Samuel Hender and Catherine Henwood
The Saga of Samuel Hender
The families of Samuel Hender are many in the Parish of St
Cleer. This presentation is concerning but one Samuel Hender in the long line of the Samuel Henders
of St Cleer. He is the son of Samuel Hender and Catherine Henwood and though this page primarily
concerns him, there are other pages on this site that will speak of
the Hender family of St Cleer and also there
is a page concerning the will of Samuel Hender
the husband of Cathering Henwood. The life history of Samuel Hender here sorted out is a bit
complex and some have not sorted it out properly, thus this page is set up to develop who he is and
who his children and families were. To this end census records, parish register records and a family
will, will be consulted along with a number of other sources of information and matters of factual
and logical deduction. It begins with the Census record of 1841 and the relations of those round
about him.
[Note: I'll not begin with the census and birth related records of Samuel Hender as they are
inconsistant. I'll approach that later in this presentation after some other later background
facts have been established. Like the 'maze game' which has you trace the route of Bugs Bunny
to his rabbit hole, it is always simpler to begin from the rabbit hole and work the maze backwards
to Bugs Bunny. I've found that, that little 'maze game' is designed to be trickier if worked
foreward rather than backwards. And so it is with identifying this particular Samuel Hender.]

This is the family of William Godfrey and Jane Lander though for whatever reason his age, like that
of Samuel Hender further below, has not been rounded down to the nearest 5 years, but rather 10.
For the single night of the 1841 census Catharine Godfrey, Samuel Hender's eventual second wife, is
not at home with the family but a number of her siblings are there. And either Williams's 1851 or
1861 age is off, as he is 54 in one and 69 in the other. According to his Parish Baptism, which we
don't have as he is reported as having been born in London in 1792, worked backwards from his said
death of 1876 in Bodmin at age 84. I've not seen that record of either. But the 1871 census is
consistent with the 1861 by putting his age at 79 then 1851 Census of Bodmin, which is consistent
with the birth year of 1792.

* Mary Lander, daughter of John Lander and Grace Spur and Catherine Godfrey daughter
of Jane Lander and William Godfrey were cousins. John Lander and Jane Lander were
siblings, a son and daughter of Anthony Lander and Margaret/Mary Rough.
** It ought to be made clear by the facts of the matter since after Mary Hender nee
Lander's death in September 1848, the Mary Lander Hender who was baptized on the
28 September 1848 at St Cleer was the daughter of Samuel Hender and Mary Lander as
so recorded in the parish register. After two years, Samuel Hender married as his
second wife Mary Lander's cousin Catherine Godfrey on 24 December 1850. Therefore
they 'family' as it appears on the 1851 Census consited of Samuel Hender and his
second wife Catherine just married on 24 December, less than a year, and therefore
the 2 year old plus child, Mary Hender who was with them on that 1851 Census was
Mary Hender the daughter of Samuel Hender and Mary Lander, Samuel's first wife.
^ Since Mary Lander Hender's baptism in 1848 was a 'private' baptism, much to do
with the fact the family was in morning because of the death of Samue's wife
Mary Lander who had just give birth to the baby. And thus when it came time that
Samuel Hender and Catherine Godfrey had their first child, Catherine J. Hender in
1851, Mary Hender who had only been privately baptized before was at that time,
with her new sister, baptized publically at the same time as her half sister. That
both daughters were recorded by the 'clueless' clergy recorder as being the daughters
of Samuel Hender and his wife Catherine is but a technical over sight or even
perhaps an acceptable matter of Catherine Godfrey accepting to be the mother of both
the child of her cousin and as well as the mother of her own child Catherine Jane.

* This is the same child and
daughter of Samuel Hender as is
Mary Lander Hender who was
privately baptized at the time
of the death and burial of her
birth mother, Mary Lander as
seen in the first column. The
fact that Catherine Hender nee
Godfrey is Samuel's 'present'
wife and living 'step mother'
or 'mother by law' of Mary,
that would be why she is
listed as 'mother' on the
record.
Remember Mary Lander and
Catherine Godfrey are cousin
as John Lander, father of
Mary Lander, and Jane Godfrey
nee Lander, the mother of
Catherine Jane Godfrey, are
brother and sister, children
of Anthoney Lander and
Margaret/Mary Rough. It is
all 'family' together after
all anyway.

- Some will still try to make there to be two Mary Henders in these families.
There is added evidence that this just is not the case. Samuel Hender's
dealings upon his death of 1867 at age 64 speaks to the fact that he is the
ONE Samuel Hender who is the father of both Mary Lander Hender and Catherine
Jane Hender and husband to both Mary Lander and Catherine Godfrey. His probate
proceedings answers the matter well. I quote from the realavant information as
given in summary by the Cornwall Council of records. Concerning the estate
and family papers it gives this discription of the matters involving both
'Mary Lander Hender' and 'Catherine Jane Hender', the two daughters of Samuel
Hender from his two wives:
"Parties: 1) Thomas Couch and Nicholas Borrow the younger, yeoman, both of St Cleer
2) William Marshall, esquire, of Treworgey, St Cleer; Reverend George Poole Norris,
clerk, of Roscraddock House; Reginald Rogers, esquire, of Carwinion, Falmouth
3) Christoper Childs, gentleman, of Liskeard.
Declaration agreeing to the setting up of a bank account in the name of 3) containing
£200, legacies bequeathed by Samuel Hender the elder to Mary Lander Hender and
Catherine Jane Hender for them to receive when they reach 21. This is being done as
1), the trustees of Samuel Hender the younger, have recently sold his real estates,
Tremellick and Petta or Petto Parks, both in St Cleer parish and Lankeast in St Neot
parish to 2). Recites: will of Samuel Hender the elder, yeoman, of St Cleer, deceased
proved 1 May 1855; will of Samuel Hender the younger, deceased proved 11th September
1867. Includes receipt of the deposit."
A short pedigree of some clarification will be made here to set out the identify of the two
Samuel Henders, younger and elder being spoken of. As there is a long line of Samuel Hender
descent, just to two herein involved will be given.

Reading what the Census records really tell you is not always that easy. There are a number of
places where errors may enter into a Census Record. Thus, while they are a good source of
information, they alone are not the untimate authority on the facts of the matter. Information
may have been supplied incorrectly, the initial recorder may have made a mistake or written it
poorely, the age and additional 'markings' that are common on the original handwritten Census
Form might obscure information recorded, the transcriber of the information into a transcribed
record or index may make errors. I've seen a number of such errors. And then there is the ever
'hopeful' researcher who is looking a one particular piece of information to fit into their set
of information. For example the first record highlighted in green may seem to a person who is
looking for Samuel Hender born/baptism 1803 to be just who they are looking for. With the known
general rule of age rounding down to the nearest '5' year interval, this Samuel Hender age 35
just fits the bill of actually being about age 38 (1841-38=1803), right? WRONG! Who this Samuel
Hender is, is Samuel Hender the son of William Hender and his wife Elizabeth whose baptism was
6 July 1806 in St Cleer (1841-35=1806). But you say, it really could be either one and if this
was the only record and source of information upon the subject you'd be making a fair and
objective observation. But there are numerous other sources of data and information to be so
considered before a real conclusion can be made. And to try to persue that couple of Samuel and
Mary as being married in 1841 at age 35-40 leads to where there are no acceptable answers as
there is a OPC supplied marriage for Samuel Hender and Mary Wevill in 1821 but then they'd both
be under age and that marriage record states that Samuel Hender's father is John Hender. And if
you look for a Samuel Hender born to a John Hender in the OPC, you're back to 1787 and that does
not match the age of 35-40 in 1841 either—DEAD END.
The second census entry for the family of Samuel Hender and Catherine would match quite well,
as Pitts Parks would match the 1851 Census same location but the age of Samuel Hender 'son' being
but 30 does not match unless you presume an age recording error somewhere. Off of a census record
2 out of 3 is really not bad. Parents Samuel and Catherine Hender, right—Pitts Parks,
right—age is off 'not' but if in error then still fitable. So if there is additional
information which can over come the 'age error' matter then this might be and actually does
turn out to be the proper fit here. And along with Samuel Hender still at home, there is also
Elizabeth Hender who is yet to marry Thomas Doney in 1846.
This is the family of Samuel Hender and Catharine Henwood as of the 1841 Census.

- This is the family of Samuel Hender, whose first wife was Mary Lander, and whose secondd wife,
Catherine Godfrey of Bodmin, is shown with him on this census. And Samuel's daughter by Mary Lander,
whose name is Mary Lander Hender, is shown at age 2, baptism 28 Septermber 1848. Jane Godfrey age
21, the Milliner, is Catherine Hender nee Godfrey's sister. Since Catherine and Samuel were not
married until 24 December 1850, the 'daughter', whose relationship is to the 'Head' of the house,
certainly is not the 'newly wed' couple of just a few months (the 'night' of the 1851 census was
30 March 1851). Notice that the previous decade aged 70+ Samuel Hender has retired from the 31
acre farm location at Pitts Parks and now his son, twice married is now running the farm like he
in reality probably was pretty much doing the decade before as well. The now shown 83 year old
Samuel Hender, widower, is shown to be 'just around the corner' so to speak at Tremillick with a
grandneice and granddaughter Catherine Doney. One thing a true genealogy researcher has to come to
realize is that these are people and there are 'stories' of their lives, which are being set out by
a combination of all the various records, data, information and facts. Further notice, that while
Samuel's age is still not entirely in sink with his true age of the 1803 parish baptism, it
certainly is closer and fully illustrates that his 1841 census age should have been reported as 35
(rounding down '38' should have then yielded 35). So the 1841 reported age was in error for whatever
cause or reason. Perhaps Samuel Hender is 'age sincitive' and doesn't want to be shown more than 20
years older than his second wife for some reason.
