BIBLE DICTIONARY ADONIJAH
The Lord [Jehovah] is my Lord.
(1) Fourth son of David (2 Sam. 3: 4); usurps
the kingdom by way of a conspiracy with
Joab, Shimei and the priest Abiathar which the
prophet Nathan discloses to include the putting to death Bath-sheba and
Solomon (1 Kings 1:7-8 &
11-12), pardoned
conditionally pending Adonijah 'shewing' himself worthy,
but 'IF' there should be found wickedness in him, he would die
(1 Kings 1:52), and when evidence by his own
mouth 'shews' forth his continued conspiratal designs in seeking king
David's last arraged political 'wife', Abishag, to wed,
(1 Kings 2:17) Solomon sees through the
rouge that it is unto obtaining the kingdom
(1 Kings 2:22)
and pronouces that Adonijah by his own mouth he has spoken death unto himself
(1 Kings 2:23) for so 'shewing' forth his
wickedness rather than being found worthy, and thus Adonijah is afterwards
slain (1 Kgs. 1: 5-53;
1 Kgs. 2: 13-28;
1 Chr. 3: 2).
