where did the family stay? In 1841, after Richard died in 1836,
Grace Peter became a Postmistress, and is found as such on the Callington census.

* My mama was always very sensitive regarding her early marriage despite the cause being partly
due to an abusive father towards her religion and such. She would always say she was married
in her 17th years, though she was just age 16 when married to escape her home environment.
Annabella/Arabella/Isabella Emma Cardew seems to have a similar problem of some kind as she
uses both alternate first name versions and also age reportings which range from 1844, 1845
and 1846. The parish baptism would mean she was age 16, in her 17th year when married. That is
under age in England.

Richard Thomas Hender Peter and Mary Grace Stephens Crabb Family
The 1851 census record will state that Mary Peter [Mary Grace [Stevens] Crabb] was born at Callington.
Perhaps she didn't reall know and just stated where she was at. Her baptism was at Stoke Damerel, Devon.
And though may will make her full name Mary Grace Stephens Crabe, I've yet to find it on a record that
way. Her parents were married at St Andrews, Plymoth, Devon on 28 February 1805 as William (Wm) Crabb
and Grace Steven.
Richard Thomas Hender Peter, son of Richard Peter and Grace Hender.
Mary Grace Stephens Crabb, daughter of William Crabb and Grace Stevens as noted by one entry. (Married
St Andrews, Plymouth, Devon, England 28 February 1805.)

William Davy and Mary Peter
Mary Davy nee Peter and Thomas Dennis
Thomas Dennis and Mary Hawke Families
There are three families involved in the following matters relative to Mary Peter, daughter
of Richard Peter(s) and Elizabeth Turner. What most fail to account for is the first marriages
of Mary Peter and Thomas Dennis. The are both previously married when they get marrired to
each other.
Mary Peter and William Davy: Mary Peter first marries William Davy/Davey.
They were both of full age, Mary Peter about 35 (1825-1790) and William Davey abt 33
(1825-1792). Perhaps that in part might be why they chose to go to East Stonehouse in
Devon to be married 19 November 1825. It is a common occurance for couples from Cornwall
to slip across to Devon - East Stonehouse / Damerel to get married. Both my own great
grandfather Philip Trout Hender and 2nd great grandfather Thomas Rowe Hender did so.
After their marriage, William Davy and Mary Peter conceived/born before Willian dies. She
was named Mary Davy who was baptized in 1826 and is who is the Mary who married John
Strout as Mary Davy. Quick, and excuse the term, 'dirty' or 'shoddy,' pedigree compilers
make this Mary Davy to be Mary Dennis though there is not to be found a marriage between a
Mary Dennis and John Strout.
Thomas Dennis and Mary Hawke: The surname of Thomas Dennis' first wife
Mary is Hawke, also phonetically spelled HOKE. SHE IS NOT MARY PETER. With his first wife
Thomas Dennis also has a family, a number of which are known and are displayed in the
simple line pedigree below.
Mary Davey (nee Peter) and Thomas Dennis: Thus as it is, the marriage between
Mary Davey (nee Peter), the widow of William Davy, and Thomas Dennis the widower of his
first marriage is at such older ages that no children are found of that second marriage of
both the parties.
Where the confussion comes in is when Mary Dennis is found in the house hold of John Strout
and Mary (Davy) John Strout's wife when mother and mother-in-law is labeled as John Strout's
'mother-in-law.' Now her name is Mary Dennis at that point, but she was not the mother of a
Mary Dennis, but of Mary Davy. The marriage record of John Strout to Mary Davy is listed
below in the supporting record entries.
- William Davy/Davey (1792-1826), son of Richard Davy/Davey and Mary Knight.
- Thomas Dennis (1780-1854), son of William Dennis and Catherine Whale.
- Mary Peter (1790- ), daughter of Richard Peter and Elizabeth Turner. [She first marries William
Davey and then marries Thomas Dennis as Mary Davy on 25 February 1830 at age 40 after
her first husband William Davy/Davey passes away. At the time of that marriage Thomas
Dennis is age 50 himself.]
- Mary Hawke, daughter of William Hawke/Hoke-Lewannick cb1741 & Honour HOKE/Hawke-North Hill cb1748

** Either the baptism year is off and is 1815 or the burial year is off and is 1816. Mary Ann Dennis
was born May 181?, baptism 26 Jun 181?, died Dec 181?, and was buried 21 Dec 181? at age 8 months.
There was a clerical error in writing and/or transcribing the year date. Mary Ann Dennis does not
appear with her family on any found record at an older age. Only Mary Davey is later there in house.

RD Rodd family of Trebartha
Ref No RD/557
Title Bond, estate of William Davey, :Lewannick
Date 20 Sep 1827
Format Manuscript
Extent 1 piece
Description Parties:
(1)Mary Davey of Lewannick, widow to (2)Richard Davey of Lewannick,
yeoman. Bond in £500 To abide by arbitration of Francis Hearle Rodd
and John King Lethbridge in dispute concerning estate of Mary's
deceased husband William Davey.
Note: This may be due to the step by step timing of the marriage of 19 November 1825 and
then the death, 24 May 1826, and burial of William Davey in 1826 only 5 months after
the marriage. And then the child and heir of William Davey being born in the same year
that William Davey was deceased some months later. She being Christian Baptized, 6 November
1826 at Lewannic. Review the sequence of dates above. It seems to be tied to Mary Davey
the daughter that Stray(er) Park in Polyphant and that which follows the family from Davey
through Dennis, and then to Strout. And the family grouping who subsequentually lives
together perhaps being further testament (see the census records below).
|
1841 Census Record of Lewannick - Strayerpark
This is a notable fact to concider in this progression of events. In 1826, Mary Davy
was baptized as daughter of William and Mary Davy whose residence was at stray(er)park in
Lewannick. Then in 1841 at 16 years old Mary Davy is still living at Strayerpark,
Lewannick. But in the household 'Head' is Thomas Dennis and his wife Mary, who is the same
as the mother of Mary Davey, who married Thomas Dennis in 1830.

Note: Part of the attachment of mother and daughter staying co-inhabitants of the same

to Strout could in part be related to the shared inheritance of mother and daughter from
the estate of William Davey, the mother's first husband and the daughter's father.
~ 1871 ~
The arrangements have changed and the family has moved to North Hill. Uncle Samuel Peter
died in 1869. Younger sister Grace Strout is a 'child's maid' or 'baby-sitter attending
assistant to the Hicks family children 4, 2 and 6mos. The two elderly siblings of Mary
(Peter Davey) Dennis and Jenny (Peter Garland) Hender have become Schoolmistresses living at Pryers.
And the Strout family of husband John and wife Mary, and their other daughter have a
household to themselves.

Note: The census provides a decade snapshots of a person and/or family through the years.
It can in and of it self tell a story and with additional attending facts and circumstances
further story elements can be added there to. Young Mary Peter's age followed that
common course of a woman's age over the years, at 16 she was 16, at 26 she was 25, at
36 she was 34 and at 46 she has there remained at 44. Sometimes in death the age returns
to the actual age, but even there it may continue on and give a bit of an often younger false
reading.

Upon the deaths of their parents and whatever their relationship was to Jenny Garland
nee Peter, Aunt and likely stepmother, by 1841 Jenny/Jane was now wife of John Hender,
saddler of Polyphant; and three of the children of Susanna and Edward Garland were
living in their own household at Coads Green on the census. But they were not left
entirely alone. Read through the 1841 census transcription and consider who is there
in the household with them.
Above Richard Garland, age about 24, married Mary Ann Cundy on 6 March 1841. The 1841
census was taken 6 June 1841. Richard and Mary were just a few months married and
settled into their household. One household over in on direction is that of John Peter, son
of Arthur Peter Sr. and wife and mother Ann Dawe who is in the household. Also there
is Arthur Peter Jr. son and brother of the aforesaid. One household over in the other
direction is that of Uncle Richard Garland with his wife Mary and who looks to be
Grandmother Mary Shovel, wife of Grandfather Richard Garland, deceased.
Beside Richard and his new wife Mary, others in his household are his younger brother
Edward Turner Garland and his Uncle Samuel Peter, a confirmed bachelor. The young
Apprendice Sadler would be William Worth Hender. Richard's uncle and likely perhaps
step-mother Jenny Peter Garland who married Edward Garland (1830) after sister Susanna's
death (1827). And after Edward Garland's death, Jenny/Jane Garland nee Peter next married
John Hender (1840) who was witness at young Richard's wedding just held in the spring. William
Worth Hender is John Hender's nephew, the son of John's brother William Hender the
Watch and Clockmaker of Callington (my 3rd greatgrandfather).

Mary Smeeth and John Hender John Hender and Jenny Peter Jenny Peter and Edward Garland
JENNY Peter, daughter of Richard Peter or Peters and
Elizabeth Turner, married a Mr. Garland. That marriage has not been found in Cornwall county
presently but the evidence of it is that Jenny Peter married her next husband as a widow
under the name of Jenny Garland, her last married name. (See the Hender - Garland nee
Peter marriage below). On that parish marriage entry of 1840, Jenny Garland's father was
properly listed as Richard Peter. And Peter is her maiden name.
John Hender has a parallel run as he married Mary Smeeth a half cousin through his mother
Sarah Adams, wife of John's father Thomas Hender as stated on the marriage entry. After
his wife's death in January 1840, John next married the widow Jenny Garland nee Peter, he
being a widower himself at that point. What is of interest here at this point is that
John Hender's sisters, Mary Hender and Grace Hender had previously married this Jenny
Peter's brothers, John Peters and Richard Peters, according to the name variation of Peter
and Peters.
John Hender's Perspective:

Whether truly longterm residents of Stoke Damerel, or like some of my ancestors [aka Thomas
Rowe Hender & Mary aina Trout, and Philip Trout Hender & Grace Chipman/Chapman], they have just slipped crossed
the county lines over from Cornwall to just inside Devon to get married at Damerel. It does appear to be the long
sought after marriage record of Jenny Peter and Mr. [Edward] Garland. In fact there is real likelihood that this
is the same Edward Garland who was married to Jenny's sister Susanna Peter.
Susanna Peter married Edward Garland on 7 November 1815 at North Hill. Then Susanna later died on 20 of
December 1827. Now just over 2 years later sister Jenny Peter is marrying Edward Garland as well. Jenny
would be a 32 year old spinster, 3 years younger than sister Susanna, who would be well aquinted with
Edward Garland and her sister Susanna Garland nee Peter. Coincidence or fact of the matter. What do you bet?
If it be the fact of the matter, Aunt Jenny will have become step-mother Jenny to her
sisters children, as many as 4 from ages 4 to 13, Richard age 13, Elizabeth Peter Garland
age 10, Mary Anne Peter Garland age 5 and Edward Turner Garland age 4.
It continues to build that Jenny Peter has a very close associated with this family. Jenny
becomes a member of the Wesleyan Methodists and is buried there upon her death in 1886 even
after her marriage to John Hender. This is just as the two family daughters of Edward
Garlands family are so buried Wesleyan Methodist. Also when enlarged the occupation of
Jenny's husband Edward Garland of the Stoke Damerel marriage is that of 'A Farmer' as is
that of Edward Garland the widowed husband of Susanna Peter, Jenny's sister. Further the
Hender family including John Hender, Jenny's next husband, and his family relations such
as William Worth Hender, feed into the life of family of the Edward and Susanna. William
Worth Hender is Apprentice Saddler in household of the Garland children including Uncle
Samuel Peter. And John Hender is one of the signing witnesses on the marriage record of
Richard Garland, the oldest son in 1841. There is nothing that comes to stand out against
it and all contributing evidences are in favor of the matter.
On the marriage record of Jenny Garland [nee Peter] widow and John Hender widower, is
found the two witnesses of Wm. Hender and Richard Garland. It would seem that Wm. Hender
is John's brother William Hender the Clock and Watchmaker of Callington and Richard
Garland would be the eldest son of Edward Garland and Susanna Peter, baptism 1817. And
he would be age 23 at the time of giving away his 'step-mother' Jenny Garland to the
close family friend John Hender, who is also a 'saddler' by trade. Add in the family
ties of the long since two Hender daughters to the older two Peter sons, and it is as
thought it is just one big happy family here. If all fits and nothing is out of place.
